I appreciate reading your impressions of the cantatas as you continue your pilgrimage. 0:)

My written impressions haven't been that long and thorough, but I'm glad you like reading them.  0:)

If I want to just ramble along with some cantatas I might use your essentials to guide me.

Cool, but be aware this is the "first round" of essentials. The list will be quite long, perhaps consisting of 50-100 cantatas.
If you want a carefully curated list of top 20 cantatas from me, I am afraid I am not ready to do that for a long time.  :-X

BWV 43, 44, 45 & 46

The choral of BWV 43 has an interesting "celtic" feel to it, but it isn't even by Bach, but by Christoph Peter (1626-1689).

Five works this time, because BWV 50 is just a 3-4 minutes long fragment. Clearly, BWV 51 is the "essential" one out of these. Great solo cantata for soprano and an old favorite of mine.  0:)

Among these four solo cantatas the shortest, BVW 54, is my favorite. BVW 56 is also nice enough to be called essential.

My favourite is no 60, the one Berg quotes in his violin concerto.

Today's menu was: BWV 57, 58, 59 & 60

BWV 57 is what it is. BWV 58 is "essential" to me, while the similar "Soprano-Bass duetto cantata" BWV 59 is less successful. As for the BWV 60 goes, it is definitely "essential." The arias, especially the first one are strong.

BWV 61 has always been one of my favourites (The Bass recitative is so magical!). Also BVW 63 is a strong cantata. The even-numbered cantatas are less impressive in comparison.

Can't wait for BWV 65! That's so far my favorite Bach cantata.

BWV 65, 66, 67 & 68

Unfortunately none of these cantatas impressed me to the point of making them feel "essential."  :P

Listened to no 104 a couple of times this week. A superb work, containing one of his most beautiful arias (for bass).

I look forward to hearing BWV 104 in the near future (before June I hope). Today I listened to BVW 75, which I didn't have time to listen to yesterday. It is a good cantata. Now I will slow down with the Bach cantatas, because I have the BIS discs (Bruhns, Bartók, Silvestrov & R. Strauss) to listen to...  0:)

Trying to get back to the 4 cantatas per day schedule. This was a nice bunch. BWV 78 and BWV 81 have an operatic/secular feel, while BWV 79 sounds interesting and BWV 80 is one of my all time favorites.

BWV 82, 83, 84 & 85

BWV 82 is of course the best of these four. I listened to the soprano version in E minor, because the bass version in C minor is so common. I also liked BWV 85 a lot, while BWV 83 and BWV 84 were less impressive in between.

Talking about BWV 82, I thought I was going crazy seeing BIS call it "Ich habe genung" because I remembered it being "Ich habe genug." Apparently both versions are correct and "genung" is just older form of the word.
