That's one of my favorite M5s...sometimes I think my very favorite. An icy, razor sharp, first movement but with the most colossal and prolonged chorale climax in the second.

One of the perks of being retired. I have nothing else to do but listen to music 8)

Lucky you! ;) As soon as I get out of school, I am looking forward to spending a whole life in music, 24 hours of each day! :) :)

Listening to the music of my composition mentor at the RAM:

Anyone know him? I imagine some of you who are fans of Robert Simpson will. Matthew conducted many of his symphonies and was the dedicatee of one I believe. Well, I am certainly enjoying his music, which is probably as eccentric as the man himself. Great to work with! :)

My favourite remains Chailly. :)
Have a nice day, Sarge. Maybe you'll get a chance to listen to ANOTHER Mahler symphony and make me even more jealous...

Oooo  :o, wasn't aware that Dohnanyi/Cleveland did a Mahler 5th recording, might be my cup of tea, considering they recorded some of my favorite performances of Bruckner symphonies.

Yep, Chailly's one my favorites too along with Solti, Boulez, Kubelik, Stenz, Dohnányi and Neumann/Gewandhaus.

They both disappoint me in the Fifth...strange that. I generally like their Mahler.

Really? Yes, it's a little strange ;) They were wonderful Mahler conductors, in my opinion both their No.5 are definitely ravishing.

I'm shocked that Sarge doesn't swoon over Bernstein's WP 5th! (I sure do.)

I certainly agree, the Bernstein is one of the most beautiful and touching performances of Mahler No.5 I've ever listened to.
