Superb performances from Annick Massis (Angelo - her first aria  :o) and John Mark Ainsley (San Giovanni) and of course, Minkowski at his most dramatic. Only Laurent Naouri's devil is not at his vocal best.
I also have Hogwood's performance, with Emma Kirkby, and I find it complementary to Minkowski, since it has a great Lucifero in David Thomas.
I could not part with either of those two  :)

I have the Hogwood's version on both CD and LP ...

Let me know how it compares to Minkowski for you.

Shostakovich Symphony #6 B minor, Oleg Caetani conducting the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi

Sarge

A fantastic performance of the 6th. I was less impressed with the 5th as the Largo movement contained an inaudible timpani roll which, for me, takes away form the tension of that first climax. Lenny's 1979 NY Philharmonic performance is still the best Largo on record I've heard so far.

Listening to Symphony No. 4. One of the best symphonies of Sibelius' cycle IMHO. This set The Essential Sibelius is certainly an outstanding deal and I'm certainly glad I bought this instead of collecting each BIS box set which would have been quite costly.

Now playing WTC Book1 from my JS Bach collection for perhaps the second listen ...

Karl DAVYDOV   Cello Concertos 1 in b, op. 5  2 in a op. 14
3 Salon Pieces op. 30,  Adieu and Barcarolle op. 17/1,2 for cello and piano
Marina Tarasova, cello    The Davydov Symphony Orch. Konstantin Krimetz, cond
Alexander Polezhaev, piano
Heretofore unknown to me, Davidov was born west of Riga that alternated involuntarily between German and Russian rule.
After graduating from Moscow University as a mathematician he went to Leipzig to study music, so his compositions fit more into the German classical tradition than the Russian.  He moved back to Russia to be a professor at the St..Petersburg Consdervatory and as a cellist.

Bach: English Suite No. 1 In A Major, BWV 806

Now listening to Disc 1 of this great set which contains Suites Nos. 1-3. After this I will play Disc 1 of the Organ Works set (I really like this one!) and then probably listen to some non-classical music before bed.

Starting the week off with some Bach. Listening to this disc

from this set:

It has a mix of new and old. The playing is uniformly good and quite a nice intro to Bach's cantatas. I bought several more discs of cantatas this year, so will hopefully get to some of those in the coming weeks.

DEBUSSY:        String Quartet opus 10        / Budapest Quartet   (1957)

A version with too much dramatic tension. It is very intense, but I still prefer the beautiful version of the Quarteto Italiano.
