COUPERIN, François (1668-1733).

Le Parnasse ou L'Apothéose de Corelli.
London Baroque.
Recording: 2001 at St. Martin's, East Woodhay, Hampshire, England.
See back cover for details.

Apart from the Pardon my French narration, this is a fabulous disc. Very sensitively played with great care for all the finer details. I would go as far as to say that this is probably the best interpretation at all. Deeply affectionate and moving.

Reproductions of old LP jackets need some skill. Guess the skills were lacking here.

That's true. Beecham did a lot of recordings and is only ever brought up (predictably and gratingly) by the British press. I believe he introduced me to Lalo's Symphony.

Never tried anything by Konwitschny.

A few others -
1. Malcom Sargent
2. Dimitri Mitropoulos
3. Jean Martinon (although his French specialisation means he'll probably be of limited interest to me)
4. Georges Pretres
5. Hans Schmidt Isserstedt
6. Hans Vonk
7. Gary Bertini
8. Hans Swarovsky
9. Josef Krips
10. Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos
11. Ferdinand Leitner
12. Tugan Sokhiev
13. Erich Leinsdorf (I'm not an opera guy. So I'm talking orchestral music here)
14. Gerd Albrecht
15. Hermann Abendroth
16. Heinz Rögner
17. Eliahu Inbal (He's recorded a lot of music beyond Bruckner)
18. Gunter Herbig
19. Claus Peter Flor
20. Hans Zender
21. Michael Gielen
22. Kurt Masur (when has anyone ever mentioned him for a reference recording?)
23. Paul van Kempen
24. Rudolf Kempe (beyond Strauss)
25. Herbert Kegel
26. Michel Plasson
27. Joseph Keilberth
28. Lovro von Matačić
29. Otmar Suitner
30. Kurt Sanderling (A respected conductor AFAIK but not brought up often)
31. Sylvain Cambreling
32. Yoel Levi (Telarc conductor)
33. Jeffrey Tate (only know him for the Mozart cycle)
34. Horst Stein
35. Hans Müller-Kray
36. Ernst Bour

Quote from: Iota on Today at 02:13:02 PM:laugh:  Having lived a significant portion of my adult life in Arsenal territory, I know how deep and genuine a pleasure both Arsenal and Tottenham fans get from the other's failure. It's actually quite amusing at times.
Indeed!
But one of my best friends among football fans is a Spurs' fan. It's a shame that I did not know him through all the years of Arsenal dominance. We met only after Arsene left and the start of Tottenham having better seasons than the gunners for several years in a row. It's about time that Arsenal regain the upper hand!

Quote from: Iota on February 29, 2024, 07:41:21 AMThis is possibly the worst CD cover I've ever seen. There are lots of  grotesquely/hilariously bad covers in this thread, but this one is just plain wrong, there are no redeeming features whatsoever. No shock value, no garishness, just a vacuum of virtue.
(Ironically, if it were just a photo it might be quite interesting .. but it isn't.)

It's in the new Copland Conducts Copland set. As printed there, it is a nice photo, and the text, while not completely legible, is easier to read. Pethaps they manipulated the image a little for the CD jacket.

[It, so you don't need to scroll back three pages, is this:
]
But the very next CD in the set is nearly impossible to read. The Amazon image in this case is more legible than the physical CD jacket

I just read the interview. It was fun to read, just wish it were longer.  :-\
