Shostakovich: Violin Sonata, Op. 134

The works on this Disc are relentlessly gloomy but an interesting listen nonetheless!  ;D
This one is a good performance and I dont really mind it being a live recording so much!

The piano trio and 2nd SQ discs (both include works by Haydn, Mozart & Beethoven) from here - wonderful performances.

A disc which deserves all attention is this release from Brilliant that was put on the market quite unnoticed. That sometimes happens to outstanding releases. This is one of them. Not until I listened to some samples did I realize what beauty was there for the picking. The debut album of Le Tendre Amour, a group of excellent singers and musicians, that makes English music sound like a lot of fun, a sort of all seasons kind of experience. I urge ya all to sample it. It easily goes to my top 10 this year, although its rather crowded up there. Excellent booklet, with full texts.

Nina Akerblom, Soprano.
Sebastien Perrin, Traverso.
Adriana Alcaide, Violin.
Katy Elkin, Oboe.
Lixsania Fernandez, Viola da Gamba.
Krishnasol Jimenez, Theorba & Guitar.
Esteban Mazer Harpsichord.

The new erato

Haven't been listening so much lately; partly because of a bit of work related travel combined with tons of thing to do before summer vacation (going to Baden-Baden and Alsace); partly because of the fact that we had to put down our very dear, 16 year old border collie a few days ago has left me with little appetite for anything but the most necessary activities. Still; this now is sounding very fine and pretty colorful and interesting:

I like this. Romantic and pretty easy listening; pretty. Alfven fans should gobble this up.

Lovely.

A luxuriantly rich Fifth! (I cannot answer for The Lark, which was omitted from the complete symphonies set, though I make no doubt 'tis a lovely bird, as well.)

Good morning, Dave!

A nice program of works, well done.

:)

Marvelous, indeed.  For all that several other Stravinsky works are much more typical, I think this disc's program would a great entrée for a newbie.  I can readily see why the «Vom Himmel hoch» canonic variations engaged him.  And you might almost have said also some Bach & Gesualdo . . . there is a little fresh composing done in the Monumentum, but largely it is a matter of scoring, as with the Bach.

Bartok Piano Concerto #1, Rudolf Serkin, piano, George Szell conducting the Cleveland Orchestra (not the LA based Columbia Symphony - that was part of a shabby deal the Cleveland had to accept: recording under a different name):

Those were weird days (or, the weirdness of those days is different to our own contemporary weirdness). I've read now that in a TV show which was sponsored by Ford, the Chrysler building was airbrushed out (or whatever the '50s low-tech equivalent was) of the New York skyline.

I was digging through my collection of vinyl soundtracks this afternoon and was surprised to find John Williams Missouri Breaks (a Nicholson/Brando movie). It must be 25, 30 years since I last listened to it:
