My first exposure to Górecki was his 2nd symphony which gave me nightmares and scared my dog from my listening room. The 3rd is so completely different in mood and is simply arresting. The dog is enjoying it too. I picked up this one and Wit's Naxos release, I cannot say that I favor one over the other as they are both brilliant performances.

LISZT: Deuxième Année de Pelerinage (without the Dante Sonata) / Wilhelm Kempff (DG, 1975)

To me, the best version of this cycle, but without the Sonate. Kempff, with his magic sound, is very poetic, contemplative. Even works that always seemed boring to me, like Spozalicio, seem transfigured by this interpretation, very pure, lyrical.

In the Petrarch Sonnet 104, Kempff seems preferable to the legendary version of Lipatti.

Alfred Hill. (1869-1960)

String Quartets Volume I.

No. 1 in B flat major, "Maori".
No 2 in G minor, "A Maori Legend in four movements".
No. 3 in A minor, "The Carnival".

Dominion Quartet.

The musical language of Hill's quartets is reminiscent of Dvorak and Tchaikovsky with easily remembered melodies crafted within the harmonic texture of the romantic era, rhythmic vitality in the outer movements and consistently beautiful slow movements of much charm. The blend of antipodean nationalism with the traditional forms and musical language of the late nineteenth century Europe brings a uniqueness and freshness that has appeal on a first hearing, yet reveals a wealth of underlying ideas on further acquaintance.
The recording and performance is exemplary.

Haffner

Spohr is almost always delightful music, and this twofar is no exeption.
The performance and recording is very good.
