Title: Hello!
Post by: absolutelybaching on June 15, 2021, 08:04:25 AM
Hello all: mad Britten fan here.. though also mad Bach, Vaughan Williams and Purcell fan here. Looking forward to future conversations.
Currently going through my music collection for anything by anyone that lasts less than 10 minutes (there are about 3,600 of them).
After that, it will be a return to playing things at random, but always with the 18th and 20th centuries at the foreground.

Best wishes,
Howard

Welcome.

What's your favorite version(s) of Les Illuminations? I'm always looking for new ones to try.

Well, I only know of two: the Britten and the Marriner. And I'd take the Britten any day, I'm afraid. I don't think you can beat John Shirley Quirk's Ferryman, nor (of course!) Pears' Madwoman. Nor, come to that, James Blades' percussion efforts.

Welcome.

I'm sorry to be very conventional about it! But, I prefer a tenor singing it to a soprano, no matter it was written for Sophie Wyss to sing originally. And so I like the Pears version, though Ian Bostridge is good too.

That's okay. The Pears / Goosens is probably my favorite recording of the work.

The Bostrisge is good too, but I think a Proms concert he did of the work even better.

Thanks for the answers ! The Britten is hard to locate. I was considering this version. It seems to have a good pedigree.

Well, thanks for showing me a recording with which I was not previously familiar.

The Britten recording is available as a digital download easily enough at places like Prestomusic. If you want physical product, it does appear that acquiring it as a piece of silvered polycarbonate is trickier than it ought to be! I hadn't realised it was so out-of-print: sorry to have suggested you acquire the unacquirable!

Welcome from me too Howard. I've always been a VW fan but am increasingly appreciating Britten's orchestral music (most recently the Violin Concerto). I don't think that Britten and Vaughan Williams had much time for each other's music!
Hope you enjoy your time on the Forum.
