A friend who is much more into sports spectating than I (and it's been decades since I watched a sporting match) is going to the Superb Owl, partly because the Patriots are playing, partly because the venue is near where he wrnt to school, so he can visit friends. He tells me that when single tickets went on sale, they began at $7K. Which, you know, is another reason there's a small planetoid between me and interest in "professional athletics." He says he isn't paying quite that much, but there's no denying that this wee trip is costing him dearly. Hey! It's his money he's earned and how he enjoys spending it, y'know.

As I was waiting for Maria to come watch a movie, I chanced to search for this. It's given me ideas for my present sketch.

Again, I like this music very much!

Interesting video. I previously thought that wabi is a beauty of perishing/ephemeral things and sabi is a minimalist beauty with non-flamboyant colors, such as dark brown and grey. I think there is wabi-sabi in the USA culture as well. For instance, the beauty of faded jeans. Also I find the back side of Abbey Road album cover wabi-sabi for some reason.

Hey, I envy anyone who bought tickets (ahead of time) for the men's final at the *Australian Open this year.  No idea what the price range was.  At least I can watch it on t.v.  :)

*Amazed at how much they have going on there--way more than just tennis and activities for all ages.

Karl was able to send me the score of The Dance at Ruin's Edge and I became increasingly enthusiastic, as I imagined the score.

It might seem Webernian, but has a unique flavor of its own: I called the music a musical purple diamond, as that image occurred to me, while I read through the score.

The MIDI version is - for me - a distraction, as it is too often unable to follow the markings in the score: a real performance, however, does await us!

This work and The Cape of Good Nope are showing us that Karl's creativity has entered a new and exciting realm!

Some time ago, my friend Olivia Kieffer composed a set of 55 short pieces for toy piano, The Texture of Activity. I am the dedicatee of a piece titled "The Brave," whereof our mutual friend Carson Cooman just uploaded a performance:

Title: The Karl Henning Ensemble performs "Charms and Memorials", a concert of new music, Friday, Feb 13th in Woburn

Event Details:
when: Fri, Feb 13, 2026 at 7:00 PM
where: Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 60 Forest Park Rd, Woburn, MA 01801

Description:
Please join us at Redeemer Lutheran Church at 7:00 PM, Feb 13 for a concert of new music for mixed wind quartet by Karl Henning, Kevin Scott, and Robert Gross. This concert is free and open to the public, with reception to follow.

Musical works by Karl Henning include Lamentatio per sorore sua (in memory of Kim Lillian), Amorphous and Forward Looking, Peace! The Charm's Wound Up (inspired by the three weird sisters in Shakespeare's Macbeth), Moose on the Loose (a nod to the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show), and Nostalgia Ain't What it Used to Be.  Also included in the program are Kevin Scott's Min'khah: In Remembrance Shoshanna C. Winson, and Robert Gross' Four's the Charm (a piece composed around musical fourths). Most of the pieces are heavily jazz influenced, and range from solemn and complex to the lighthearted and energetic. This concert is a reprise of the Henning Ensemble's performance at King's Chapel, Boston, on October 14, 2025.

We appear to be expecting 3-5" of new snow and cold temperatures tomorrow, so we nixed tomorrow's rehearsal, choosing instead to work later today. Excellent rehearsal.
