When I wrote this for Julian, he was on the faculty of Jacksonville Univ, but Florida vying with Texas to see which state is in a greater rush to embrace MAGA Whackjobbery, the University heads hollowed out its intellectual and cultural capital,  Julian left that position and sought employment elsewhere. He's now working with less experienced singers so that Retreat is not a realistic ask. It occurs to me today to try to find another opportunity for the premiere.

Quote from: Cato on August 20, 2025, 06:10:43 AMAn old RCA recording of the Symphony #2 ("Mysterious Mountain") was my introduction to his music back in the mid 1960's.

Note that he got top billing over Prokofiev AND Stravinsky!!!

I became skeptical that he might just be "cranking things out" later (cf. Maestro Segerstam and his 371 (Sic!) symphonies).  Perhaps this little duet was something he cranked out with little care.

On the other hand...as Wile E. Coyote once said: "Even a genius can have an off day!"

Falling in love all over again with the Mysterious Mountain.

Just had a touch-base phone call with Kevin, who has some heavy stuff going on which has perforce distracted from the piece. He is rethinking the piece, no longer a set of short pieces but a single elegiac movement, 5-6 minutes.

I've now finished m. 143 (of 192) so I'm downing tools for the day. Will finish handily tomorrow.

I've gotten a mildly whimsical notion to whip up a short point of imitation piece.

Hi Karl,

Please pardon my ignorance, but what part is the electronic organ (?) playing?  Sorry, but I'm trying hard to give it a fair shot.   :(

By the way, just in case our British friends here might not know, there's a bylaw in a number of states and our northern neighbors that one must own a MINIMUM of one moose-related object [preferably one bought per year] or face serious disciplinary actions--including being thrown out of ones state/country.

Warmly appreciated, indeed!

The scoring is Piccolo (doubling C Flute) Alto Flute, Bass Clarinet & Bassoon.
I think you may mean the piccolo, whose sound in this sound library is at times suggestive of a calliope
