That is easily the most bizarre first symphony I've ever heard. (4 out of 5)

IMO Alessandrini expresses the originality and spirit of the music more convincing than Weimann, whom I find a bit ordinary. This the reason why I have not acquired Weimann´s organ CD.

No doubt, Alessandrini is totally exuberant and a hard competition. But I have not heard Weimann playing the harpsichord yet. I have just heard the 2-CD set played on organ and I enjoyed very much what I listened to. Probably the instrument could be better, but Weimann's playing is full of imagination and rhythmical drive.

I have long had a soft spot for it, to the extent that I didn't realise it was considered a "problem piece" until I read about that opinion on this forum. Personally, it grabs me from the outset, and the word-setting is so ideal that I cannot become tired of it. If it were any shorter, the work wouldn't fit the ambitions of the text and concept, so I don't consider it overly-long or padded as it has sometimes been accused of.

"Sea Symphony" was the piece that first grabbed my interest in RVW, it will always be one of my favorites. I think it's time to create a thread dedicated to this unproblematic masterpiece  ;D

Thread duty...

Currently listening to  From the House of the Dead from this integral set:

For all Janacek fans wanting an economical boxset of Janacek's operas with excellent performances I wholeheartedly recommend the above.

You will have to get the librettos separately as they are NOT included!

Gubaidulina.  Ms Mutter carries it off as if born to it. Perhaps she was... :o

Well David, she was born to it, technically.  This piece was composed by Gubaidulina specifically for and dedicated to Anne-Sophie Mutter.

Listening to Three Orchestral Pieces. Absolute madness! I'm loving every minute of it! :D Abbado and the VPO perform this music astoundingly well. Those burnished, warm VPO strings are just what Berg's music needs.

John, I love the way you describe this piece! :) Probably my favourite SVS piece, and one of my favourite pieces of the 20th century!

Spending the early evening listening to pieces I absolutely adore but have not listened to for a while. :)

I'm glad you enjoy this work, Daniel. By chance have you heard Berg's Lulu Suite, the Violin Concerto, or Seven Early Songs. I think these are all masterpieces as well.

Yes, I know those other pieces rather well, masterpieces! Berg is by far one of my favourite 20th century composers, in fact only beaten by Ravel, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, VW and Bartok! :)

Good, Daniel. I'm glad you enjoy them. When I heard Lulu Suite for the first time, my jaw actually dropped by what I was hearing. I simply couldn't believe it.

Prompted by your comment I listened to Weimann's harpsichord disc. I agree with you, he is a lot more conservative than Alessandrini and we know the Scarlattis were not very conservative boys. I miss here those furious outbursts and sudden rhythmic changes well reflected by Weimann in the 2-CD organ set, where he seems freer. Additionally, Alessandrini is benefited by a formidable sound quality, as generally happened with the recordings produced by Michel Bernstein.

It certainly is an amazing piece! Sometimes that happens to me, my jaw actually dropped when I saw Mahler 1, 6/Prokofiev R+J/Nielsen 4 live for examples... :)
