For me the R Strauss and J Strauss II pieces in 2001: A Space Odyssey did not work well. I think there are too many other associations with those pieces that don't have anything to do with the film. To me they feel like something taken from somewhere else and slapped onto this movie. In general I think music and sounds created specifically for a film are ideal. There are some exceptions where I think excerpts work. I think the Ligeti used in the movie was effective.

Quote from: LKB on Today at 07:09:43 PMCats are very affectionate, if properly socialized and cared for.

For instance my sister's cat, who was named Peanut Butter. PB was acquired by my sister as a kitten, and lived with us from 1960 until 1977, a respectable span of years.

Her purr was AMAZING, like an engine of Life. She was never hostile to anyone and was happy to socialize with any visitor to our home, whether two-legged or otherwise.

In 1977 she suffered a stroke which left her incapacitated. My father conferred with me, and we agreed that the sensible course ( as advised by the vet which had seen her ) was euthanasia. She was put to sleep, and laid to rest in our back yard under a favorite fruit tree, eulogized by my mother,

PB was family. She served at various times as court jester, footwarmer, teacher in the arts of Animal Dynamics, and one of the best friends a growing boy could ever hope for.

I hope that in the nest twenty years or so when my time comes, she'll be out there somewhere, waiting for me.

It touched me how the cat was meowing, clawing/reaching up at the door, and then jumped into her dad's arms.  :)

And, I hope that your buddy will be there to greet you (and the rest of your family)...sounds like she was well loved.

All the best,

PD

The Bear on Hulu - started the first season last night - not thrilled at first but now really enjoying - has been renewed for a 4th season; winner of numerous awards as described below. Ratings are outstanding, e.g. 99%, Rotten Tomatoes and 8.6/10, IMDB.  Dave :)

QuoteThe Bear is an American comedy-drama television series created by Christopher Storer for FX on Hulu. Jeremy Allen White stars as Carmy Berzatto, an award-winning chef who returns to his hometown of Chicago to manage the chaotic kitchen at his deceased brother's sandwich shop. The series has received critical acclaim, particularly for its writing, directing, acting, and production values. The first season received ten Primetime Emmy Awards including Outstanding Comedy Series and acting wins for White, Moss-Bachrach, and Edebiri. The Bear has also won four Golden Globe Awards, with acting wins for White and Edebiri and the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy in 2024. (Source)

Quote from: Symphonic Addict on Today at 05:38:08 PMJust wanted to put this here: The Symphony No. 2 by Ikuma Dan (1924-2001) is an epic piece and it has some very good melodies and material. I think it holds rather well with other significant Japanese instances. If I'm not wrong, it is in the also epic key of B minor (or B major).
