Second. But I know the work quite well. Didn't listen to it for some time, though.
had two versions on LP - an "old fashioned" one with Joan Sutherland (!)- quite lovely , and on Argo ,with Jill Gomez.

This one gets always good reviews:

Norma Burowes / Gardiner

Yes that's the one, only mine is a cheap reissue. ;D

CD 11:
Sonatas nos. 33, 35, 58, 32 & 53
Played on a fortepiano with Viennese action, made by Louis Dulcken, Munich 1793.

Q

Que, that is my favourite disk in the box 0:). I really like no. 33 and no. 53 is the only Haydn piece I ever played (many, many moons ago). I think I'll put that on next after I've finished this:

I'm not familiar with Monteverdi at all but since seeing L'Orfeo, I'm really starting to dig his work.

Easy on the ear:
Mendelssohn: Capriccio Brillante op. 22. Rena Kyriakou, piano/Westphalian SO/Hubert Reizhert.

On a 10" from "The great Musicians"-series.
I love music. Sadly, I'm an audiophile too.

Schubert.

String Quintet in C major, D 956, opus Post 163.

Rondo in A major, for Violin and String Quintet D 438.

Stradivarius Instruments from the Smithsonian Institution.

L' Archibudelli

Disc ten from this box, and still strong in expression and a constant delight.
Well known works, in the light of authenticity.
The recording from 1991 is exemplary.

I keep seconding! :)

IMO the best L' Archibudelli recording ever - and a true eye opener on this masterpiece.
Terrific and intense stuff!

My friend, did you notice how many mistakes they made with the info on the sleeves, apart from the fact that there was no booklet, timings too are missing, and that they mixed up the order of pieces. A messy job from Sony I must say. Not seen it that bad in years.

I don't have the box but have (almost) everything in it seperately. :-\
They supposedly also made also a mistake in the info about the Bach suites (indicated 1st rec. instead of the 2nd, or the other way around)?

For the Bach suites they used the cover art for the second recording, but the text and music is the first.

Stravinsky: Violin concerto. Bress/Prague SO/Rohan. A very good Supraphon-pessing this, from '68. The music is a first-hear. Interesting, grabs my attention.
I love music. Sadly, I'm an audiophile too.

I would rather know the violinist and the conductor - is it Heifetz & Beecham?

Q

Jane Glover conducting and Leland Chen (solo)

Not bad at all!

True, with this error it begins, and that goes on untill the last disc.
Maybe a drunken editor?

Happy 41! Sorry about my delay, Haffner. I trust you were celebrated properly?

Thanks so much, V.! I received 14 gifts total (13 from my girl, 1 from my parents). And to top it all off, dark chocolate Duncan Hines brownies with peanut butter.

Mega- JA!

Now:

This is a Mendelssohn morning, yet I'm playing his Midsummer Night's Dream (Glover and Royal Philharmonic)

I cannot stop playing this cd. Since I have it, and that is about three months, I have played it at least 40 times, if not more. :)

Good morning.

I got a Monteverdi cd that came in yesterday, Bill it will be my first exposure to the composer! :D  btw I checked out that Chandler novel you rec'd me.

Vivaldi.

Concertos for Strings.

Anner Bijlsma, Cello.
Tafelmusik/ Jeanne Lamon.

The last in the box. Played all 11 cd's in a short time. They gave me so much pleasure, that I could not help my self, playing them in this fast pace. I am a HIP person, always was, but these performers were not high on my list, why I do not know, for judging by what I hear, they are extremely good. Vera Beths was in my ears a mediocre performer, but that is nonsense for in the L' Archibudelli she plays a mean first fiddle, and I learned to appreciate her. Tafelmusik under Lamon, well that did not ring a bell either. This box changed all that in a positive sense, so I will be on the lookout for more recordings that were not in the box, and Que will help me with that I am sure. :)
This Vivaldi disc is a jewel, and so to the ideal sound in which I like to hear this music. Bijlsma has a perfect pace in this, and his tone is velvety sweet, and clean in his bowing.
The recording from 1992 is perfect, as all other 10 cd's were also.
Still a bargain, still 19,95, I urge everyone to try.
