Bumping this because I did some comparing this morning and was surprised to find Marriner (Philips) come out on top for this work. I compared hiss with Reiner, Walter and Szell.

Was the work written for a chamber group or an orchestra?

Chamber.

TD: As a rule, my favorite Eine kleine Nachtmusik is the one I heard last ;)

The recording my dad had around the house when I was a kid was Karajan. Typical Karajan - huge massed strings, can't hear the woodwinds hardly at all.  ;)

....snip...

But somehow, I have to find out who the group on my old French HM vinyl was, too, and see if it ever made it to CD.

Cheers,

Dirk

This puzzled me way back when Dirk first posted it, but since then I have acquired what might be the disk he was talking about. It isn't on HM, but other than that it fits the criteria mentioned, and is an especially nice version, even if it isn't the same one: at least it can be had (I think ::) )

It is played as written, for string quartet and double bass. A very easy version to like!

My favorite is (K)ein Sommernachstraum....whoops...wrong thread. ;) ;D

It's a string serenade, so there should be no woodwinds to hear 8)

Which for me was a live performance on string quartet.
