Looks like this one will remain half a CD to me until I get too curious :)

Didn't know you were a fan of that recording, Bruce. :)

QuoteMENSCH: Oh, don't hesitate! It's my absolute top recommendation for the Alpensinfonie, way ahead of the rest of the competition, be it Haitink/LSO, Solti/BRSO, Kempe/Dresden or whatever else you like. It's an absolutely stupendous performance, incredibly well characterized and dramatically structured. Of course, the Dresdeners know this repertoire like the back of their collective hand. Plus it's recorded in absolutely resplendent sound. I heard that recording on the radio first and was completely blown away. That's when I started collecting Luisi's Strauss. The Alpensinfonie also comes with a fine rendition of the four last songs by Harteros.

Good God!
I'll have to get it straight away!   :o   :D  (I like reading reviews which get me slabbering for more!)

Oh yes, I have that one and his Beethoven 5 and 7--love all of them. That Brahms 4 was the first one I bought (IIRC) after growing up with the Bruno Walter recording in my ears.

Righty ho.  Here it is.  AND I have played it (now on the Lieder).
Your review is spot on Mensch.  I can hear instruments in the background which are normally harder or drowned out altogether.  Not with this.  It is a very, very well considered work, brilliantly played, and schematically perfect.  Worth it, and definitely the leading contender for the 'reference' recording.

Can't get Amazon link working.   :(

Wow! That was quick! Did you get the download?

Purchased and listened to today :

Against the communis opinio doctorum  :D, I am not generally a fan of Andreas Staier... too much ego in his recordings for my usual taste. But here the thing works out because Staier gets to maintain the structure without to neglect the infinity of details and small effects of this excellent and complex music.

BTW, for some inexplicable reason this Elatus re-release doesn't indicate the instrument used by Staier; but the information can be found in the original release:

Listening to Symphony No. 7. This is my favorite recording of this symphony. It blows the performance on CPO out of the water.

Yes.  Technology is wonderful.  Your justified review set me off and there was no stopping me, this being one of my favourite pieces of music.  All of my Classical purchases bar none are downloads these days.  This recording was everything you said it was.   :D

In fact, here is what you said it was, and I endorse it totally!

Well, I'm glad you enjoy it! I like tangible CDs and distrust harddrives which can fail, so I still buy CDs. I get things from amazon marketplace sellers if it's unavailable from amazon proper or if the price isn't right. My wife is an academic and buys a lot of books, so we have amazon prime and I get two day shipping for free. BTW, the amazon links apparently don't work with the ASINs for the MP3s. You have to use the ASIN for the CD. Thus:

Really impressive music. Given when it was written it is something of a throw-back to the baroque, and all the more delightful for that reason, but it's fully in the classical manner with two or three movements and rondo finales. It would be nice to find more solo/duo violin music from this period - it was very common in the baroque and modern periods, but waned somewhat in between. The performances are very fine, and the recording is almost ideal - perhaps very slightly too close/detailed, but this is compensated for by a balanced and rounded sound to the instruments. This is my second listen and won't be my last :)

Edit: hehe an amateur violinist housemate just asked what was playing - I wonder if she's interested in playing them if the scores are available? It's infectious music - just the right mixture of liveliness, elegance and sostenuto.

It's been awhile since I heard this recording. All Martinu fans should own this recording. It's just that essential.

Mensch & John - thanks for the comments on the Strauss above left - put it in my cart at the Amazon Marketplace (have not bought this composer in a long while - just filling in other areas, I guess) -  :D

Beethoven, LV - Piano Concertos w/ Paul Lewis - giving this set another listen - enjoying -  :)

Luisi's AlpenS. is good and Harteros very lovely in the 4lastSongs... but I'm doing a comparative thingydingy with the Alpine... and I'd (also) suggest this one for consideration: http://ionarts.blogspot.com/2010/07/dip-your-ears-no-104.html

For Strauss' Four Last Songs, Karajan is still the man to beat in my opinion:
