Title: Your Favorite Purchases Of 2021 (So Far...)
Post by: Mirror Image on July 13, 2021, 01:24:07 PM
I’m not sure if this topic has been brought up this year or not, but we’re at the halfway point and I’m wondering what have been your favorite purchases of the year so far?

I have A LOT of purchases to list, but I’ll take my time before giving a list.

I think there is a thread already, but let the mods merge them if that’s the case.  :)

This one would definitely be on my 2021 list:

Okay, so I’ve assembled my list and I’ll just post a ‘Top 10’ and in no particular order:

Only purchases are allowed? I'm thinking of discoveries instead. I have plenty of them.

Yep, only purchases. I know you’ve made plenty of discoveries, Cesar. ;) You’re welcome to start your own thread of course.

Features the Concerto for Two Pianos (which I prefer to the single piano version), Flos Campi (in a performance which the composer himself recommended) and, one of my favourites, the 'Fantasia on the Old 104th' (in a version featuring the organ). I was delighted to find that another recording existed apart from the (excellent) one with Boult and Peter Katin (who, told me that the piano part was especially difficult).

Best purchase (in terms of bargain) has to be this 25-CD set:

Which I snagged for GBP 25.62 in Presto's winter sale.  Not appreciating the sheer physical size of the thing.  I thought I must have bought LPs by mistake. ???

Favourite (in terms of number of plays) would probably be this :

Has an attractive and intriguing quality - and simple listenability - which I hadn't found in White Nights, so came as a pleasant surprise. :)

And this:

For the 11 minutes of Five Fragments op.42, composed just before the Fourth Symphony. :blank:

Then there's this:

Just gorgeous.  As you might expect. 0:)
That looks like a lovely Bernstein set!  I don't have that one but do have this one.  And like you, the size of the box threw me as it's really LP-sized [Where to store it?!].  https://www.amazon.com/Leonard-Bernstein-Symphony-Gustav-Mahler/dp/B003Z9Q4WG/ref=sr_1_2?crid=3VPYHA4G1XZ5H&dchild=1&keywords=leonard+bernstein+symphony+edition&qid=1626255844&s=music&sprefix=leonard+bernstein+the+symphony%2Cpopular%2C177&sr=1-2

I've heard that R. Schumann "Peri" work before--though not that particular recording; yes, it's very beautiful.

I am buying far less and it's often a bit hit and miss nevertheless, but I can single out two:

Probably my favorite (live) recordings of both pieces now, while the serenade might be a bit to internationally virtuosic (and not bohemian enough) for some, the quartet is white hot and probably the best I have heard.

a very nice compilation of recordings not easy to find otherwise and they are among the best recordings of both Sinfonietta and the 2nd quartet and the sound is decent early stereo despite the "magazin release" (not sure how close they get to master tapes etc.)

The one that I posted, although featuring historical recordings, was just released this year.

Here's another one (new recording):

Do you think the new Barbirolli/Sibelius remastering is a significant improvement on previous versions?  It was the first set of Sibelius I knew (on LP) and I love it to bits but was a bit underwhelmed when I finally got it on CD.  Perhaps I have too many other Sibelius cycles now!

I would say run, don’t walk over to Amazon and pull the trigger on this Sibelius Barbriolli set. To these ears, it sounds better than the later EMI set put out. Warner did a find job with the remastering and I love the original LP covers in these types of boxes from them.

2021 is an ***abominable*** year; my aunt died, my mother died, my father died, I have nine hundred million, billion, trillion legal/financial hassles, and I have to sell a house as a result--sucking all of my time, energy and soul. The Western forests are burning to the ground, Europe is suffering epic flooding, and a peculiar species of hairless ape is serving as Petri dish for new viral mutants...

But at least there is music.

Pauline Oliveros, Crone Music (suggested by someone here, thanks!)

That must be tough. These are hard times for many people, surely, and in the recent two years, we've also had several deaths in my family and other severe problems as well. I can only wish you some future happier experiences too, hopefully within long. Music is indeed one source of energy to deal with the troubles.

As regards my buyings, there's been many; some most recent highlights were the CPO box of Reger violin and cello works; Mascagni's old Cavalleria with Levine/DG; Bernius and Mathe in orchestral music by K A Hartmann, Beethoven and Schubert/Carus label, plus Bloch's violin concerto etc. on an old Naxos.

But these are just a few of them.

I feel you... Though my father died already a few years ago and my mother has so far survived the pandemic, the current combined climate crisis-pandemic is a sh%t show of epic proportions which is not likely to go away any time soon.

I guess we have to soldier on... And music, art in general, is indeed a big comfort.
And I'm glad we can share our love for it here, and keep each other sane and in touch with the better things in human existence.

Take care!  :)

I bought it from a seller on eBay --- I made him an offer and he accepted. This box set has been wonderful so far, but I’ve barely listened to anything from it. And yes, this box set is expensive and was expensive even with the offer I made the seller. The fact that Hungaroton haven’t reissued it makes it even more difficult to find copies.

Very sorry to hear that.

This year we had some happy news, in that my daughter married her lovely Canadian BF (although she recently had Coronavirus, but is recovering now). However, sadly, my brother-in-law, who lives in Sweden and who I am very fond of is now terminally ill. Music can be a great source of consolation at such times.

All strength to you.

You’re welcome. Since Bartók is such an important composer for me, I wanted the physical box set or I wouldn’t have bought it all. It took me several years to find this set at a price that wasn't astronomical. By the way, do you own the Decca set?

Well, I just wanted to point how excellent it is. ;) I think it’s OOP as well. :-\ You might as well wait for The Hungarian Soul box set from Warner. If I were you, I’d snag this set as soon it comes out as I’m not sure how long they’ll keep it in-print.

Recent purchase I'd long thought about but held back on. Highly impressed, definitely makes the list.

Out of several disks released this year that I have I found this one from Alpha to be very pleasant. It has a very nice programme and the recording quality is very good too.

Indeed they are, Jeffrey. The Shostakovich Sladkovsky set has surprised me I must say.

It truly is a wonderful recording. Much more than pleasant --- gorgeous, thoughtful performances. I initially didn’t like the performances, but I’ve since become more open to the idea of a smaller orchestral sound, especially in Strauss' Vier letzte Lieder for example.

Why I preger della Casa to Norman in that work.

Yes, the Berg and Zemlinsky are equally well-performed.

I wouldn’t say that Norman’s Vier letzte Lieder is overrated, but it does seem to eclipse other performances that are just as deserving of the same kind of accolades.

I would say run, don’t walk over to Amazon and pull the trigger on this Sibelius Barbriolli set. To these ears, it sounds better than the later EMI set put out. Warner did a find job with the remastering and I love the original LP covers in these types of boxes from them.

Warner didn't do the remastering of the Barbirolli themselves, they hired the French Art & Son Studio, who has done a lot of great mastering for them lately - they also did the forthcoming Warner Furtwängler box.

Ah, very good. Thanks for the feedback. It’s great to see you around here, J.A.W. 8)
