I ended up listening to the Kempe set most of the day - really enjoying it so far!. It has a lot of stuff I havent heard before which is why I wanted to collect it. I love Karajan in Strauss too so I am hoping to do a bit of comparative listening over the few days :)

Re: Richard Strauss: Kempe is heroic; my only wish is that I'd waited a bit longer to get that EMI set among a few other items that have become indispensable to me (e.g. Sinopli's ELEKTRA), because it would have sweetened the deal on that Brilliant STRAUSS EDITION megalith.  I am still by far newbie enough to wince when I "re-purchase" performances....I know this hang-up will eventually have to give way.

Today's CHRISTMAS ORATORIO for me was a very recent discovery, with its almost hilarious quadruple-threat phalanx of legendary singing talent (and Janowitz of course has done a super-favorite Strauss FOUR LAST SONGS):

J.S. Bach: WEIHNACHTSORATORIUM (w/Janowitz, Wunderlich, Crass, C. Ludwig - dir. Karl Richter)

How is it, Que?

Nice, very nice.

But in listening to this recording from now over 20 years ago, make you also realize how much the focus on what Zelenka is about has developed and progressed.

Compared to the brilliant, dynamic, theatrical and by times exuberant Zelenka that Václav Luks (Accent, Zig Zag), Marek Štryncl (Supraphon, Studio Matous) and Adam Viktora (Nibiru) have brought us in more recent years, this older Bernius recording (I haven't heard his recent recordings on Carus) is a step back in pace, more deft and solemn. But the singing is glorious with superb contributions by Argenta et al. and the accompaniment is spirited and refined. At bargain price, definitely a worthwhile Zelenka disc.

Hey, Mad. When you start digging into the Essential box, one of the first things you should hear (if you haven't heard it before) is the rarely recorded Wood-Nymph op.15. It's fantastic.

Thanks for the recommendation, Sarge - I shall certainly made that piece one of the first I dig into! Very excited to! Merry Christmas, Sarge! :)

Thread duty: Messiah continued - just entering Part 3 now. Excellent music! :)

I was listening to it a couple of days ago. BWV 63, in particular. How many ever times he opens an aria with an oboe or violin solo, it almost never fails to move me.

Same here. Bach had a notorious soft point regarding some wind instruments, remarkably the oboe and the flute (and, earlier in his life, the recorder).  :)
