Willoughby earl of Itacarius

This is really a delightful disc, well performed and recorded. I did not know the composer, but this light classical music is well conceived, and by no means slight.  I enjoyed every single work on this disc, tasteful and melodious as they are, with a elegance to it, that has to be heard to believe. Most of the works are scored for Strings and Flute, but also some other combinations.

Julian Sperry Flute.
Julian Milford, Piano.
Clare Finnimore, Viola.
Carys Lane, Soprano.

Lisztianwagner

Maurice Ravel
Le Tombeau de Couperin

Willoughby earl of Itacarius

A composer that is continuously underrated by the establishment, thought to be a genius, often said so, but neglected despite of all praise. I would not consider him equal to his famous namesake like Rostropovich wants us to believe, but he is a composer that deserves all attention, for he is in his own right a very good composer. And the works on this disc amply proves it, for they are witty works, that are written to please, with some excellent writing for all desks. There is not a instance were he is going astray, full of purpose, with a clear view on the path he wants to go. Ingenious put together the "Andersen Fairy Tales" belong to some of the best I heard so far of him, and will not disappoint. Its like a clockwork,  a precise and apt instrument, that keeps time perfectly without fail. I love what's on this disc, also given the fact that this orchestra relishes the music, in giving us what is a superlative performance. The recording is top notch too, a real winner. I have listen to it for the first time on 12-3-2010, and misplaced it. Found it back when re-arranging some things due to me moving house soon.  Lucky me, 57:00 minutes of great fun.

Four Preludes for Chamber Orchestra.
The Swineherd.
Andersen Fairy Tales.
Galoshes of Fortune.

Holmboe: String Quartet No. 1, Op. 46

Now playing Disc 1 of this set again - I will try and play this Disc a few more times this week and see if I can slowly start to make sense of this music! :)

As a break in my Vaughan-Williams-athon, I shall join you in the Holmboe First Quartet! I dig it.

Most have an attitude to these SQ, that it is a hard nut to crack, so I let ya all crack, and wait for some thoroughly well versed reviews. Until then, they stay in the list as maybe/possibly/or not! :)

My first listen to this BIS recording of no.2, my other favorite symphony from Schnittke, alongside no.8.

This Kurtag disc:

I like much of Kurtag's output, but for whatever reason I just don't seem to connect with the works here.

I must take thought, mijn vriend . . . often, when I find some music thus readily likeable, I am at a loss to know what to say for the listener with doubts.

QUICKLY, EVERYONE!

I'm road-tripping to Dallas in about 4 hours. It will be a 9 hour round trip. What should I bring to listen to in the car???

Notes:
- Last time brought 7 CDs of Haydn symphonies (Tafelmusik, Weil) and listened to all of them with a half-hour to spare. Kinda got tired of one composer all the time though  ;D
- Am willing to constantly fiddle with volume for music with high dynamic contrast, but only if I know it well enough to remember what happens next.
