From the BBC Proms:

Messiaen: Et exspecto resurrectionem mortuorum
interval
Mahler: Symphony No.6

Leipzig Gewandhaus/Chailly
Thank you for calling our attention to this. I'm just about to fire it up. BTW, did anyone catch Rattle/BP's Sibelius 4?

No.98 is great, and so is this recording.

Now playing CD3 from the following set, a recent arrival for a first listen ...

The first selection of Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber is stupendous.  When this piece is performed by the ASMIF, which is in a different league from most orchestra, the result is very satisfying ...

Agreed wholeheartedly.  Meanwhile, in a wee misty corner of mythic Scotland, music by a Frenchman is actively blasting the sky off.

Lulu from 2001.  Ms Schafer is in fine voice, and Levine leads an extremely well executed performance.  Superb.  I think I shall have to investigate Levine's Wozzeck from 1980 in this same series.

Yes, I was there for that Prom too. Rattle's performance of Sibelius 4 was beautifully atmospheric. It was incredible to see the Berliner Philharmoniker live! :)
Enjoy, Dave - the Prom with Chailly doing Mahler 6 really was one of the greatest concerts I have ever been to and one of the best Mahler performances I have ever heard. I have posted some more comments on the Concerts thread. :)

Different cover though, same recordings.
My favourite English composer.

My pleasure. :) I listened to the concert on BBC Radio 3, it was absolutely outstanding! Such thrilling, beautiful music! ;D I would really interested in listening to the Rattle/BPO performance, will they repeat the broadcast?

Certainly, Ilaria! Unfortunately, Butterworth could only leave a very small output, as he was tragically killed so young in the First World War.... The music he did leave though is absolutely enchanting, as you say. Really beautiful! :)

I have the following recording of Buttersworth's works by William Boughton, who is now the conductor of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, which is some 40 miles from my house.
