Brilliant.  Thanks Ari!

Melodic, captivating, swashbuckling magic...

I really need to get this. Ari conducted Västkustbilder here during the last season most wonderfully.

Still listening to Demidenko's Tchai & Scriabin - wonderful, wonderful playing.

It feels good to be back. I hope everyone is doing well. I couldn't come back without spotlighting my favorite recording of Shosty's 5th yet again.  8)

That's a great recording, Ilaria. Egdon Heath is reportedly Holst's favorite work of his own. I can understand why.

Thanks for the welcome back, Johnny Boy. I do like Haitink's and Barshai's Shosty quite a lot actually. It would be difficult for me to choose between them, but I think every set has it's own fair share of strengths/weaknesses. One of the most apparent weaknesses in Haitink's set was his 5th and I'm not totally convinced by his 4th or 10th either, but his 8th is still one of the finest performances of this symphony I've heard. He gives them all a run for their money. One of the aspects of Haitink's set that I enjoy is how he doesn't put too much weight on the extremes of the music and finds the right balances between the lighter, more playful side with the darker, more sombre side of Shostakovich's music. If anything, Shosty is a study in contrasts, but what he so often does is weigh heavily on one side of the spectrum to where it would seem to just flip the whole thing over. A good conductor, like I believe Haitink is, knows how to find the middle ground and separate everything with a keen ear and a decisive attitude towards the music. I think, in this regard, Haitink excels and trumps many Shostakovich interpreters. Of course, all of this is IMHO.
