Thanks for that, sometimes one wonders if one is 'getting it about right' so it's always good to hear general agreement or otherwise.  I have not heard G Simons' take on "Queen of Sheba", and I am well up for being blown out of here....so I will first spotify it, then blow myself out to Amazon to buy it if impressed, which I see no reason why I shouldn't be.

Thread Duty:

Milhaud cradles and does not punch you with his music.  Very beautiful, easy stuff, complexed only by fabulously intricate patterns.

John, you can find Simon's performance of Queen of Sheba on YouTube. That is, if you haven't already checked it out.

By the way, it's awesome to see you give some of Milhaud's music a spin. He's an uneven composer, but when his music is happening, it is really a joyous spectacle to behold. 8)

SILVESTRE REVUELTAS

Night Of The Mayas (Orchestral Music of Revueltas)

String Quartets 1 - 4
Cuarteto LatinAmericano

good stuff

See my above comment to Karl, but only substitute Revueltas for Chavez. 8) I better be careful to not damage this table...

La noche de los mayas is one of Revueltas's best scores IMHO. I love the way he lets the percussion section rip in this work. Really cool music from one of my favorite composers.

This set again:

Faust's tone is expressive, tender and fragile, while Melnikov's piano is her gentle wrap.

Hi Antoine - I've read some excellent reviews on the set that has appeared to gone to the top of your list for these works on 'modern' instruments - just curious if you've had a chance to hear the recording inserted above (right) w/ Cerovsek & Jumppanen?  Quite good reviews when I purchased the set last year, but Faust & Melnikov does interest me -  ;) ;D   Dave

A little late night vodka...

That vodka goes down smooth. :) This is a gem of recording here. The Semyon Kokto Suite is gorgeous.

The idea of listening to an operetta yesterday was implanted in my mind, so I figured I would listen to one from a relatively new box that was well promoted about a year ago on these boards. It is now $31 at Amazon for 13 discs. If the interest is there, I will add my voice to those who recommended it before me. And since Harry was one of those people to recommend it AND it was his Bday yesterday AND because we should really all be celebrating a birthday week (not just a day), I thought a new one from that box would be just the thing. Land of Smiles sets just the tone too. I can tell from the start I am going to love this...

I start a little less wild and begin my day slowly with this excellent disc, which I bought for a song at JPC, and never regretted it. And the cover well, uhmmmm is very nice to look at...no? A babe!
