Pohjolas Daughter

I remember watching an episode of Dr. Who way back when (the original series).  One (at least) of the Dalek's was trying to chase after Dr. Who which, at that time, seemed to me as being "campy" rather than scary.  I do realize that it's also a matter of what one saw and when.

Regarding newer versions, I did like some of the later ones which I've watched with people like Eccleston and Tennant (haven't watched all of them nor most).

Daleks running around yelling "Exterminate!" is pretty much a cliche.
Campiness was a bit intentional: the series was for many years seen as a kid's show.  But it did include some deep dark themes. Genesis of the Daleks, from the Tom Baker era, deals with using time travel to change the past and genocide; Earthshock(from the Davison years) was one of the most jarring and emotional stories, since it climaxes with the death of one of the Companions.

I always liked that stairs could defeat them!  Also made it a satisfying twist in the new Who when they started being able to fly.

Someone that used to post here knew that I was big into Doctor Who and he gave me a Dalek stamp.  But even better, he turned it into a paper weight, which I still keep.

Some travel TV, episode one of season three of The Righteous Gemstones.  I had never watched an episode of the show, so I opted to give it a shot.  I am a big fan of Danny McBride.  I like Adam Devine.  I like John Goodman.  I like Edi Patterson.  I like Shea Whigham.  Everything seemed lined up.  The episode just falls flat.  I get that it's not strictly a comedy in the style of Eastbound & Down, one of the greatest sitcoms of the century, and that's fine, it's just that almost everything just misses.  The only scene that works includes Shea Whigham and the decidedly uncomedic Stephen Dorff.  Very strange.

Yeah, that show was OK at first and then went downhill for me. I really enjoyed Vice Principals and of course, Eastbound and Down. I need to revisit Eastbound.

I have a card that I bought to send to a friend, but still have in a drawer.  It's a cartoon-type drawing of a couple of Daleks stuck at the base of a set of stairs with one of the Daleks saying ...ah, I found it!

By pure coincidence, in regard to this thread's recent discussions, we have been catching up on Season 9 and later.

I dig it. I'm smiling because the comparable shows stateside were arguably Lost in Space (with an at-times-cloying combination of sentiment and camp) and Star Trek whose first pilot, "The Cage," the network declined for being "too cerebral." This oprning season of Dr Who I'm enjoying the balance of camp and cerebrum.

Walked into Barnes and Noble and discovered the Jodie Whittaker years have been put together as a set, to join the previous "New Who" Doctors.

I was impressed by the 50% Off sticker until I discovered it's listed for the same price on Amazon.

It is based on the 1987 film of the same name written by James Dearden. The series aired on Paramount+ from April 30 to May 28, 2023. In October 2023, the series was cancelled after one season.

Just started season one.
We're nearing the end of the series, and it's been such a reliable source of joy. Fun scripts, a willingness to be bold with wild standalone episodes (a one-off horror ep, a one-off drug trip ep, etc.), and a whole gallery of exceptional Native character actors (plus Marc Maron) hamming it up in big, boisterous cameos. I'm thinking the ending will be a little sappy but whatever. It's a blast.
