I just read through the score again: excellent, very meditative piece.

You might consider a version for organ, as it would make a fine choice to accompany the Mass or other rituals.

Der lächelnde Schatten

I wish some enterprising ballet company would take up White Nights. Now, that would be a ballet to see in concert. What do you think @Karl Henning? Has there been any nibbles about a possible staging of this work or, at the very least, a concert suite arrangement from a local orchestra?

Quote from: Karl Henning on March 19, 2025, 09:03:20 PMI may not quite have wasted a whole hour, but it feels it. They changed Clipchamp and now it's a frustration generator.
The video I was trying to create for Op. 112a was useless and thus annoyance yesternight was bitter. Ten-ish years ago I bought Adobe Premiere Elements, thinking it would be the Grand Solution, but apart from two brief periods of functionality (my first task today was to try once again) that has been useless (which is why I have lately contented myself with uploads to audio.com) and therefore money down the drain. This morning I learn that Microsoft has reinstated Movie Maker, so at last success.

The conductor upon whom it has made a good impression has not been able to program it yet (we were thinking of a suite of sorts.) Nothing live at present.

Quote from: Karl Henning on March 19, 2025, 06:32:15 PMWell, he has made me welcome to send as much as I wish, so I'm sending:
The first movement of the First Symphony.
The Third Symphony for strings
Misapprehension for 15 strings
Ear Buds
For You, Fuchsia.

We shall see.
Now that I've managed to hoist the Op.112a up onto YouTube at last, my materials are now sent. we shall see. If the conversation should have legs, I shall try to inject White Nights into the conceptual mix.

Oh, that's fantastic, Karl. I hope it gets a performance soon and, better yet, gets recorded in the process.

By the way, @Karl Henning I was looking over your opus list via your website and I'm truly awestruck by all of the works you have composed. I've spoken with a few composers over the years, but you're certainly the most prolific of them all.

And not just prolific, but the broad inventiveness of everything: look at the most recent score of the Fantasia on When Jesus Wept and then view e.g. the Sonata for Viola and Piano!

As a rule, (believe it or not) I'm trying to resist the impulse to make eight versions of a score, but this is so functional a suggestion, I've sent it to three organist friends.

And now, a second. This chap had actually responded first, with the caveat that he doesn't promise anything. He didn't provide an e-mail address until I persisted today.

Sunday is another Charles River Wind Ensemble concert. I'll see Matt again, and he will be pleasant. Maybe nothing will continue to happen on that front,  but I shan't sulk, because other conductors are having a look.

Not any more!   8)   ;)

I must not have listened to it via YouTube, but through a download which you had offered.

Eric wrote today: Karl, thank you so very much for thinking of me! I will definitely take a look at this when I get to church to practice today or tomorrow. In terms of dissonance, a quick superficial look seems like it shouldn't traumatize the old ladies, as this would certainly be perfect for Lent and Holy Week. That's something I wish I didn't have to think about, but I'm afraid I have to consider it in a service setting. If I were giving a recital, that would never be an issue.

One technical thing that won't work, I'm afraid: crescendi and diminuendi aren't possible (at least for me) in such an active pedal part, since I would need to use both feet for actual playing, and you've indicated many such markings. In a pedal part with longer note values, that would be doable, but not here.

Again, thank you! I'm very flattered that you thought to send me this!

Glad that you heard back from him and that was very kind of him to give you some (what sounds like) helpful criticism/input.  :)

Certainly. Call it laziness on my part: I know that organs have limitations viz. crescendi and diminuendi (colloquially, hairpins) these were artifacts from the original score, and I might easily have struck them.
