Good morning all ya fine fellows! and one or two girls ;D

A remarkable disc, a musical rewarding disc, music that will surprise and delight you in no small measure! This is the stuff musical dreams are made of. This is a composer that can hold his ground any time with anyone, no matter how high on the celestial throne they may sit, Walther belongs next to them. Ignored and forgotten, this master of musical arts, delivers some of the most excellent tunes I heard in quite a while, and so it would please me mightily if some of you would try this too, and you will not be the worse for it, save some pennies to get it. A ZigZag recording no less. JPC has it at budget price. State of the art recording too!

Thanks for the recommendation, I liked the pre-listen bits and just ordered it.

A remarkable disc with even more remarkable music, colourfully orchestrated, in fact very well written, so much so, that it makes a huge impression on me. Scheherazade is never far away, and the music is equal to it, in my opinion. Image after image appears, the one you saw bettered by the one that comes next. Enervating and confronting at the same time. It makes easily the connection with some great orchestrator's from the past and present. This composer is something special, there is no doubt about that! Extrovert, embracing it mixes two musical worlds together into a tasteful dish.  A stunning performance and a state of the art recording, makes this disc a huge success.  Try Shur, it will blow you away. Very addictive.

The chamber music disc is very rewarding as well. The story of Truscott is a very moving human story indeed. A lesser person would have been broken or left bitter and cynical which he did not turn out to be. Instead he is a well balanced person. Good for him and good for us music lovers.

I also detect a slightly Schubertian laziness, though - leaving so much half-finished, to move onto beginning other works, which were also left half-finished...

Yes, that is true, his creativity was like champagne, a unending supply, but because he drank alone the bottles were always left half empty.

Fantastic - a great opera with an incredible final scene. Which recording will you be hearing?

Your words make me even more excited to hear it, Bruce! It is the Solti recording I shall be listening to. Bet I'll love it, so any recommendations for a second recording I could get? Have a nice evening, Bruce!

Mahler: Symphony No. 6: finale  Chailly/Concertgebouw
Continuation of a first run through of Chailly's Mahler cycle begun earlier in the week.  This afternoon will be a sort of marathon--Nos 6, 7 and 8 all in a row.

Chailly is in danger of becoming the conductor responsible for (at the moment) my preferred Beethoven and Mahler cycles both, in terms of overall consistent high quality.
