Scarpia

After discussion of Blomstedt/San Francisco recordings got this one off the shelves and listened for the first time.

Don Juan is a wonderful recorded performance.  I think I have to get all of the Blomstedt/San Francisco recordings (I have most already).

Beethoven, LV - Cello Works - finishing up my 2nd listening to these newly acquired CDs; 3 discs w/ fortepiano - now on the extremely inexpensive Apex label (i.e. Warner Classics) - worth pursuing if interested in period performances of these compositions:

Well, yes, that high soprano part seems to imply the cause of death was strangulation.   >:D
haha!!

The performance of "The Great Gate of Kiev" by Karajan and the BPO was quite impressive in this 1966 recording.

Now playing CD1 from this set, a recent arrival for a first listen.  This is a very little known Handel opera ...

On my list of yet-to-but Handel operas. I just Bought Arianna in Creta on MDG. Please tell if you like it.

It has been quite delightful - virtuosic orchestral playing, nice overture and awesome singing so far ...

Francesco Maria Veracini. 6 Sonate a Flauto solo e Basso. Arcadia.
Christoph Ehrsam, Flauto dolce in F, (Shige Hirao 1984)
Attillio Cremonesi, Cembalo in Stile Italiano, Edwin Meyer.
Eunice Brandao, Viola da Gamba, Guy Derat (1985) Copy of Michael Colichon 1693.

Veracini was a very cultured man, that had many sensible things to say, and was considered a genius in his time, which he is, if you listen to the works on this CD. It may come over as easy listening music, but make no mistake, it is very well crafted. Easy on the ear does not mean, compositions without value. It takes quite a effort to bring this off well, and I am happy to say, that that requirement is met full 100%, thats why I mentioned the instruments used, for they play a important role in the sound. These musicians who recorded this in 1991 where on the top of their art, for I seldom heard such grace and harmony in the music of Veracini. All of them make this CD a feast to listen to. I played it many times, and it will go in my collection, and I full well know I will probably never play it again in my lifetime. It makes me incredibly sad! But so many other recordings are waiting to be played, that I have hardly time to immerse myself into overwhelming sadness, but the sting was felt nevertheless.

Veracini, Francesco (1690-1750) - Flute Chamber Works - well described by Harry above; just arrived (but probably added to my wish list based on the above comments) - have to agree completely; period instruments, well played & recorded -  :)

Ozi, Etienne (1754-1813) - Bassoon Sonatas w/ Danny  Bond on an instrument by Pieter De Koningh after Prudent, Paris ca. 1765 & Richte van der Meer on a violoncello, Jaques, Paris 1719 - never heard of this Parisian virtuoso bassoon player and composer - coming up next and expect to enjoy.  :D

Et in Arcadia Ego.

Harry & Dave: Thanks for the suggestion. Those flute sonatas look enticing.

Now listening to this fine (performance & music) 2-CD set (the first six sonatas were licensed from Tactus):

That looks great.
I have his Nielsen cycle which is imo the best there is.

Just listened to the Alpine on the same disc.

Just as good as Don Juan, fabulous!  There are a few parts where the nature-painting is a bit over the top, but there are wonderful depictions of the feelings of the climber in this work which are, in my opinion, as good as any music written.

That's a very good recording right there, John. The sonics are crystal clear and Gatti handles Berg's textures beautifully.

The orchestration is perfect. It's possibly as creepy as the original piano version. Makes me want to play Resident Evil.  8)
