If you ever get a chance, listen to Prokofiev's Ivan the Terrible.  It's a mish-mash of bits and pieces of Prokofiev's music, along with original music for ITT.  I saw a Ballet DVD of it, and thought the music was incredibly powerful and muscular!

The film is one of the best ever (seriously), and I've heard the music in the context of the film, but of course the 1940 audio recording doesn't have much in the way of clarity.

Staying with Richard Wetz, his Symphony #3 in B flat major, played by my local band, the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, Werner Andreas Albert conducting.

First run. Stunning Haydn interpretations of the detailed, refined and atmospheric kind.

Yes, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra in state of grace; one of the best renditions of these symphonies that I recall. My favourite, although Martin Haselbock and Harnoncourt are a fierce competition.  :)

Listened to Giulini's early Dvorak recordings.  A nice, Brahmsian take on the works.

About to embark on this complete set of Debussy's and Ravel's orchestral works with one of the all-time greats in this music: Jean Martinon.

It's been a year or so since I've heard recording from this exceptional set.

So far, my impression of the performance puts this set as the best St. John Passion among the ten versions I have, though the version by Veldhoven is close ...

Such a good programme - people can be rather blasé towards Liszt's orchestral music, so a grouping of works chosen with such obvious aesthetic conviction is a nice change from three randomly thrown together tone poems.

Now playing CD4 - Cello Sonatas and String Quartets from the following set for a first listen.  Performance is charming and lyrical, which really is winning over someone like myself who has never liked chamber music much ...

Have you heard Debussy's or Ravel's chamber music?

I agree, Q.
I've been meaning to give Jakob Lindberg's collection a try, but have been so satisfied with Norths' that I never have.

Inspired to listen now to Vol.3...

I'll pretend that I was aware of that... ;D It does make the general concept of that Hyperion disc quite fitting.

Stuart - for a guy that claims to own nearly (or more) that 8000 LPs & CDs, I'm dumbfounded by the statement I placed in bold above - I can't imagine that you have not heard (and own) a LOT of chamber music -  ;) ;D

For myself, I have a mixture of this music but must say that the 'chamber works' are probably my favorite for routine listening (although I do have a TON of loud orchestral pieces) - for my spouse, chamber music is her preference so a lot of the type of music that I play esp. at dinner time -  :)

:o :o :o  I wasn't aware of that either when I reached for the Liszt box earlier, compelled somehow to listen to zum Grabe. Spooky! Was I being compelled from the grave?  ;D
