A really good thread I had missed before. I've always felt there wasn't enough fine Japanese music out there. Some people just have that gift — they can turn anything into gold. Or maybe silver. At least, that's how I like to think of it.

My first acquaintance with Nishimura goes way back to 1980 or 1981 - when Kecak was broadcast on the radio.
KECAK for percussion ensemble, (1979) was selected as the best work at the International Rostrum of Composers.  In 1977 he won the first prize at the Queen Elizabeth International Music Composition Competition/Brussels, with HETEROPHONY for string quartet (1975).

The kecak "ceremony" has become, I fear, a tourist spectacle...

I've some cds with music by Hosokawa, or older composers like Teruyuki Noda, Yuzo Toyama, Toshiro Mayuzumi ..
Some studied with Jolivet, Messiaen ...

This is truly wonderful stuff! Avant garde - well it sounds like it to me, but it clearly isn't. Like Machaut sounds avant garde! Beyond all the gardes.

I had some Ongaku recordings years ago. Thanks for the tip — found it on Qobuz and will listen.
