The picture depicts someone walking towards (not away from) the viewer. This may create some hope.

This bit, I'm afraid I cannot agree with. Repeatedly accusing me of lying, and/or being stupid, about the functions of Idagio that I was using almost every day (insisting that those functions didn't exist after he tried the app for one day) was not the behaviour of someone who was being careful.

Nor was he being careful when he repeatedly insisted he was quoting someone else rather than me, to avoid admitting that he had read one of my posts, because he had previously insisted he wasn't reading my posts. Yet the material he had quoted hadn't been said by anyone else.

These are not characteristic of being careful but of being quite ridiculously stubborn. Which also seems to be why he left. He had a lot of value to add to GMG, but more recently I put him on ignore because it simply wasn't worth the drama that came with the value. I often found what he was listening to highly interesting, but even indicating that with the Like button was liable to be seen as outrageous behaviour on my part.

Oh, I checked again and you're right!  On first glance, I had assumed that it was a photo of someone walking away.  Regarding his comment, I believe that it's a reference to a Douglas Adams' book title "So long, and thanks for all the fish" [which is about someone--or something--leaving].

It seems a bit ambiguous, but when I dropped the image into google image search, it came up with this:

He went to the great trouble of deleting every one of his posts here except for the ones what justify his departure, I can't imagine he has any thought of returning.

The quote is part of Douglas Adams' genius trilogy in four parts; "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".  One of the many great quotes in this book (which should be compulsory reading) is;

"A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools."

The quote in question is;
"The last ever dolphin message was misinterpreted as a surprisingly sophisticated attempt to do a double-backwards-somersault through a hoop whilst whistling the 'Star Spangled Banner', but in fact the message was this: So long and thanks for all the fish."
(it turns out that the earth was just a giant lab experiment run by dolphins.....)

Thanks for explaining that. I didn't understand before.

Quote from: vandermolen on April 20, 2023, 12:23:05 AMI totally agree with you Harry.
I had some very nice personal exchanges with Howard and, as you say, thought of him as a very nice person, not to mention the wonderful username and Muppet avatar.
I hope he returns.

We've seen it before: members deleting all their posts before leaving,  erasing every trace of any of their contributions to the forum.

I never quite "got" the motives behind such a move and stopped trying long time ago.

I didn't appreciate Florestans comments either but what the heck. He's from another culture than me, and I'm not here to tell people the right and wrongs according to my upbringing. And certainly not in threads about music.

I think the key (and it took me some time to achieve this) is to not take anything posted on any forum too seriously.

If Florestan's comments represent his cultural norms, then I'll check the U.S. State Department web site to see if there are any travel warnings.   ::)

Oh please. Has the US really got to the point where noticing that a woman is a woman is worthy of a travel warning? You're more likely to be harmed going to an American high school.

The Guidelines a quite clear. Don't post anything that could be considered offensive, Not Safe For Work, or not suitable for children. Even if it is a commercial album cover. If you flout this rule, and your post gets removed, take it on the chin, learn from and move on. Don't behave like a 4-year-old.

I was thinking of something along the lines of absolutelybaching's objection, "Be advised that in Romania 'F*ck you' is considered a cordial greeting and drawing firearms would not be considered an appropriate response."  Maybe it is something for a Xenophobe's guide, rather than an official travel warning.

Right, so having basically sorted this out without your input on another thread, you've chosen this particular moment to step in and basically go back to the position that people might not be able to post the album that they've been listening to or are talking about. Nicely done.

The idea that mainstream record labels and performers might be considered to be purveyors of smut is absurd. I'll say it again: in those cases the image is not the problem, the conversation is.
