Fact is, I've managed to go all this way in Life's Journey without watching any. Which is mildly surprising, since my late Mum was a great Elvis fan. I have watched a most diverting New Twilight Zone episode, "The Once and Future King," though, which I can recommend. I wonder if @Cato has seen that, yet?...

Unwieldy long title and in Latin. Why? Overheated brain between the 90+° day yesterday and an evening concert by a covers band who sought to make up in amplification what they lacked in technique, and my insistent determination on returning home to compose the first duet before calling it a night?

A poor decision, yes, but easily remedied.

The phrase in question is from St. Jerome's translation of one of the Psalms, specifically Psalm XCI: qui habitat in abscondito Excelsi in umbraculo Domini commorabitur

i.e. "He who dwells in a hidden place of The Highest One will be sheltered in the Lord's shadow"

The word used for "shadow" ( umbraculum ) is a diminutive of umbra, shade, shadow, or ghost (in the right context).

"Umbraculum means, therefore, "a little shade" or an "umbrella."  Yes, the Romans had umbrellas, and our word comes from "umbraculum."

Both of the duets create a contemplative atmosphere, which one should expect, given the prayerful titles.  Number 1 contains a hint of Dvorak (check Bars 43 ff.) and the last page of #2 evokes a mystery.

They both leave the listener wanting more!  Five more to go!

Karl's miniatures are finely cut gems of all colors: I find myself becoming ever more enthusiastic with each addition to this set!

Note the transition in the middle of Bar 17 and the "Scotch Snap" in Bar 18, which will remind Americans of hymns from the 18th and 19th centuries.  A small thing, but it is enough to evoke that pious heritage.

I have written before that in Karl Henning we have an American Liadov in the best sense *: a master of the miniature in a much different way from Webern.

However, Karl has also produced larger scores, like his symphonies and the Dostoyevsky ballet, White Nights. 

If circumstances have caused him to master the miniature, I have no doubt that if circumstances changed, he will show himself to have already mastered larger scores as well!

* Members might recall that Liadov was (in)famously lazy with his musical gifts: When the impresario Diaghilev hired him to compose a ballet for the Firebird myth, and after many months inquired about the status of the composition (expecting it to be nearly complete), Liadov supposedly replied rather languidly: "Oh yes, it is going very well!  Just yesterday I bought some orchestra-size music paper."

Appalled, Diaghilev turned to the young Stravinsky.

Let us stipulate that Karl does NOT resemble Liadov in this sense at all!
