First listen to this version of Dvorak's D minor Serenade for Winds, a yummy performance...or so I'm told  :)

Believe it or not it's my favourite Dvorak work. I can't resist to that opening march. It was also one of the very first works I heard in concert way back when, played by a czech ensemble that also played the Martinu Nonet.

Mine too! Alongside the Slavonic Dances and the Cello Concerto. I absolutely love this serenade, the performance I own is Myung Whun Chung's with the Northern Sinfonia of England. A really excellent performance. Would be very interested to hear this performance you have here, Sarge! :)

Yes, a great piece indeed. A very fine compliation. Have you heard Tippett's Fantasia On A Theme By Handel yet, Daniel? It's for piano and orchestra and though it doesn't get as many performances as say Double Concerto or even his Piano Concerto, it's still a fine work that has some gorgeous piano writing.

Certainly, John. I have not heard that work yet, no. I shall hopefully find the work on youtube later today and take a listen, will let you know what I think! :)

As much as I like my new Marriner-led Dvorak Serenade CD, I still prefer the amazing clarity in this version of the D minor, my first: Edo de Waart conducting the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. Listening to op.44 now. (Mrs. Rock likes the lusher sound of the Marriner disc.)

Thanks, John. No, not yet, and as you are proving, there is still quite a lot of Tippett still there for me to explore. I shall make sure to listen to the works you have recommended to me in the upcoming days. :)
