The only piece I know is Danube Waves (?), which I heard from the movie about his life. What other music has he composed that you would recommend?

I'm afraid it's a confusion. The Danube Waves is a waltz by Iosif Ivanovici. The most famous of Porumbescu's compositions is Balada. You can find them both, together with Enescu's 1st Romanian Rhapsody here. (just scroll down to #9, #11, #12 --- the other items, although not classical, are worth listening as well). Enjoy!

Wow, I did not know this, thanks Andrei, we learn every day. I saw and heard some music from Porumbescu, on a site Gaby frequents and which she posted. A lyrical piece with fine undertones of folk music.

That's Balada (The Ballade).

Well I will try to find some more Romanian music, for this piqued my interest mightily.

Forget about knowledge and listen with your ears and heart at the start. Then add the knowledge as you go along. Don't make it a challenge but a pleasant journey. You will have in music a friend for life.

Yes I can wholeheartedly second that!

Hi Gabriela, welcome!  You have come to the right place, and I hope you enjoy yourself here.  Just to throw out one Romanian composer, a lot of us like the music of Enescu, and there is a short thread on him here:

Good day... I am Gabriela, a good friend of Harry. I searched for classical music forum in yahoo and... Now I live in the Roumanian capital...

Hey, my Roumanian ain't too bad! Ha!

I will listen to some Enescu in your honor! (Violin Sonata #3)

:) right, your Romanian is pretty good, but let me say little more... I live in Constanta, on Black Sea seaside, I am a friend of Harry on Yahoo, where we listen together classical music. I am chemical engineer, I was student in Bucharest and now work as accountant.

Gabi --- may I call you that?  :) --- why don't you let us know what composers you like?

A good guess would be, because she needs to find her way yet! and I am doing my best. She likes baroque music, a little Beethoven and Enescu. ;) Her English is also in the learning process.

You should introduce her to Que.

She must be learning quickly, for her English is very good.

Welcome!

Paul Constantinescu is a name sometimes mentioned in the books. Is his music played much in Romania?

Florestan?

Well, it is my experience as a concert-goer that besides Enescu, sometimes, and a few contemporary composers, rarely, the Romanian music is largely ignored, at least in the concert-halls of Bucharest. You have to resort to recordings in order to hear it.

Paul Constantinescu would fall exactly in your league of tonal, mostly large-orchestral works composers. You should investigate it, no doubt.
