I cannot say Delius swept me off my feet on first listen, but I have a general idea and I will give his music another chance in the future.

On Spotify:

Joseph Haydn--Symphony No.43 in E-Flat Major {"Mercury"}, Symphony No.44 in E Minor {"Mourning"} and Symphony No.45 in F-Sharp Minor {"Farewell"}. All three works feature the Stefan Sanderling led Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. First listen ever to these symphonies; can't really say that any of them really "grabbed" me in any way. Some people have commented on other forums that much of Mozart's or Vivaldi's music sounds similar  to their ears. For me, this comment/observation would seem at least as applicable--if not more so--to this composer, at least based on these three symphonies. Or perhaps I am missing something here?

To be sure, I'd recommend to try this one, if it's available on Spotify:

[asin]B00004SA85[/asin]

Symphonies Nos. 43 (CD4); 44 (CD5) & 46 (CD6)

Then I'd recommend Symphonies 6, 7 & 8, performed by the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra (Freiburger Barockorchester) or conducted by Harnoncourt or Haselbock or Kuijken.

I mean: try period instruments. It's a totally different Haydn experience, compared with the same composer performed by a modern orchestra and playing modern instruments. Word.

Schubert - Complete String Quartets
String Quartets 2
Auryn Quartett
CPO, 3 CDs

CD4:
Quartet No. 3 D. 36
Quartet No. 4 D. 46
Quartet No. 9 D. 173

So far all performances included in these four discs have been excellent.

The Auryn Quartett together with the Leipziger Streichquartett are easy references in Schubert.  :)

Aye, well, I posted that near the end, and now it's Haydn.
I christen this day a Haydn day.
It will be Haydn all the way...

I heard some Sibelius by John Storgards.  It was very...robust.  :o  I liked it.  Bet that Korngold is pretty 'robust' too.   ;D
