Hello, I am a retired musician but still perform for my own amusement now. I hope to join some of the discussions and look forward to getting to know a few of you .

Welcome, cal!

What instrument do you play? What composers do you like?

I am the world's worst pianist, so the less said about that, the better. But I like your Brahms and Delius, and apart from them the greats of the orchestral repertoire (Beethoven, Bruckner, Mahler and many many others) and Wagnerian opera, and Schubert Lieder (and Wolf's and Schumann's). And I could go on...

Welcome!  :) Great to have you on board.
I failed in mastering an instrument myself, and thinks it's wonderful to have members who can offer insights in what is "behind" the music. Bach, Brahms, Haydn. We have a lot to talk about. :)

Welcome cal!

I'm the official Elgar nut around here. I'm not a musician but an acoustics engineer and I can't play any instrument. I Just ordered Brahms' Piano Quartets and Trios. Bach is my second favorite composer. Delius I don't know well, unfortunately. Haydn is cool. I especially like his Piano Trios.  0:)

Enjoy the forum!

Hi, I also like the Haydn piano trios, and Elgar!! Brahms Piano Quartets are fab as are his piano trios... enjoy!
If you do want to try some Delius, there are many pieces worth listening to that are not 'On hearing the first cuckoo in Spring' and 'La Calinda' ( good though they are!) Try violin sonatas, string quartet, songs, or my favourite ( I don't quite know why) 'Florida Suite' .

Thanks for your welcome  :)

Indeed. And Idyll, the Requiem, Songs of Sunset, Songs of Farewell, Sea-Drift. Gems in profusion...

Hello Cal - a warm welcome to the GMG Forum - hope you will enjoy!  :D

I played the accordion as a teenager (many years ago, now!) - wife is the musical performer in the family (sings & plays the piano, celtic harp, recorder, mountain dulcimer, & guitar); in fact, just bought her a 'new' guitar in Memphis (at the Gibson factory) while on a short vacation there a few months ago - an Epiphone Masterbilt w/ steel strings - nice instrument for the price!  :)

Hi cal, and welcome.  Many musicians here--both retired and not--so you'll find many like-minded individuals, I'm sure.  Another Delius fan here, too.

Ah, good to find another primary violinist. Although there seems to be a love triangle here... ;D

Hi L-S, do you play in an orchestra regularly? Are you a professional violinist?

How long have you been playing ? What do you like playing most?

Do you like answering questions? ! ::) ::)

Hi cal,

Not anymore. I used to play with the Stanford Symphony Orchestra. I interned for the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra when Douglas Boyd and Joshua Bell were in their earlier years there (not performing though). Before that was the MN All-State Orch and a rehearsal with the Minnesota Orchestra under Osmo Vanska (I can't type in the umlauts sorry  :'()

14+ years.

My musical favorites vary like my taste for ice cream flavors. I do enjoy the Romantic era, so that would include Beethoven, Paganini, Sarasate, and Wieniawski. But I would have to say the most fun comes from Mozart.
I'm less of a Bach-type though my roommate a few years ago would play the Goldberg variations over and over and over on piano.

I want to take a peek at the Wolf-Ferrari concerto and Paul Dukov's Happy Birthday variations (both parts :O).
