Title: How to embed Flash Video (like Youtube videos)
Post by: Dungeon Master on August 13, 2007, 06:03:08 PM
I have enabled the embedding of flash files within forum posts.

For those of you that like YouTube vids, this will enable you to add the video directly to the post, rather than just the link.

Here is a preview of what I mean:
http://www.youtube.com/v/aJ9p1r8OBbU

The technique and formating is as follows:
Press the Flash icon (http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/Themes/default/images/bbc/flash.gif) on the post page.
That will produce the following tags:
Code: [Select]
[flash=200,200][/flash]
By default, it sizes to 200x200 pixels
Replace the 200,200 to YouTube's 425,350
Then insert the YouTube URL (not the embed code)between the tags;

Final format for the above result:
Code: [Select]
[flash=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/v/aJ9p1r8OBbU[/flash]
This may become so popular that I may create a new forum sub-board to accomodate and collect great performances.

What do you think?

Love this idea, Rob. Very handy - saves clicking away. :)

I really don't mind clicking and I am not interested in learning a new format, but I think your choice in performance for an example is superb!  :)

Doesn't work for me. All I see is a white square where the video should be. Any other Mac users having the same problem?

Can you see the vids when you go to YouTube?

eg http://www.youtube.com/v/aJ9p1r8OBbU

Flash requires Adobe's Shockwave Flash player be installed on your browser. You can get it here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

Oddly, Rob, I can see your vid just fine. But the ones that were posted this AM are just white rectangles. I am using FireFox in Windows, and I watch youtube vids all the time. I checked the code they used and it was identical with yours... :-\

To embed YouTube vids on this forum, you need to follow the following format exactly:

Code: [Select]
[flash=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/v/aJ9p1r8OBbU[/flash]

Note the size 425,350

Note that the link structure is as above and all that you need to replace is the youtube string of letters at the end.

Rob, I just tried this and it works very nicely.  I posted a video someone has made of Artikulation by Ligeti, with the score "following along" with the music.  I noticed over 120 videos of Ligeti alone, so yes, you may have to carve out a separate space for all of these!

Thanks so much for enabling this great feature.

I can't get it to work. Could Vista be the culprit? It seems unlikely. I tried 3 different browsers (Firefox 2 and 3, IE 7). Does anyone have an idea about getting this to work?

Do you mean you can't see any videos? Any operating system and any browser should work, but you will need to have Adobe's Flash Player (http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash) installed.

Do you mean you can't  post videos? Look at my original post - the format needs to be followed exactly.

Hope this helps.

   Rob, I can see all the videos, I just can't post my own. That is I can't see them in my own post. And my post that you just copied has a white square in your post. When I copied your original post it worked (no longer available).

    I uninstalled and reinstalled the flash player, which works. This problem exists on all 4 browsers I use.

     This one I stole from G R E G shows up just fine.

     Yes, exactly. I can change the video to anything available, but it will only show up in someone else's post. If I could quote my quote in someone else's post, I bet it would work.
Title: Re: How to embed Flash Video (like Youtube videos)
Post by: Brewski on November 07, 2007, 02:28:25 PM
Look carefully at the line of code in Rob's original post.  If you cut-and-paste directly from YouTube, you have to remove the word "watch" from YouTube's code.  Your code should include the "/v/" followed by the correct code for your video.

I took the liberty of modifying your post above, and now it looks fine.   :D  Try it now!

Edit: I also changed the code in Rob's quote of your post, and that one works now, too.  Notice though, I didn't change the size to 425,350 but left it at 200,200, which is why it is a smaller image.

I replaced watch by /v/a/

No your War and Peace flash works.  The other flash that didn't was removed due to copyright infringement, it has nothing to do with this forum, it was done by youtube itself.  It happens all of the time because it's actually illegal to post clips of movies.

Now as I understand this, Rob introduced this flash possibilities, so that we may use it. Being quite enthusiastic about it. There is no mention of a limit in postings video's from you tube.
I think its a marvelous way to enhance the value of a posting considerably. Now some people say the pages load very slowly because of it. Not with me however, so that is a problem I do not experience.
Its rather fun to use this tool, so I will continue doing that, unless Rob tells me to stop it.

Harry, you are correct: early on with the new software, Rob did say that all the images (flash or otherwise) on the board were no problem from the GMG server's point of view.  However, while your system may load up images very quickly, there are others with slower computers (or slower connection speeds) for whom images take a much longer time to load.  This is also why some here have avatars and signatures turned to "off," so that image-loading doesn't delay the text showing up.

Just something to keep in mind.

O, dear, that makes it less fun.....
Well if that's the case we cannot download youtube video's anymore, but instead give links. Pity, I started to have fun with this.
I would rather keep my signature if you don't mind, and avatar, for if all the visuals are gone, and this is all about text, well......

I was always wondering if I'm missing something obvious. Any time I want to embed a Youtube video, it's a long quest searching for the truth.

- I know the Forum has a flash tag with a default "flash=200,200"
- Now I need to find the embeddable Youtube link. It's one with "/v/" in the URL. On youtube, it can easily be found after only 12000 mouse clicks you'll find the link.
- But it's with HTML tags and all... I extract the actual URL and put it between the forums flash tags.
- Oh, and 200x200 has to be changed to the correct dimensions.
- You can almost write a diploma thesis about this.

So, after only 4 Minutes the YT video is embedded here. Wow!

I'm sure I'm missing something very obvious. Please tell me I do... :)
There are a lot other fora where you simply put the URL into your posting and thats it, rest is done by the forum software...

You can convert the page URL to the '/v/' URI...it takes about 5 seconds to delete the extra characters and change the question mark 'is equal to' symbol (=) to a slash. If you can remember the string 'http://www.youtube.com/v/' (or have it copied somewhere on the hard-drive), then all you need is the YouTude ID for the video. (http://www.youtube.com/v/<youtube_id>)

I wonder if Rob can make website magic by making a special button for YouTube similar to the Amazon button. :)

Code: [Select]
[flash=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/v/xxxxxxxxxxx[/flash]
Use this template, just replace xxxxxxxxxxx with eleven character ID of youtube clip. You can find that either by clicking 'share' under youtube video and then copying last 11 characters of shortened url, or directly from address bar of your browser, 11 characters after v=

a) But what about the resolution? Shouldn't this also be correct?
b) Do we have a chance to embed with the time argument "t=" as in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QT_huKw5EVM#t=144s
c) A bit more gmg web server magic would indeed be nice.

     Do you mean for HD videos? I just use the default and don't choose a resolution.

     Under "share" they have HD and time options for at least some videos.

Thanks Rob.

About the performance issues: It normal internet speed, performance problems with Youtube embedded websites are typically:

a) Youtube servers themselves. Video broadcasting bandwidth is often slow..
b) Your browser initially and once has to load a flash plugin, which can be time consuming dependent on your system.

Anyway I think it's great to have that in fora because it's much easier to tell what we mean.

You asking?  8)

You need this code:

Code: [Select]
[flash=560,315]http://www.youtube.com/v/jv_jkju_iZg[/flash]
The dimensions in the opening flash tag you can modify to suit.

The key is that you take a YouTube URL, e.g.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jv_jkju_iZg

. . . take the video ID from after the equals sign, and plug that in after the last slash of the code above.

As an aside, this is the reason this thread is now a "sticky," so that it will be handy for people to refer to. The first post by Rob (a.k.a., Dungeon Master), also has the procedure Karl mentions to embed flash.

Flash is a security nightmare. It is used to transmit malware. It has been replaced as a video standard by HTML5. But not all websites have made the move to the new standard yet.

I thought it wasn't going to work any longer (after 1/1). So that's good. Chrome is quite pissed at me for continually telling to to f**k off when it wants to shut down Flash altogether.

I would dump Chrome, except my phone and tablet sync with my computer on so many things, it's very handy for saving links remotely and having them show up on my desktop when I log on. :-\

For that reason I kept with Chrome for far too long.  It stopped working with Outlook 365 and it was a huge resource hog on my work PC.  I switched to Firefox and imported everything over.  I installed Firefox on all of my PCs, my Phone and my Ipad and everything is hunky dory.

I used to use FF, did for years. Then (circa vers. 40) it got freaking humongous, and did its level best to own my computer. If they fixed that, I would go back to them. I always liked their extensions far better. There are Android versions, yes?

I removed Flash Player from my Macs to be safe(r) since it was no longer going to be supported and I thought that 99% of sites were now using HTML5.  Is it safe then to post Flash videos here?  And what about viewing videos on youtube?  I dug around a bit more and found this article:

https://www.pcworld.com/article/2876307/so-long-flash-youtube-now-defaults-to-html5-on-the-web.html

Is there a way that we can embed videos here but using HTML5 instead of via Flash?

Gurn,

I did read that one could still download Adobe's Flash Player (if one needed it), but since they're no longer supporting it, it's getting increasingly unsafe to use--from what I understand anyway.

Well, what I DON'T understand is why this issue still exists. Youtube videos aren't Flash anyway, I download them routinely, and they are always MP4. Of course, my downloading software converts them to that on the fly, but the posting software here converts them TO Flash on the fly too, so why not pick a format that's more current? IOW, it's a Simple Machines issue, at least until someone convinces me otherwise.  :)
