I wonder if "Putting shells on Bach album covers" will become a trend.

Photographer: "Hey, I know how you can look tough. How about we knock over the chair?"
The Artiste: "Yeah!"
Photographer: "And look super serious."
The Artiste: "Can do."

I dunno. Sometimes you complain about a lack of literalism, and now you're against this. Or is your objection that in this case, "sheep" is clearly supposed to be a plural noun?

Could be a lost sheep, or the others are just out of the frame.
I really don't see how any of the last 5 could be close to "worst", not even the one with the guitar player. The others might not be great fits for the music but I think they are all pretty good pictures

I think the 2 Bach-shell covers are really nice, actually.

Yep. Also, nothing wrong with the guitarist.  :D

there is a reason:

and maybe this:

Bach and Golden section

and

Bach

I think the sheep photograph is cute.

Agreed. She's young and pretty. The photograph belongs, imho, in the "silly, stupid, banal" category.

The cd with Brahms sonatas (Bengtsson/Kavtaradze) is a real design disaster. Mme. Kavtaradze has a whole series of extremely horrible and badly painted portraits by a Stefan Blondal, king of kitsch >:D

Jesu meine Freude: "..... deals with a believer's bond to Jesus who is addressed as a helper in physical and spiritual distress, and therefore a reason for joy!" JOY!
The motet ends with the same four-part setting as the first movement, with the last stanza of the hymn as lyrics, "Weicht, ihr Trauergeister" (Flee, you mournful spirits). The final line repeats the beginning on the same melody: "Dennoch bleibst du auch im Leide, / Jesu, meine Freude" (You stay with me even in sorrow, / Jesus, my joy).[
This is an excellent photograph.

Indeed, there are a wealth of references that can be found to the symbolism of a nautilus shell as an expression of order and geometry and grace/beauty that seem quite appropriate for the Bach family.

We are once again in the territory of our friend Peter using this thread as a proxy for "I don't understand the cover". I feel like a broken record but the message is not getting through apparently: this a thread for bad-looking covers, not really nice ones that sail over your head.

I don't have a problem with the sheep cover. And there's plenty of precedent for Bach recordings, e.g.

which admittedly looks better.

...though the Supreme Dicks' unoriginal variant deserves consideration

This is a legend in the "ugly jazz covers" category. Puzzling because Dave McKenna's music is far removed from such imagery.

IMO Herbie Mann's Push Push is worse, but I'm sure I've inflicted that one on you, so won't repeat it. The curious can Google.  ::)

This one is a straightforward Agnus Dei painting, so perfect match to the music.

My like was referring to sheep being in the title of a work, so I don't know why this is an issue to PPP  @Peter Power Pop?

I think that the original image was referring to the Lamb of God and his sacrifice (in terms of religious terms and knowledge).

It's an excellent photograph but I don't associate walking a tightrope with the emotion of joy. Although finishing the walk without falling off might well be an occassion for joy.

The sheep cover is cute but it is a cliche.
