*Wow, all I can really say is WOW!  This recording has turned this into my favourite Violin Concerto, upending my two long standing favourites (***Beethoven's and Brahms).  Just thinking about it.....I wasn't even a fan of the Sibelius violin concerto until about 4 years ago.  :)

Simply amazing work, and performance.

I also love Hahn's performance in the Schoenberg concerto, and her recording of Ives' violin sonatas!

You might have at least tried to get even a wee bit excited about it.  I mean, either you like it or don't - clearly you are in two minds.  Your review makes it sound very boring and disgracefully humdrum when it is better than that.   You should try and get more excited about things.   :P :P :P   :D :D

Magda Olivero: Various arias

For someone the Chairman of EIAR (predecessor of RAI) had said after an audition "This girl had never a voice, nor musicality, nor personality. She had nothing!", she sure did well for a career (well, make that two careers, since she left music behind for many years after her marriage and then came back). I like this voice a lot!

It is a good disc for sure. Have you heard Lenny's Dvorak 9th with Israel Phil and the loooooong second movement?

At least he likes Salonen's accompaniment...

haha ;D

What a coinsidence, I was actually looking and sampling that disc on amazon just a few minutes ago! I haven't heard the performance yet though, although the samples did sound very good, I can imagine it being a great performance.

And listening to the samples of the Slavonic Dances on that same disc has led me into a very 'Slavonic Dances mood' so I am now sampling John Farrer's recording with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra which sounds very good indeed, I might have to purchase this! (It's only 90p on the Amazon MP) :D

This set is marvellous.  For many days now I have been listening to Haydn's symphonies for the first time and throughly enjoying them. Just finished the London and Paris Symphonies and those few caught in between.  Currently on CD24 Symphonies 79, 80 and 81.  This set is such a delight, great sound, wonderfull playing:

After listening to the recital CD last week, I knew I like her playing! This one (2 CDs) is wonderful as well!

Why is there no mention of her when people talk about great Canadian pianists?

Schubert's G major has been creeping up on "Death" as my favorite of the SQs, and this performance by Kuss Quartet is speeding that process up.
The Berg on this disc is also mighty fine.

A period instrument (PI) string quartet doing a nice selection of Haydn quartets from middle to late.  Definitely a valuable addition to the available recordings, and it looks as if they are embarking on a cycle since there is a "Vol. 2" out there as well.

Willoughby earl of Itacarius

He was one of the most productive and versatile composers of all times. His name was famous throughout Europe from France to Russia, and from Italy to England. He was elevated to nobility. His burial cortège was like a Royal Funeral procession. But none of this could keep Peter von Winter from quickly and completely falling into oblivion! It was certainly not the quality of the music, which is quite remarkable. This is the first time I hear anything from this composer, and it makes me want to hear more. All works on this CD are World Premières, and the fact that this CD has landed in the budget level doesn't bode well for future recordings of his work. Werther we like it or not, it seems almost certain that this waking up call will miss its mark.  Moesus is making the most he can of these works, they emit a charm and a tendency for beautiful melodies which is captivating. Its not the kind of music that blows you away, but it has a lingering quality, that keeps you listening. I consider him a worthwhile composer, and this CD will be played often. The performance is good, sound quality is hard to determine, since I play on a laptop drive and Bose speakers.

Nicolas Bacri: Pièces pour Clarinette (Florent Héau, clarinet / European Camerata / Laurent Quénelle) - Engaging works, mostly from the 1990s, by this composer born in 1961. Style might be described as Neoclassical (someone compared the Concerto da Camera to Stravinsky's Ebony Concerto), and Florent Héau and the ensemble have a light, supple sound.
