Quote from: Karl Henning on January 01, 2025, 03:43:51 PMMy friend Peter told me of a Boston group of bass clarinets, Improbable Beasts. I have reached out to them.
This is the group. Its leader is a chap named Jonathan Russell. On one hand, I'm waiting for Jonathan to reply to my e-mail msg, on t'other, my friend Todd Brunel, who has played in the group, will try to hook us up.

Quote from: Kalevala on January 02, 2025, 10:26:51 AMPolitely worded and constructive criticism CAN be very helpful though.  The level of honesty and bluntness can vary in part in terms of reception due to how well you know and/or esteem the reviewer/person/relationship me thinks. Just some thoughts....

The chap I'm corresponding with is of the name Bill Clay, so when I was inquiring about the concert's venue, this happened:

KH: Very good, Bill. I'll look forward to hearing from you again. (Obligatory irrelevant question: have you seen the movie Die Hard?)

WC: I laughed out loud when I read this—yes.  I get this exact question on a semi-routine basis and it's always amusing. :-D

I have been meaning to ask: Your tour of the Haydn symphonies has been intriguing.

Are you following with scores?  And do you think you might compose something Haydnesque, or do you find that the tour has helped you in some other way?

Or has it simply been enjoyable?   8)

I did feel lucky that he's such a good sport about his name!
Just always having a good time listening to Haydn!

Did you then offer him a cigarette?

I must admit, as much as I enjoy that movie, it's been some time since I've watched it and had forgotten the name!  :-[

In any event, fingers are crossed for you Karl and hoping that it's smooth sailing re the concert, etc.  :)  Or am I supposed to say "Break a leg"?  Pick whichever one works for you and them!

So, I've sort of drifted into participating at the Lutheran Church here in Woburn. For one thing, a trumpeter (and his bassoonist wife) with whom I had worked way back in my First Congo days are members (it is Eric's family's parish.) And even though there is no musical role open for me, I've become friends with the keyboardist, Paul Carson, and indeed with a number of parishioners. It's a welcoming place. It's a very interesting time for the church, as they have entered into an adventure of collaboration with First Lutheran in Malden (very nice folks there, too.) In short, as times have changed, each parish has found survival a challenge, and they've been exploring a merger. I feel positive that they (we?) will find a way. I can't help feeling that this is a possibility which the Methodist parish in Danvers ought to have pursued, but who knows? Maybe the Methodist polity and/or personal feelings of the congregation were themselves obstacles to envisioning such a solution.

Eastern Orthodox Christmas will be celebrated tomorrow, and this morning I again thought of Karl's Nuhro, a hymn from the Syrian Orthodox Church.

Quote from: Karl Henning on January 06, 2025, 10:24:30 AMAnother piece I'm revisiting this week:

A most evocative creation: for those who do not know or remember, the soprano, who was first approached to sing the piece, could psychologically handle neither the text nor the music, and wrote (what I might politely call) an "edgy" refusal to pull out of the performance just a few weeks before it was scheduled.   :o

Fortunately, a psychically stronger soprano was found, who sang the piece splendidly!

Quote from: Karl Henning on September 03, 2024, 08:35:04 AMI tried writing another section of the piece, but the result was worthless. The advice from long ago resurfaces: something specific. I may or may not have something of a bead on it now.
A musical idea crossed my mind today which may belong to this piece. We shall see if (to borrow a phrase from Olivia in Twelfth Night) for want of other idleness, this proves to revive this project.

Separately, a conductor friend is looking over For You, Fuchsia.
