My favorite Symphonie Fantastique! Sir Colin Davis is the best Berlioz conductor on the planet. Have you heard his recording of the Requiem? Man, what a performance!

I think I have the recording on LP but have not listened to it in ages.  This twofer by Norrington, which I bought a few months ago, has been well received ...

I try to avoid Norrington like the plague. Have you heard Munch's performance. This is another favorite besides the Davis/LSO on Philips.

The Munch's Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique was among the first few SACD's I bought.  Great SQ IMO ...

I have this newer version by Colin Davis as well but think the older version with the RCO, which I am listening to now may be better ...

Yes, I actually own three performances of Symphonie Fantastique with Davis: RCO, VPO, and LSO Live. I'm sure he's done more, but I think three, with the same conductor, is enough. :P

I take it you like Beethoven then? ;) :D I only own around 6 or 7. Probably too many, especially for somebody who doesn't care much for Beethoven. :)

If only all obscure music could get such wonderful performances and recording jobs :)

That's a outright winner for me Sarah.

BORODIN:  Symphony No 2                             / Orchestra of the Radio Stuttgart, Carlos Kleiber

Intense, powerful and dynamic, with an amazing coherency, this version live (1972) is a tribute to the art of Carlos Kleiber, perhaps the last of the genial conductors. It is also the best version of this Symphony.

His father, Erich Kleiber with a mediocre orchestra (the NBC Orchestra) left a version with a great energy but deprived from the extraordinary architectonic sense of Carlos. However, the Andante is a sublime moment of poetry.

The versions of Kletzki and Svetlanov (this one too emphatic) offer less interest.
