It was unshrunk (Hi Cato! :)) almost as soon as it bought; it simply wasn't played -- until now.

A few more minutes and it will be First Listen Fridays: Richard Strauss' lieder. Jessye Norman and Geoffrey Parsons. Sounds beautiful.

Wowzers! Beethoven is a big, gnarly monster. But a gnarly monster with a big ol'heart. I'm not a huge collector of Beethoven, so I'm sure I'm missing a good amount of potential "benchmark" recordings here, but Tennstedt offers, to my tastes, easily the best No.9 I've heard. He exceeds my limit for overly dramatic interpretation choices, but gets away with it, and then some. Plus a little extra from the horns and timpani always bode well with me. And what about that dream team of soloists? Yeah. This live performance will sit comfortably among others as proof that a live recording can out-excite a studio one any day of the week. Call me an over-exaggerator, but my mind is blown on this one.

I'll never shy away from admitting that Beethoven's 9th deserves every bit of popularity and every accolade it receives. It may not ever grace my personal favorites list, but listening to this recording I am once again reminded of why it sits upon so many others.

Tallis - Salve Intemerata

Of the drawback of spending years with one single recording that you absolutely love (Summerly/Oxford Camerata) and that gets imprinted in your mind as just "perfect".

The recording above rushes the work at 15'53 (whereas Summerly's is clocking at 23'09), leaving me somewhat disappointed at this first listen  :-\

or is the slower pace the actual exception ?
