[off-topic] Love how low that Stadler replica goes. Simply wonderful! Thanks for posting that, Brian. [/off-topic]

I love how the instrument looks like a golf club ...  ;)

You must have one heck of a ladder.

I'll watch out for a skull with super-star smile and wearing a bird's leg for a hat, then.

The rodent population has decreased of late, but I'll have an eye on that, as well. ;)

Oh. Okay, skull with some skin still left. Hat: headless baby octopus, fancily coloured, with tiny skull ornaments at the tips.

I still like to think it's a bird's leg, though. :D

We have plans to go back to Europe next Summer (the usual place). If it materializes, I 'll be 45 minutes away from Maastricht or Aachen, an hour from Cologne, 3 hours from Amsterdam  8).

Here's one that might tempt the Gurnatron out of his hideout.  8)

Sunday, November 22, 2009 4:00pm
Alice Pratt Brown Hall, Rice University
$25 entry, $15 for seniors or students
Carl Maria von Weber:  Quintet for Clarinet and Strings
Franz Joseph Haydn:  Trio for Basset-horn, Viola, and Cello
Wolfgang Mozart:  Quintet for Clarinet and Strings

Lorenzo Coppola returns with his achingly expressive period clarinets...With a rarely- heard gem: a Trio by Haydn featuring the unusual period basset-horn.
Musicians: Lorenzo Coppola, clarinet and basset-horn; Jean-Michel Fonteneau, cello; Maria Lambros, viola; Sergiu Luca, violin; Cristian Macelaru, violin.
Performed on period wind and string instruments

After dinner there is a free performance of Tchaikovsky's Polish Symphony, but it's by an orchestra of the kids who aren't good enough to be music students.  ;D
Love the period clarinet YouTube clip.  (C'mon, Karl, you know you want one!)  Great to hear the low notes that usually get chopped off! Looks like a great program.  And, wow, a Haydn trio with basset horn!  I didn't know there was one, and I look for basset horn music!  (I have to--the poor basset horn only gets to come out of the closet occasionally for the Gran Partita and a little Mendelssohn concert piece or two.) Too bad Rice is not exactly driving distance from Maryland. . .

I wonder if anyone is coming to the EXPO in Shanghai next year. If so, do make a detour to Beijing. I have tea and music at the ready. And of course, there is that wall a few miles away, and a tiny little compound with 9,999 rooms that used to be forbidden.
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

The Passion is going to be sung in Fall River in March . . . .

I think that's an hour closer to me than Boston.

And, *maybe*, a NYC trip next Spring.

If that materializes, mon cher, I shall certainly head to New York to meet with you again!  Bruce will be on board, I trow.

Yes; the dates are 19 & 21 March. Save the date.
