Dear music aficionados,

I hail from Violinmasterclass and Classicalmusicguide. I've heard much about the land of GMG but have only just decided to join today. I suppose I will reveal more about myself over time by posting, so let's leave it at this brief "hello!" for now.

;D

Hm, just by accident, just wanting to see what CMG is all about, I stumble upon the following by our new poster:

I just paid a visit to GMG. Ugh, too much clutter!
CMG is the way to go  :)

I suppose that those salutations are all we will get.

Read and marvel.

And probably all he will get.

I discovered Karl there, too. The dastardly double agent!  $:)

If you dig deep enough, you might discover me, as well.  ;D
Despite some good discussions (more limited than here), there's an unpleasant, tainted aura about the place (mainly because of the unmoderated clamour of political extremism the board is permeated with).

I would note the contrary; there is substantive debate between members of differing political vantage points. What excitement is there if you don't have anyone on "the other side" to contest your POV with evidence?
Based on what I have read in the casual political threads here, the aura of superficiality and unsubstantiated claims is quite rampant. I see a lot of "I agree," "yeah what he said," or "damn straight," but less intellectual challenge or rigor when it comes to political discussions.

You will see me lounge around more in the musical areas than the small-talk threads. I look forward to hearty discussions when they arise.

The ads, buttons, and graphics here detract from discussions, in my opinion. I'll post here from time to time, but you will find me more often on CMG, that's for sure.

Thanks for the welcome. ;D

Good to see you again, L.S. And sorry about the clutter...  ;)

The CMG server just suddenly happened to go down so I guess I'm stranded here for now  ;D :'(

You'll just have to put up with the ads, graphics, buttons, superficiality, and nastiness. I do feel your pain.  :D

That's very good but also irrelevant to what I said. Both extremist political agenda and meaningful debate may exist but you know there's a problem when the extremist clamour lingers on even after debates are settled or forgotten. Sometimes there's not even a debate; just some inflammatory article everyone agrees to or - better -  chooses to ignore. Having a moderator actively contributing in the mess doesn't help, either.

Anyway, have a nice stay here; unless you're more interested in discussing politics than music, this is one of the finest places to be.

Someone mentioned that it is possible to circumvent the ads on this site. Does anyone here know how to do that?

I believe that paying a small subscription fee does the trick nicely.

I'm not 100% sure since I am a subscriber and don't see the ads, but I think if you use Firefox you can set Adblock to remove the majority of them anyway.

With the Opera browser you can do the same.

That thread's just unpleasant. Granted, we have apparently said some rather nasty things about the political atmosphere at CMG, but if that's their typical level of discourse, I'm a bit disappointed. The conclusion that they seem to draw from reading our threads is that (quoth Living Strad and Chalkperson) "the malice [on CMG] stems from GMG" and "we are much better than them." Which smacks more than a bit of hypocrisy, given how the discussion had started, and it's also awfully childish. Why does one discussion forum have to prove it's better than another? Are we still rivaling middle school cliques?

Besides, I think a discussion board that has to beg its own members, in a sticky, to stop bashing its own admin, is in no position to send conversation critics to other fora in order to criticize the level of their discourse. I am not saying we are morally superior or all good-hearted people - the M forever incident is barely over - but I do wonder why all this bickering even has to happen. Some GMGers post at CMG and vice versa; most do not. The two places have unique sets of problems. So what?

P.S. And from Living Strad, "There are some very nasty people on GMG." Of course, the pot is often correct in calling the kettle black, but...

Our admin simply got word that such bashing was occurring on CMG, which wasn't the case. Rather, the sly comments were being posted here, as noted in the thread.

I came on my own accord.

Anyhow, I've dropped this issue on the thread. Whether others decide to is contingent on their maturity level.

Thanks for the reply, sir. :) And incidentally, thank you for linking to the Violinmasterclass board - I can't play the instrument, but am finding that discussion forum a very interesting place.
