Rimsky-Korsakovs Scheherazade. Gergiev conducting the Kirov Orchestra.

A good performance, but my favorite is still Kondrashin and the Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Good performance certainly but the audio quality was absolutely hideous.

I hope you're happy.  >:(

;)

This is great to see, David! ;) Hope you enjoyed it.

I might get a chance to have my first listen to Pappano's recording of M6 later today... :D

Spending some time this afternoon continuing with this brilliant Debussy box.

All first listens... :)

La Boite a joujoux
Petite Suite

I found La Boite a joujoux to be a very interesting, amusing (I never expected to hear a quotation from Gounod's Faust in a piece of Debussy!) and in some places rather confusing piece... I did enjoy the work though. And there were many many beautiful moments.

And of course, the Petite Suite is a delight. :)

Right, off for a bit more Debussy now. :)

I think the Pappano is a pretty good recording, but not very special.....

Ah, I see... all I have heard of it so far are the hammer blows, which were some of the most amazing I have heard, and the Alma theme, which was rather lovely. So I do have a high hope of liking the recording, even if I can anticipate that it won't compare with Solti for me!

Excellent, Daniel!

Glad you are pleased, Karlo! :) Had time to listen to some more so:

[asin]B000BL99UK[/asin]
Danse sacree et danse profane
Premiere Rapsodie
Rapsodie pour orchestre et saxophone

Beautiful music.

The Saxophone Rapsodie is absolutely brilliant, I love it. We (Watford Youth Orchestra) played it in our concerto concert last Friday which was great fun, I really enjoyed it. And our saxophone soloist was amazing.

This was the first time I had heard the danses, I absolutely adore them. Beautiful, charming music!
So, I'm nearly there now, Karlo! Just Khamma, the Fantasie for Piano and Orchestra, and then a few other smaller pieces to go! Have loved it all!

A unknown composer to me but what a fine music he wrote, and what a shame I missed him in the avalanche of recording from other composers. But nothing lost, since Alpha was so friendly to allow a little sale of some of its titles, and this was one of them. Giovanni Stefano Carbonelli (1690-1772), "Sonates pour Violin & basse continue. They give pleasure from beginning to end, and it will be a lasting relationship for me. The depth and creativity lying within these works is amazing, and what if they are so well performed and recorded as the present recording, well, then you have a winner on all sides. For me it is one of my 2012 highlights already. A yummy dish!

Helene Schmitt, Violin.
Gaetano Nasillo, Violoncello.
Karl-Ernst Schroder, Baroque Guitar.
Andrea Marchiol, Harpsichord/Organ.

Your going on about Soltis Mahler makes me want to re-appraise the whole thing.  Poor Soliti has taken fourth seat in my appraisals of Mahler, but if he's always on top of your list (in particular), there is surely something I have not tuned into with him.  I'll get back to you on it over time...
Meanwhile my apologies to GMG for not being on so much or at all recently, due to a family situation which is later today going to be resolved by having a big time family pow wow.  Be posting as normal soon.

It certainly was, Karlo! And in our next concert, we will be doing RK Scheherezade!!! Rehearsals start in a few weeks. I am very excited!

Was it you that had Inbal as your favourite, John? Or is my memory playing tricks on me again? Thanks, I'll be interested to know what you think.

Sorry to hear that, hope it all gets better soon! :)

A great disc, indeed. But that's hardly surprising with Shaham & Boulez performing some of the best Bartók.

The hammer blows....... ;D
I may agree about the Alma Theme, which is romantic and passionate, but the rythm kept in the movement doesn't fully work for the first melody as well, it's a little slow and it makes the theme lack some intensity; the other movements are very brilliant though. Pappano's recording is worth listening, enjoy it when you'll hear it.
Yes, it compares neither with Solti nor with Bernstein, and neither with Karajan for me!

Ah, I see. I certainly agree with you about wanting a more fast tempo in the first subject of the 1st movement. This is also what puts me off Barbirolli's performance... which I haven't listened to in a very long time...

hmmm... the Karajan recording... that's an interesting one! And another recording I haven't listened to for quite a long time... I remember it being quite brilliant though, although not great enough to compare with my favourites. :)
