Quote from: lunar22 on August 12, 2024, 11:19:46 PMas someone relatively new to GMG, I struggle to get into the enormous blog which is Henning's Headquarters and really don't have time to read 475 pages. Perhaps a short summary for those in my position of who and where you are at might help.

Still, I finally got round to listening to the violin sonata and must say the middle movement in particular I found both fascinating and moving. Clearly it's worth investigating more of your stuff on Soundcloud, though I'm not quite sure where to start.

Karl is a working composer based in Boston. He has a YT channel where you might listen to his music which is regularly performed:

A little out of the blue (we just hadn't bumped into one another for a while, my friend Todd Brunel rang. I'm very touched by how enthusiastic he is about my composing. Going to try to put our heads together to see what we might do collaboratively.

I've found someone who wished to underwrite the entry fees, so I'm buying the lottery tickets.

I've also applied (for at least the second time) to a Maine-based call, with For You, Fuchsia and Sun Dance.

I've found another call for orchestral scores. Part of me wants to get For You, Fuchsia out as often as possible, especially as a chamber orchestra piece which is relatively easy to put together. However, this other call specifically states Symphony Orchestra, so I should submit something with a fuller wind complement. I have until August's end, so I'll probably find a suitable number from White Nights. I'm tempted to submit the Overture, except it has a passage of quirky metrical changes, and my sense is that this might be too much of a stretch for this orchestra. So instead, I'll settle on a number with a more thoroughly straightforward metrical profile.

(The quirky meter section begins around the 6:20 mark.)

Hot damn! Revisiting the Overture reminds me how proud I am of it, and how much I love it. Profuse apologies if this comes across as patting myself on the back!

You know, I'm unsure.... I just wanted to check: yes, it was a student work of Maria's.

For those who do not know, White Nights is a short story by Dostoyevsky, from which Karl has fashioned a ballet.

A Russian ballet company somewhere, one would think, should be interested in such a wonderful work!

And unlike the more celebrated novels, White Nights is "rom-com Dostoyevsky."
