Good morning everyone!

Before I start getting ready to get to class:

Before:

R. Strauss
Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme,
Divertimento op.86
Orpheus CO
DG

Time to really get that shape-shifting "Divertimento" a.k.a. "Schlagobers" a.k.a. "Dance Suite", a.k.a. Idontknowwhat nailed down. This is one among several recordings meant to do that for me.
Be even better if the first couple of tracks didn't skip and fuzz. Unfortunately bothersome enough to send it back.

Now:

J.S. Bach
Goldberg Variations
F.Bonizzoni
Glossa Platinum

High praise from some quarters here - and available at a good price used/like new on Amazon. So far so interesting.

Bax 2 again. This time Thomson and the LPO

Earlier:

G. Mahler
Symphony No.3
M.Stenz / Gürzenich Orchestra / M.Schuster
Oehms SACD

Oehms/Stenz Mahler cycle continues... on its way to challenge -- and perhaps trump -- the other extant SACD Mahler cycles. It started out with a superb Fifth, and has since continued on a very high, if uneventful level. Bit like Zinman, in that regard. Schuster is a wild beast of a singer -- a controversial (but riveting, I find) Lady Macbeth! Now what to expect of her in Mahler?! She's already done a wonderful Urlicht in the M2 of this cycle.
Ed.: Very fine performance; good vocal contributions. Maybe a touch uneventfull, but remarkably even and without too much sizzle being lost in the difficult last movements.

now:

R. Schumann
Symphonies 1 & 3
H.Vonk, K.Tennstedt / Cologne RSO, Berlin Ph
EMI Red Line

Since Tennstedt's Schumann Fourth was my favorite (among the final contenders) in a recent GMG-instigated blind listening test, I wanted both his Schumann-Berlin recordings. On EMI Red Line they're coupled with Vonk's 1st and 2nd, respectively, to form a cycle. Other EMI re-issues of a cheap Schumann-Symphony cycles use all-Vonk.

This recent arrival:

A fine performance generally, though I am not sure that the tenor soloist is ideal for the music.

Me too with the Honegger Third!  The Naxos recording:

I like this one better than Plasson for sure; I have the Dutoit but I haven't heard it in a long time.

Also heard since last night:
Martinu Piano Sonata, with Emil Leichner:
[asin]B00000355P[/asin]
Pure Martinu through and through.  One of his few large-scale solo piano works, and it's a good one!

Maderna Oboe Concerto no. 1, Holliger and Bertini:

Who knew an oboe could do that?

Bruckner Seventh, Gielen and the Southwest German Radio Symphony:

Beautifully played, but rather underpowered for me.  For example - the huge climax in the Adagio (perhaps my favorite Bruckner movement of all) doesn't quite register with the power that it should.
So much great music, so little time...

It's one of the best 20th century symphonies I've heard, quite as good as anything RVW produced.  An orchestra that hasn't performed this work should be heartily ashamed of themselves.  I'd say it was a sort of Prokofievan work, but with enough differences to make it not merely a Prokofievan epigone.

Ahh, I'm glad you found something you really like :) That symphony is Bush in communistic firebrand mode, I have gained the impression from somewhere or other - although the lack of notes in the box make it tricky to confirm.
