I don't think ChatGPT should be used, period.

There was also a recent legal case where a lawyer asked ChatGPT what past cases supported his position, and it named a load of cases, so he cited them. But the bot had made them all up. Friday he had a disciplinary hearing.

Correct. But the discussion about Proust shows something promising - it vigorously defended a nuanced and reasonable position.

Seems to indicate that the ChatGPT is more informed as to litterature than as to music.

I have the $20/mo GPT4 and it cannot correctly name the opening four chords of the first WTC prelude
(But is better than GPT3)

Quote from: Verena on May 14, 2023, 07:58:04 AMThanks of reminding me of Janssen. I had almost forgotten him, but now I vaguely remember liking his performances of the English Suites. Have to relisten. I agree about the harpsichord recordings. Unfortunately to this day I tend to prefer the sound of a piano to that of a harpsichord, although I find the interpretations on harpsichords often much more interesting than those by pianists. Indeed if I didn't have a subjective ,,problem" with the sound, I'd probably listen to harpsichord versions almost exclusively.

Are you a headphone or speaker listener? I find harpsichord has to have a near flawless recording to be able to listen to it on the former. Speakers I don't mind even most closely mic'd recordings. I was listening to Marcin Świątkiewicz in Goldberg Variations, interesting enough interpretation to make me want to hear the full thing but just plain unlistenable on headphones with the close mic'ing.

Thanks. Interesting. Usually I listen via speakers. Maybe I'm just too much in love with the sound of pianos, having contemplated studying it at some time in my life. But I'll continue to explore harpsichord music nevertheless, so eventually that dispreference might disappear.

^I too have seen ChatGPT give me completely out of left field stuff sometimes when I ask it about music. Makes me wonder how much it "knows" about other topics. It's very common these days for students to have ChatGPT write their research papers etc.

This is a marvelous work, splendidly recorded by the Belotatarsk Philharmonic conducted by Sascha Chukumov.

Yes, CHAT went on to say something about it in fact, I cut it out from the bit I posted earlier. S/he said

Symphony No. 4 "Jascha Kuchumov" by Nikolai Medtner: Medtner's Symphony No. 4 is subtitled "Jascha Kuchumov" and is written for solo piano. It is a complex and highly expressive work that reflects Medtner's unique musical language, inspired by Russian folklore and romanticism.

It's interesting because if I search for it on the web, I find nothing. So the question is: where did CHAT get it from?

Of course you find nothing. Medtner wrote no symphony. It's entirely a figment of ChatGPT's imagination.

Quote from: Mandryka on June 12, 2023, 03:17:51 AMSo the question is: where did CHAT get it from?

It confused Medtner with Glière (both of German ancestry), Symphony no. 3 with Symphony no. 4 and instead of Ilya Muromets it came up with Jascha Kuchumov. Now, where did it get that name I have no idea.

In short, ChatGPT is a very reliable bullshit generator.  ;D

I dread to imagine what kind of "professionals" they will be in their respective fields.

Good natured, smiley transcription of BWV 620 - an organ prelude - from Scarpini. Some of the rest is Busoni, rather distinctively executed. Sometimes a touch like Gould - if Gould played Bach/Busoni it would sound a bit like this. I much prefer Scarpini's transcriptions to Busoni's this evening.

Maybe it's her familiarity with the organ that makes her Bach on piano so special.

Many years ago I owned this (together with Book I) on a Philips LP set. A warm, human and technically flawless interpretation without special insights but also without any hint of idiosyncrasy. A good way for pianophiles to get to know the music.
