I've been quite lucky lately in finding several OOP items from the RCA Heifetz Collection.
Most of the times I'm able to find what I'm looking for, or the item is reissued - but it can take a year or two! :)
Only thing I can think of right now are the recordings Nathan Milstein did in the 30's of the Tchaikovsky and Bruch concertos, as issued on Biddulph. I have these recordings on Naxos, and they're nice but I remember the Biddulph as being superiorly transferred.
Ah, and yes: volume 2 of the Schnabel/LvB sonatas cycle on Pearl! ;D

Yes, nice performances. I have both on Naxos, Biddulph and Arlecchino. Can't remember whether Naxos or Biddulph is the better transfer, however. If I remember, I'll give it a test this evening.

Retransfers of their Shostakovich quartet cycle (the Consonance CDs were WAY too shrill), their Beethoven quartet cycle (the vinyl is now costly and hard to find, at least in the US, and I don't think these were ever issued on CD), plus whatever else may be in Russian archives. Melodiya...please? Brilliant...a nice big collector box to go along with your other Russian performer sets?
The Frederick Stock double-CD set formerly but not now available from Biddulph...and others from this conductor (which would include the Milstein Tchaikovsky noted in other posts above...one of my favorite performances of the piece).
The Enescu-as-violinist recordings, including a CD's worth of solo work once available on Biddulph, and various pieces with Lipatti (last released on Philips but now OOP, I believe) and other accompanists. I do now own copies of these, thanks to very kind collectors out there who took pity on me after more than four years of searching...but I'd still like "legit" releases for any notes or additional items. Besides, I have been told that there are a number of private, radio broadcast and other performances that would easily fill one or more additional CDs, but have never been officially released.
Several items once released in limited number by the Chicago Symphony but now long out of print: LvB sym. 4 and several otherwise unreleased performances by Reiner, plus lots of things by other conductors with that orchestra. Based on posts by Heck on CMG and others over the years, I am given to understand that there are many treasures that deserve to see the light of day once more (or perhaps for the first time)--the two still-available multi-CD sets apparently being the tip of the iceberg. I actually contacted the symphony's representatives last week to urge reissue and broader marketing of some specific previously-released items, and was told basically that they would take this under advisement. I won't hold my breath, but will try to remain hopeful.
The Remington catalog. Yes, there were some pretty so-so items in it, but there were also some real gems. Finding near-mint vinyl copies is like finding hen's teeth, and very few of the recordings have EVER been issued on CD. The late-career Enescu Bach sonatas & partitas have seen issue on budget labels, and Appian has released the Barere Carnegie Hall recordings, but what about the rest of the catalog?
And this wouldn't be a reissue...BUT...does everyone remember the news announcement from about two or three years ago that one or more enormous radio archives had been "discovered" in Russia, and that these contained several decades of live performances by major and lesser-known Russian and other artists? Whatever happened to these fabled archives? What's in 'em? And how come the market hasn't been flooded with examples of their contents? Inquisitive (and acquisitive) people want to know!

The Bach A minor and E major concertos that Milstein recorded in 1967 (with "chamber orchestra"), together with the D minor double concerto with Erica Morini (1964). The EMI (France) CD also contained the Bach (Goldberg) sonata in C for two violins (Milstein and Morini). I bought the CD in FNAC for €6 many years ago. The performances are immaculate, and classical. I keep recommending it, since it's a very fine disc indeed, but it's probably now only available in Outer Mongolia.
I'm desperately looking for:
Bruckner Symphony No. 6 conducted by Bongartz (Berlin Classics).
Nielsen Symphony No. 5 performed by Horenstein/New Philharmonia (Unicorn).
Haydn's Creation conducted by Hogwood (Decca).

Andreas Staier's recording of the Schubert piano sonatas D. 958,959 and 960. The 958 and 959 were re-released on the Elatus imprint, but the 960 is in OOP limbo. :(

I wish DG would release its Avant Garde series of LPs in a similar CD format, reproducing the original artwork. (They originally appeared in the 1960s, if I recall.) Some of the material has made it to CD elsewhere, but not all (I could be mistaken), and it would be nice to have some of the more obscure works. Here is one that I particularly liked, with works for chorus:

Sorry, I have no idea what killed the project. Perhaps Decca (L'Oiseau Lyre) pulled the plug the same way DG did on Gardiner's Cantatas? I know Hogwood is no longer associated with the AAM, and records for different labels now.

Dear Bill,
Decca have not informed us of any plans to re-release or finish these discs. As you suggest it would be lovely to be able to complete the set. At this stage in a volatile recording market it is not viable for Decca to do so but we hope, as you do, that it may be a future possibility.

I think that only the Ligeti
Lux aeterna has received any real support from DGG, with its inclusion in the
Clear or Cloudy box set. It's a fine performance, and - ultimately - a great box set (not too expensive, either); still, that looks like it would be a nice re-release.
As for me, I would like to see Harnoncourt's recording of
Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln re-released in the States. I think, though, I am not sure, that it's still in print elsewhere.
Dohnányi's Wagner recordings in Cleveland on Decca wouldn't hurt, either. They re-released Haitink, Barenboim, Boulez, and Böhm: a couple more sets couldn't hurt.

Doremi has reissued the complete cycle in aything but shrill sound. In fact, they went the other way, doing a bit too much high frequency filtering, but overall the sound is acceptable. The performances are far, far more than that.
It would be nice to see M&A or Pristine Audio rerelease Richter's Leipzig recital containing the last 3 Beethoven sonatas.
A reverb-less transfer of Maryla Jonas's Chopin Mazurkas would also be wonderful (*mutters something about hell and cold temperatures*).
Ah okay, I recall one thing that I *really* would like to hear on CD: Fiorentino's Chopin. There's a huge chunk of recordings from the '50s and '60s which have never appeared (except for the complete Nocturnes, OOP naturally).
Any other recordings by Feinberg, Ginzburg and Yakov Fliere would be very welcome too.

All of Pearl's catalogue that is OOP....not that I would buy all of these cds, but I do wish I had the option to easily purchase the ones that I want when I want.

I also recently bought Sawallisch's Ring, but haven't listened to it much yet, except for spotchecking some orchestral highlights. Yes, I am one of those people for whom the orchestra is just as important as the singers. In fact, I see the singers as just additional instruments in the overall fabric of sound, so to speak. I didn't even check which singers are in that Ring. I just saw, Sawallisch, good, Bayerisches Staatsorchester, very good, let's order that.

Schreier's Mime is up there with Graham Clark for Barenboim, though I prefer his Loge because I like the character. He doesn't get as out of control as Clark (or even Heinz Zednik) does in that last monologue of Loge's in
Rheingold, but there is some quiet menace there. Schreier is probably my favorite tenor, so I am probably biased, though.
I've never checked out Sawallisch's
Ring, but if the price came down on it, I'd consider it. My music library is pretty light on the Sawallisch.

I suspect that now Rostropovich has gone, and his feud with Kogan can be buried, someone might be able to re-issue this -- although being a 1952 recording, it is now well out of copyright. A good alternative, if it's still around, is the 1997 recording by Vadim Repin, Daniel Yablonsky and Boris Berezovsky (coupled with an excellent Shostakovich second piano trio).

The example you give is of an
author's intellecual property right - 70 years after the author's death in the EU.
Rights to a recording/performance are called
"related" or "neighbouring" rights (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Related_rights) - 50 years after the recording was made in the EU.
Sometimes longer in the US - the reason why, for instance, many Naxos Historical issues are not available in the US!

So, if I understand this correctly - the recording is out of copyright 50 years after recording IF the composer has been dead for at least 70 years (or less, depending on country)? Which means that if today I record a piano improvisation, I will lose my "neighboring" rights (for the performance) in 50 years but I'll get to keep my "author's" rights as long as I live (which might be less but could also be more), and my heirs will be able to profit for another 70? Copyright law is amusing. ;D ;D ;D
Copyright laws do not make much sense. They are more about greed than justice. The time limits are too long. I read the first copyright law in UK (late 17th century?) was something like this:
Copyright is granted for 14 years and if after this period the author is still alive the copyright is extended by another 14 years. Now, this makes sense! The author had 28 years time to earn copyright fees and in less than 30 years the copyrighted material was free to be used by others (beneficial for the society).

Not quite. There is a difference between
performing, and
creating. If you create a piece of music, the copyright lasts for 70 years -- ie, if others perform your piece of music, they have to pay you a royalty. But the copyright on your
performance only lasts for 50 years. Which, in my view, is quite long enough; most recordings are recreations where after 50 years the composers are usually dead .. and the principal performers as well. In any case, the performers have all had 50 years of royalties.

Someone's talking about CSO records got me to thinking about things that have never been issued on CD or LP, but which I have heard as radio broadcast tapes, which I would like to see released.
One is an absolutely incredible performance--the best I have ever heard--by the CSO of the Beethoven Emperor Concerto cond by Andre Previn with Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. Believe it or not, Martinon taped about 30 or so Bach Cantatas in his brief tenure as MD which deserve to be released.
Then there is a wonderful Schubert Symphony cycle by the Cleveland Orch conducted by Pierre Boulez, of all people.
I also heard a magnificent Beethoven Symphony cycle with the Boston Sym conducted by Ferdinand Leitner which deserves to be released, from the 1980's, I believe.
OK, moving on to reissues. First, a few things that were on LP, but as far as I know have never been released on CD.
A Melodiya issue of the Haydn Trumpet Concerto cond by Rudolf Barshai with trumpeter Timofey Dokschitzer.
The Bartok Violin Concerto 2 with Perlman/Previn/LSO.
The Dorati set of the Beethoven Symphonies with the Royal Phil.
OK, now for a few OOP CDs--
The Caprice label's 3 CD set of the 6 Stenhammar String Quartets. I have them, but everyone deserves to have them available.
The complete cycle of the Beethoven Symphonies under Mengelberg from 1940 from a reputable label. It is available as a pirate issue from the disreputable Archipel label.
Speaking of Melodiya, the first ever complete recording of Moniuszko's Halka was done at the Bolshoi - conducted by Kondrashin (recorded 1952, though the production was from 1949). This was issued by Melodiya on 3 LPs in 1954, and never reissued in any form. I would really, really, really love to see that put on CD!!! ::)

Weills's "Street Scene" on Decca.
I would like Serkin's recording of Beethoven's second piano concerto reissued, or at least a PM from the owner of an older issue of this performance. :)

I wish EMI would resissue the Elisabeth Schwarzkopf Songbook series of LPs, in their original order. I know much of the material has been reissued, but, in their original format, each was a mini recital in itself. They did bring out a box set, some time ago, and called it The Elisabeth Schwarzkopf Songbook, but this turned out to be just a collection of songs from various different recitals, not the LPs I was thinking of. I'd like to see the original LPs on CD, with a booklet containing the original notes, texts and translations. Given EMI's current situation, though, I'll assume it'll be a cry in the wilderness.

I am also buying this the SECOND it hits the shops.
In posting on the Brahms Chamber thread, I was reminded that the Hollywood String Quartet recordings have drifted out of availability again, and the Testament CDs--especially of their Brahms piano quartets w/ Aller and the Beethoven late quartets--are going for rather silly prices on Amazon.
Maybe someone should drop a hint into the ears of the folks at Brilliant, who seem to be accessing some rather nice older performances from EMI and Melodiya for budget release boxes.

Yes the Barshai Shostakovich just (only recently :o) went OOP. Whatever versions are out there are for the taking. amazon.co.uk lists that item as currently unavailable. I checked with record store HMV, Zavvi and they tell me that it has just gone OOP- discontinued.

hmmm...and the plot thickens $:) !......What is really going on here I am not sure, maybe it is a British thing??, maybe not? ??? All I can say is I went ahead and bought the Jansons set instead and am very happy with it!! I really do hope that there is no problem with the Brilliant label in general as far as distribution in the UK is concerned. I think it's the Etudes. J Scott Morrison is the lead voice in a chorus of praise for the disc; apparently she's just the most wondrous interpreter of the music he's ever heard.
Oh, and I just remembered what's on the CD. It's the Preludes...

Incidentally, Constance Keene served as piano teacher to Artur Rubinstein's children, because he said he had never heard anyone (even Rachmaninov) who played as beautifully as she. Amazon now has a used copy of her Rachmaninov disc for $90.

That would be nice, thanks. Probably not mega-essential for Firebird but there are so few recordings of Symphony in E-flat and even less in print.
Ashkenazy recorded Shostakovich's 7th and 11th in St.Petersburg, haven't heard neither but am curious about 11th in particular since he delivers what I think is possibly fastest adagio ever. I like adagio at brisker pace, but that is
very fast at around nine and a half minutes (according to decca website tracklisting)
Cesare Valletti once recorded a disc of Duparc and Faure, which, as far as I know, has never been reissued on LP or CD. I would love to hear it. It is highly praised in Alan Blyth's Song on Record 2. I don't suppose anyone has it?

-Beethoven: Triple Concerto & Piano Concerto No. 4 by Paul Badura-Skoda and the Collegium Aureum
-Beethoven: Christus am Ölberge by Christoph Spering, Das Neue Orchester, and the Chorus Musicus
-Beethoven (again): Symphony No. 3 by Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations
Also wish more people would record Handel's Joseph and His Brethren...
I just need Sinopoli's DG Bruckner 9th to complete this composer/conductor/label partnership. Maybe I'll run into it one of these days at the second-hand shop.

I want Tahra to reissue the Hessian Radio/Scherchen recording of Hartmann's 6th symphony. I am enormously impressed by Fricsay in this work but I'd be really interested to hear Scherchen, who was Hartmann's teacher, after all. I'm a bit scared by the sub-22-minute timing on it, though.
It might be nice if Tahra could release a boxed set of Scherchen's "new music" recordings, given his considerable and lifelong commitment to the music of his time.
Anyone know of a recording on ERATO with James Conlon conducting Dvorak's "New World" Symphony? I don't remember the orchestra, might have been the London Philharmonic but maybe not. It was one of the first cds I had and I lost it about 10 years ago. Now I can't even find an image anywhere.

It's just been rereleased by Venezia as part of a 6 or 8 disc set (WTC & S&Ps for solo violin). You can order it from HMV Japan.
Is the 1966 version of Berwald's Sinfonia Singuliere by Sixten Ehrling available somewhere? The Bluebell cd seems to be oop.

I ordered those from don't remember which online seller, the order was pending for several months, then cancelled because the CD is no longer available (but it looked like it was from the way it was listed on the site). I would like to have that, too, especially since Neumann's disc of these tone poems with the CP is among my all-time favorite albums.

It's available on the Classical Records label - saw it at ArkivMusic. I have it on a different label, so I have no idea of sound quality.
