I heard historic recordings of violinists who were completely new to me. It's clear that they could produce a kind of tone that isn't with us anymore. Every period has its sound, I suppose.

It's astonishing, isn't it? I was bowled over last week ... and that wasn't just because of the half a bottle of vodka I'd drunk before the lecture started.
