Quote from: Karl Henning on August 20, 2025, 05:44:54 AMI've found so much to like in Hovhaness' œuvre, that this artistic mis-step almost surprises me.

An old RCA recording of the Symphony #2 ("Mysterious Mountain") was my introduction to his music back in the mid 1960's.

Note that he got top billing over Prokofiev AND Stravinsky!!!

I became skeptical that he might just be "cranking things out" later (cf. Maestro Segerstam and his 371 (Sic!) symphonies).  Perhaps this little duet was something he cranked out with little care.

On the other hand...as Wile E. Coyote once said: "Even a genius can have an off day!"

No. 3 done.
Incidentally, Delores August, for whom I composed August Haze, reports that she loves the piece. She's a mom, so Life has interposed.
Also, my publisher wants to show the Opus 201 duets to the principal flutist of the ASO for feedback, so I said, "how about the solo piece, as well?"

Quote from: Karl Henning on July 27, 2025, 11:42:42 AMStarting to think of a piece for guitar and fixed media: Aaron's Uneasy Sleep.
I pretty much forgot all about this, but I'm now using the Lamentatio as the base track for the fixed media.

Symphony No. 2 Update (insofar as it may be an update)...
I've heard nothing from Matt, but I more or less expected not to (in the most neutral sense) unless he decided to program the Op. 148, which (to recapitulate) would essentially occupy half of a concert. There is therefore no Henning in the 2025-26 season: https://www.crwe.org/
Thus, probably after I've got Aaron's Uneasy Sleep wrapped up, I'll address myself to the Op. 200 band piece, a bite-size work which does not hog half a concert. This also gives me time to settle on a title I am completely happy with. Heck, I may simply cop a line from A Midsummer Night's Dream. There's the ticket!

Louis Vierne's Organ Symphony #3 is TIGHT!  What a great opportunity to hear it live!

The work starts at c. 1:02:00 with an introduction.

About the instrument:

The Boston Music Hall Organ, installed in 1862, was the first concert pipe organ installed in the United States. It was commissioned in 1857 and built in Germany by E.F. Walcker and Company of Ludwigsburg. It was the largest in the US at the time, containing 5,474 pipes and 84 registers.

The organ was removed from the Music Hall in 1884 to provide more performing space for the Boston Symphony. Initially put into storage, the organ was rebuilt and installed by the Methuen Organ Company in the Serlo Organ Hall in Methuen, Massachusetts, which was built to house the organ. The organ was later rebuilt again and augmented by the Aeolian-Skinner Organ Company. Today Serlo Organ Hall is known as the Methuen Memorial Music Hall and concerts are regularly presented on the organ, still considered one of the leading instruments in the US.

Long ago, I tried to build a relationship with music at the Church of the Advent, but never got anywhere. There has been a change of the guard, whereof I only just learnt in Methuen on Wednesday. The recitalist, Dr Mark Dwyer, is now organist and choirmaster, and before the concert Wednesday, my new friend at Redeemer, Peggy introduced me to Mark's assistant Andrew, whom Peggy has known since he was an exceptionally talented teenager. When Peggy introduced us, Andrew said he has heard of me. And in his reply to my e-mail msg he wrote, "any friend of Peggy's is a friend of mine."

Excellent news, along with the reaction to the Dandelions!

Big news: my most esteemed teacher, Jack Gallagher has completed his Third Symphony. I learnt so via a post to FB. I  need to reach out to him to inquire if a performance is in the works.
We have Henning Ensemble rehearsals tomorrow and Monday evenings for our concert a week from tomorrow. And I should ping my friend Kevin Scott to see how progress is on his piece for our October program.
