BEETHOVEN Complete Piano Sonatas / Yves Nat [here (http://www.micmacmusic.com/product_info.php?products_id=828)]
If this is moved could we have separate download and physical threads? I, for one, have no interests in the download side.
A bargain is a bargain is a bargain. If you've no interest in download bargains, just skip 'em. ;)
Just saved £1.25 on organic asparagus at the Marylebone Waitrose!!!!
No super-duper bargain thread could possibly go without mention of the Barshai Shostakovich Symphonies set on Brilliant Classics. ;)
;D
Whilst I congratulate you on your purchase, I do question anyone buying Asparagus at this time of the year, for that means it's travelling a long way. Asparagus depreciates quite noticeably in quality after it is picked and would urge anyone to keep their asparagus eating to a seasonal window (May-June, when you'll find me eating loads of the stuff!), to truly appreciate this vegetable in all it's glory.

Christ on a bike!!!
It's almost silly to have a separate bargain thread these days, when so many discs are dirt cheap ...
duly noted. You're in charge of finding us a restaurant when you come back to London! ;D
What's with the name and avatar - are you a birder Peregrine?
I suppose this thread is all about those CDs/DVDs or sets thereof which can be had for almost zero dollar/pound/euro/yen, etc. ;)
When I said "almost silly" I definitely didn't mean to denigrate your idea for the thread. I'm a bargain-hunter myself :) I should have said "almost redundant or superfluous" given how easy it can be to find outrageous bargains these days.
Seems pretty good, for anyone in need of a Shostakovich cycle (or another!):
http://www.mdt.co.uk/MDTSite/product/SU38902.htm
Naxos is making their ancient Beethoven symphonies cycle (http://www.classicsonline.com/catalogue/product.aspx?pid=491197) with conductors Richard Edlinger and Michael Halasz available for $10 download. The quality is, of course, decidedly mixed, but I can attest that the Edlinger performances are actually quite enjoyable.
Can't comment on the Edlinger cycle, but I had three volumes of the Halasz and promptly got rid of them. They weren't just uneven, they were decidedly uninspiring. :(In that box Halasz is only responsible for Nos. 3 and 6, but those are so clearly important that I will heed your counsel and cherry-pick.

On Amazon UK, what I presume is this disc (http://www.amazon.com/Shostakovich-Violin-Concertos-Dmitry/dp/B000009DR1) is available here (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tretyakov-plays-Shostakovich-Dmitry/dp/B000009DR1/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1195956483&sr=1-4) for 1p.
Shostakovich - Violin concerto nos. 1 & 2 (Yuri Temirkanov, USSR Symphony Orchestra, Victor Tretyakov, Russian Revelation)
I don't know if it's much good or not, but it looks above the usual 1p fare - so, it's here if anybody wants it :)
Well done sir!
Ahem ... madam.

I've just ordered a double decca of Zemlinsky's orchestral works with Chailly/RCO at amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zemlinsky-Orchestral-Works-Alexander-von/dp/B00008MLU3/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1196465652&sr=1-1) for £1.36. I'm not sure how to check how many copies are left though ???.
I got this delivered yesterday, so there must be more than one. ;D

If you are any music fan at all I don't see how you can live without this set:
which you can get for around $30. Simply scary-good playing from the Staatskapelle Dresden. I would go as far as to say at fortissimo no orchestra sounds remotely as terrifying as the SD, except maybe the Leningrad PO under Mravinsky. It is truly unreal how Jochum push this orchestra to the unfathomale brink of fortissimo at times and yet maintaining the kind of burnished and natural sound the SD is known for. Sure there are mannerisms here and there like in inserting crescendos where they are not in the score (especially in the 5th symphony). But the performances are so convincing you don't care or mind. The set is worth that price alone for the 5th and 9th symphonies. Simply put there are not other similar Bruckner performances in the catalogue.
I'd take Karajan/BPO or Celibidache/MPO over Jochum/Dresden anyday. You may, but this is the super-budget bargain thread and last time I checked neither HVK nor Celi's Munich cycle are bargains.
You may, but this is the super-budget bargain thread and last time I checked neither HVK nor Celi's Munich cycle are bargains.
What do you not like about Jochum's readings?
No, I saw Celi MPO set a while back for 18 USD shipped. Forgot which site, and the offer is probably expired now. I'll check later.I hope that's not Celi in full glacier mode. After listening to his absurdly slow 7, Tintner's rendition was a genuine revelation.

Sandor Vegh - Mozart Divertimenti & Serenades on Capriccio 10 CDs for about over GBP16 for the set. A real steal, with this set winning the Grand Prix du Disque, I think. Stylish and warmly phrased Mozart - played with panache!
I hope this counts - HMV has the Mariss Jansons Shostakovich Symphonies set on EMI in their stores sale for £20.Sure counts ! I think Amazon has it in the US for a tad over $30 which is quite a bargain. I didn't bite though, I have the Leningrad from a previous incarnation and it is pretty underwhelming.
Anybody know this?:

Not sure what to expect as the clips are very short but with Argerich in the youthful Burleske it's bound to be pretty good.
Sometimes, you gotta try and get the best 'bang for your buck', Don. So yes, it IS a primary factor for a lot of people.
Well of course you quickly get more music than you can possibly listen to in a reasonable time frame! :D
I just say this since because even a complete Haydn symphonies set that spans dozens of hours is considered not good enough (by Sorin's post) because there is a box set that has 100+ hours of more music. When do you find the time to even listen to so much music that the symphonies cycle alone would be considered too small of a box set for that nice price??? :o
Okay I really just think that Sorin's post just cracks me up! :D

Nothing funny about it: the Fischer set is highly regarded in and of itself, never mind that you also get the rare baryton trios, etc.My point exactly.

This Burleske is breathtaking. For once in this work it's the orchestra that's trying to keep up and not the pianist. Argerich's not just fire though; she coaxes melting lyricism from the slower passages, almost discovering new levels of profundity in this more or less monolithic piece. No sense of superficiality here. Good stuff. 8)
I wonder if this is a mispricing at £10 (10CD). On amazon.com and mdt it cost around £100. I wonder if it is any good. Testament is usually an expensive company.

Bertini's Mahler cycle going for $25!!
Wow!! Consider that one bought! Is it the complete cycle?Yes. Also includes the Adagio of #10. Oh, and Das Lied, too. :)
Wow!! Consider that one bought! Is it the complete cycle?
It's my favorite cycle (well tied with Gielen, but it's not as harshly modernistic as Gielen), buy with confidence. :)
Yes. Also includes the Adagio of #10. Oh, and Das Lied, too. :)

Cool, so Bertini is not conservative?
He's not excessively romantic, his performances are dramatic, instead of melodramatic. Many Mahlerites prefer histrionic performances, and would probably pass on Bertini. So just keep that in mind. ;D
I'm guessing he's something like Barbirolli?
He is often (rightly) compared to Kubelik, but Neumann is an apt comparison as well. Barbirolli (from the 5th I heard) is a bit more interventionist... Sorry for butting in 0:)

So if I really dig Barbirolli and don't like Abbaddo very much, will Bertini likely be a good match for me?
Yep. :)
Bertini's must have nice sound too, being recorded in the 80s, unless it's an early digital recording. :-\
It does sound incredible next to much of the competition, most of which was recorded a lot earlier. Despite the issues with some 80s recordings (Neumann's cycle somewhat included in this, IIRC, although not badly), this one has no sonic problems and the good and quite natural sounding recorded quality tends to be mentioned a lot in reviews.
Sweet!!
Bertini's must have nice sound too, being recorded in the 80s, unless it's an early digital recording. :-\
Performance-wise, I have quite a few Mahler cycles, and I'd rank Bertini near the top. His may well be the most consistent cycle I've heard, not a bad performance in the bunch. At that price, jump on it.
A quick note of dissent: I find Bertini's tempos can drag a bit, and occasionally the orchestra is revealed to be less that top-flight. Not sure about "most consistent cycle" - frmo what I've heard I'd probably nominate the Tennstedt, though it certainly doesn't compare for sound quality.
Tennstedt is only a notable for a decent 8th.
Even if with "Tennstedt" you meant "the Tennstedt box set", the 2nd (as I mentioned above), the 3rd, the 5th and the 7th are solid, the 9th is capable, the 4th is great, and the 8th is exceptional - again in my opinion, of course. My general point being: why dismiss Tenstedt?IMO the 2nd and 6th are the least of the boxset, but this is partly because the master lacks the heft these works above all others require. The 6th is interesting in that its approach is more "symphonic" than "dramatic". 3rd is regarded as a benchmark, the 4th is magic (can't go wrong with Popp for this symphony), and this recording of the 7th "revealed" the work to me for the first time.

Is this the version in the box set?
A phenomenal live 7th with the LPO, as well;
Is this the version in the box set?
Nope. BBC Legends, coupled with Mozart's Symphony No. 41. (Another brilliant performance.)Thank you. It is my next purchase. Unlike a lot of people, I love the M7. It's close to being a favorite. I like it more than 1, 2, 4, 5, and 9. My favorite is probably Bernstein's on DG. Unlike a lot of works, I am able to listen to lots of different versions and take away something from the experience. With some others, only one version will do. Probably most classical works are like that for me: one right version, and everything else.
"IMO the 2nd and 6th are the least of the boxset, but this is partly because the master lacks the heft these works above all others require."Tennstedt's Mahler box set is super-duper cheap this week at mdt.co.uk: http://www.mdt.co.uk/MDTSite/product//5729412.htm
"Tennstedt is only a notable for a decent 8th."
:o
On the contrary, I think the Tennstedt Mahler set is a big and exciting Mahler experience on its own merit -overall it's not the cleanest of recordings, but it is broad and gutsy enough to have the LPO contend with some of the big orchestra heavyweights in the Mahler corner. Neumann and the CPO do it with the emphasis on the music and not the big sound, resulting in some of the finest Mahler output I know of. So Tennstedt for big colours with Mahler or Neumann for sheer orchestral precision and mastery with Mahler, more so than anything in the mountains of Mahler I'm lucky enough to posess (other than the CSO Boulez Third, which has it's own light, and some of Inbals clear and brilliant takes).
Neumann isn't expensive, and can be found super-duper cheap.
My favorite is probably Bernstein's on DG.
Definitely get the Tennstedt, then! :)I just ordered this ^ Tennstedt Mahler 7/Mozart 41 disc. $20.25 on mdt.co.uk. I look forward to hearing it. M7 has been my Music of the Month since sometime in December (though I've been listening to Bernstein's DG M6 and Rattle's M8, too). I don't think I've ever heard M7 by Rattle. I liked R's M2 a lot back in the day, not as much now. In general, M7 has always been one I liked more than most of the rest. I only became aware in the past year that many people find it least worthy of the bunch. I can't imagine why, I love it so.
And I also liked the Gergiev. It's certainly a bit one-sided, but exhilarating in a way his Mahler 1st, for instance, was not. (IMO)
Otherwise yes, seconding Bernstein DG, and Gielen, Abbado/BPO (a slight edge over Abbado/CSO), the earlier Bernstein, Kondrashin (on Melodiya) and Rattle/CBSO as 7ths I've enjoyed, roughly in order of preference. And Bertini's is good, too. :)

JPC doesn't ship to India. >:(
Sure they do. (http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/home/static/-/lang/en/currency/EUR/page/porto) :)
"Conditions of dispatch other Countries: India 24.99 EUR"
But at that (flat) shipping rate I'd order some more items!
Q
Looks like they don't update their site to reflect their policies, either. ;D I once (a few months ago, perhaps) e-mailed them regarding something I found in their site and they told me that they had stopped shipping things here due to certain issues they had had with credit cards. :(
I'm worried. I embark on this with some trepidation, because I have this niggling feeling that when I post my bargains, everybody will snigger behind their CD stacks and then say 'OK, those... yeah, well, yeah, they're so obvious that we didn't mention them'. And so I'll sneak away quietly to sob behind my CD stacks; and then one of you, a bit more kind-hearted than most, will shuffle across and say 'It's OK, old chap, really. We've all done this sort of witless thing. Don't worry about it.' And I'll almost believe it, until I hear another barely suppressed snigger, which erupts into a guffaw, whereupon I'll jump up and stamp my feet and shout 'Look here, they were as cheap as chips and so I call 'em bargains!'
You see the problem?
Ha! I welcome another interested reader (and hopefully contributor) to the French Baroque thread (http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php/topic,1729.0.html) and the other Baroque threads! :)
Oh, that sucks! :o :-\

Not sure if folk here are aware of the Handel half-price sale at Hyperion? Their box sets (mostly 2CDs) of Handel are available post free at half price, plus an extra 10% discount if you spend more than £20. (And even more discount if you keep on buying - which I didn't, since I thought I'd quite like to eat again before the end of the month).
When I stumbled across their sale today, I helped myself to the following, for a total of about £24:

Anyone in Chicago should go check out the CSO Symphony Store. They're sadly going out of business as the rents in the building they occupy have gone through the roof, so all their stock is on sale at 30% off and more. There are some real gems that can only be found there, e.g. various CSO "from the Archives" sets of live performances, including, e.g., one with a riveting Janacek Glagolitic Mass conducted by Boulez or a Kubelik set that includes the Tristan Liebestod.

Not sure if £2.80 per disc is Super-Duper cheap, forgive me if not.
If it is cheap enough, then you should consider these box sets.

Featuring their famous and now deleted recording of the so-called "Earthquake" mass by Antoine Brumel, this 15 CDs boxset includes some of the most prestigious recordings available on the Sony Classical VIVARTE label and sheds light on this long-forgotten music that too often seems to lie in dark corners of European archives and libraries.
Paul van Nevel, choirmaster, musicologist, and cultural historian founded the Huelgas Ensemble in the early 1970's at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. The Ensemble has emerged as one of Europe's main vocal ensembles dedicated to the performance of music from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Van Nevel has won a number of prestigious awards for his recordings with the Huelgas Ensemble. Their recording of the music of Renaissance composer Mattheus Pipelare, Pipelare: Missa "L'homme armé" , won the 1998 Cannes Classical Award for Best Choral Music, in addition to the Diapason d'or in 1996. Previous albums, including their critically acclaimed Utopia Triumphans, have accumulated similar accolades. Van Nevel has also been awarded the "Prix In Honorem" from the Académie Charles Cros in Paris.
Tracks:
CD 1 Codex Las Huelgas - Music from 13th Century Spain
CD 2 Febus Avant! ,Music at the Court of Gaston Febus (1331-1391)

Erato,Nix, I have the Brumel since ten years, and that's amazing. Several other discs in it have been on my wishlist for years, so of course it is on order. But with such a varied repertoire, I guess a simple answer will be difficult, even though I expect the usual van Nevel quality.
Do you have the set? If so, how do you like it so far?

Since this thread is ultimately about saving money, please feel free to warn us against purchasing any specific sets that you consider 'turkeys'.
Well, if you want to be talked out of it--but into something else :)--consider this complete Brahms edition from DG, which can be had cheaply if you hunt around:

I absolutely agree, I've had my eye on it since it came out. I see that it's included in the box set promotion that Hyperion are carrying out for the month of November - 20% off their largest box sets, all the bulk buying discounts still apply & free delivery (at least in the UK) :

I'm mulling over the 40 CD Schubert song set as we speak :-\
.....But since Brian seemed anxious for someone to splash him with some cold water I felt obliged to give it a try...what he does with my two cents is up to him... :)
(not to mention the warm glow you get from directly supporting an independent record label :))
I'm not sure about the Super-Duperness of this bargain, but I'm surely very happy with the appearance of this box (five cd's for the price of two!).
And what a Beethoven-cycle this is! A must-have, a must-listen, a must-admire, as far as I'm concerned.

Well at Presto I see the Schubert set for £140. It's listed as £144 on Hyperion's own site, but factor in the 25% discount for orders over £60 and it works out at £108. I don't see the Golden Age / Harry Christophers set listed on Presto either.
(not to mention the warm glow you get from directly supporting an independent record label :))
My guess? He'll apply it to the S & H..... :D
8)
Run, don't walk. If you're a Schubert fan, that is every bit as much of a steal as Brilliant Classics' boxes - it's simply not being given away, and nor should it be :)

I bought the Hyperion Schubert Lieder series individually, at probably over three times that cost. I also bought 7 or so of the Schumann set, and they've finsihed at 11, so I guess I'll get those remaining ones and compete that set - at full price as well.

Hi Tony
Ordered the DG Friday evening as well (2 left at the time prior to my order) - got the automated confirmation of order, but no advice of despatch so far.
and thanks to Ammar for the heads up as well ! :D
Ah, wait until you get to the chamber music, Clarinet Quintet, the two Cello sonatas....the Sextet! Bliss.

I've never heard any of Handel's cantatas so I picked one up. Can't go wrong for the price of a coffee. :D
Ammar,
Many thanks for the "Heads up" on this Brahms set. Brahms is a composer, bar his big works and chamber music, well he is a composer whom I have very little music. 60cds for 20 Euro's is amazing. I ordered it on Friday morning and it came from France today (Monday morning) to the UK. First class service.
I also ordered the DG box set for £18, not sure if this one will surface.
Anyone got this at the bargain price...do keep us informed.
Anyone got this at the bargain price...do keep us informed.
Re the Brahms DG box, got two emails late this afternoon :
- Amazon UK confirming despatch of the Brahms box from the reseller
- the Reseller also confirming despatch
I have just arrived home from work and checked my email and lo and behold email #1 tells me of Bellini and the other #2 tells me of Brahms.
Got a reply from the supplier - Looks I'll be getting the Norma :-\ ... the Brahms DG box is not an item they list and they claim it is an incorrect listing under that number at Amazon... I am given the possibility to return the CD freepost when i get it for refund.... damn..
Well, a package arrived for me in the post today and sure enough...
* It's Bellini's Norma conducted by Levine on DG >:( *
I contacted Findprice and was told that, according to their records, 'this was the item that I ordered' >:( >:(
Anyway, I've sent it back (cellophane intact) to their returns department and they're happy to refund it (I tried pushing for a replacement Brahms set but, surprisingly enough, they don't have any in stock). Was it too good to be true?
....
Olivier - Norma is a classic Bel Canto (can belto? ;) ) opera, well worth acquiring even for non-opera buffs, but you can pick up one of Callas' legendary recordings for around half the price of the Levine set. I'm not even sure if a libretto is included in the DG box, I was in such a hurry to repackage it and send it back that I forgot to check!

I got that set brand new for 60 USD ;DIn 20 years all mobile phones will come loaded with lossless copies of all classical music - ever - for a few dollars. OK; I exaggerate, but your market will be very small, and prices will be rock bottom. Maybe you will be able to find somebody rich and desperate for physical emdia, but I doubt it. The best reason to buy some of these sets, are that we may be the last generation that wants them and in a few years they will therefore not be available.
Not that I have cracked it open yet. That seems to be the problem with these mega sets, I have a bunch of them and none of them I have listened to. Maybe 20 years from now when they are really OOP I can ebay them and sell them for a nifty profit.
I got that set brand new for 60 USD ;D

The word in bold alone would have been enough to instantly and decidedly dissuade me, even if I didn't already own the DG version.Depends upon the source of course. The Bach Walcha mono set was fine, the Smetana set includes som really horrible things, like radio broadcasts taped upon what sounds like home recorders from a badly tuned radio set. Cheap, but be very sceptical.
'Documents' issues have the worst - repeat, the worst - sound I have ever heard for historical recordings of any age.
And that's including the Beethoven 5th by Nikisch (1913). Don't do this to yourself. :P

My theory is that they pirate other people's pirate transfers and then improve/ruin them with their own remastering.
Depends upon the source of course.
This is very true. A pirate can only be as good as the source they're stealing from. If they're smart enough to leave the original source alone sometimes - sometimes - the sound can be OK. I'm thinking particularly of that brownish-gray Documents box (one of two volumes) devoted to Michelangeli. The SOURCE had good sound to begin with (Aura/Ermitage - pirates in their own right - from Italian Radio) and apparently Documents simply did a straight transfer and everything turned out fine. Not that this is the norm by any stretch. But sometimes - sometimes - you get lucky.
Though not often. :P

I think the reason they remaster the CDs is to disguise the source that they are stealing from.So that means that they are smarter than Hatto's husband?

I thought that he did try to disguise his forgeries?Yes but he didn't succed. No revelations about Document's eventual scam as of yet anyway.
I do not know the legal status of the recordings re-released by Documents, but in almost every legal system it is a calumny to impute “theft” or “robbery” to somebody if you do not have proofs to support your sayings. Besides, it is necessary to recall that some old recordings can be in the public domain; therefore, it does not exist something like theft, when you use those recordings. I do not know if it is the case with Documents. Finally, I am not a fan of historical recordings, but I have the Walcha’s set on Documents and, I must say, it is -even sonically- an excellent box set. :)
Have you read about the Brazilian government wanted to manufacture drugs whose patents are owned by US pharmaceutical companies? I was outraged when I read such news. How about piracy in China where 90% of its PC's run illegal copies of MS OS only a few years ago ...
Finally, I am not a fan of historical recordings, but I have the Walcha’s set on Documents and, I must say, it is -even sonically- an excellent box set. :)
There really isn't such a thing as an inherently bad recording, strictly speaking.
You obviously aren't a fan of the Kinks or Procol Harum. ;)
Looks like the end of an era. I checked the Hyperion 'Please Buy me' sale today, popped something into my basket and went to the checkout - to discover that, instead of the usual free postage, a whopping great £4.40 postage was added to the total. Which is understandable of course, except that it pretty well eliminates the whole bargain deal, really, unless you're buying lots of CDs. (Alas, usually there's a maximum of one in the bargain dump that I want). So that brings to an end my regular monitoring of the website every 2 or 3 days. It was good while it lasted! Then you might as well buy them on mdt which charges 8.30 VATfree pounds, with P&P it comes to about the same and you can buy what you want not restricted to the few discs on offer. Something strange happende on hyperion's site; the previous offer was on for about 1 day, then it went down for nearly a day for maintenance and now this. I'm holding my breath and hoping this is a snafu..., certainly they will soon discover that they might as well drop the offer on the current terms.

Yep, piracy exists, everybody knows that, no? But as any other crime, it must be proved. Mere unfounded suspicions or assertions are not enough.

What's your opinion on this label? It has some very good recordings on budget price.
For example, Helmut Walcha playing Bach's music for organ (10CD's). Is it the same recording as the one by Archiv music? Any differences maybe on the quality of the sound?
Also Karajan conducting Bach's Mass in B minor (1952). That recording is also availiable by EMI.
The Walcha set is the Archiv mono recordings from 1947-52. With a tad ambience tastefully added. A real bargain.
Available in Norway for 13 USD. Of course I've bought it some time ago.
Probably transfers from LP, which is legal because the recordings are out of copyright (in Europe).
Can't imagine that DG licensed and gave access to the original recordings.
Q
Piracy is like illicit drugs, they have a market ONLY because there are consumers. I have never owned any pirated CD's or DVD's.
Are you sure? I just tested it and it's still free. Maybe try again? ???
You're right! I just went ahead and completed my purchase, post-free. Thanks for pointing this out.Not much of interest there just now, unfortunately. I planned on buying Hamelin's Villa-Lobos disc, but that list was withdrawn after about one day, due to the maintenance I mentioned. What I'm really following is the series of Schumann's songs (where I've secured two volumes so far)....
It looks as though I must have visited the site when some maintenance was going on - or maybe they hadn't restored the site correctly, as erato suggests above. Anyway, it's now back to bargain business as usual.
It is really hard to try to follow any logical argumentation with you Coop. You only seem interested in your usual sweeping generalizations, without any specific relation with the discussed issues. ::)

Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me. Or they're just inept with little of the state-of-the-art equipment needed to do an adequate job. Probably lots of variables...
What logical explanation is needed on this issue of piracy? It is a no-brainer and an economic issue. There is piracy in the US too but it is not as rampant as in the so-called third-world countries. Perhaps my statement was offensive to some of you who live outside western Europe or the US?
Do you really understand anything about the last posts? This discussion was about Walcha’s set on Documents (10 CDs), which it is sold in all major stores of the world and distributed by Membran Records, a German label.
Wrong again. Apparently you can not search by yourself, but if you read replies 273, 275, 276, 278, 279, 280, 281 and 284 on this thread, you will see that all of them are about Documents as a supposed pirate label.
Listen, I have better ways to waste my time than being the unpaid GMG archivist to search through voluminous posts to determine if I own a pirate copy of ONE recording...
Yes, I know. You waste your time preparing your informative posts: Now playing CD5 of this set, now playing CD42 of this set and so ad nauseam.
There are only one or two people on the forum whose opinions I value and you are not one of them and I will not divulge the identity of those individuals either...
There are only one or two people on the forum whose opinions I value and you are not one of them and I will not divulge the identity of those individuals either. All I care to get out from this forum is what I might have overlooked in terms of potentially good recordings. I do not care to read any detailed reviews from anyone, period.
I hope the shocking weather, at least here, has succeeded in cooling the wider atmosphere and I take pleasure in now unlocking the thread.

It seems like they've added extensive download options that weren't there before?
Yes, the Prateroius disc (not Michael) is slightly tempting.
There's yet another new batch on offer at Hyperion now, by the way.
Harry, We have had several adverse comments about the number of stickies at the top of the rooms. We decided not to increase the number. If it remains a popular thread, it will keep rising to the top.

That looked so tempting, Harry, that I dived in head first ... but I'd never used JPC before, and it took me so long to get through the maze of creating an account, with some information being given in English, some in German (with confirmatory emails being sent in German so I couldn't understand them); and then having created this account, I wasn't at all convinced that my address was recorded correctly, since their system seemed to put everything in a strange order. Finally I was anticipating so many potential translational problems in the future if something wasn't right, that it simply didn't seem worth the bother in order to save a bit of money. So I chose not to complete the purchase after all, and sent a message asking them to delete my newly created account instead. I feel curiously deflated as a result!
10€ vs $72US over here.
Actually, that was forty minutes ago that you posted that, so it's around $87 now. ;)

Uhuh, and still 9,99 in Europe, it did not change in four days, and I tell you what, be quick about it, otherwise its sold out, and the recording is fantastic..... ;D You would not want to miss out on this one. Its a gem to listeners with HIP hearts. ;)

Kissin has always been criticized as providing inconsistent performances throughout his career. But at $5 a disc, there is not a whole lot to lose ...
You mean $1.62 per disc?
:D :P
If this isn't a bargain I don't know what is!

Well, thanks to Harry's encouragement and the help and patience of the people at jpc, I finally managed to get myself registered correctly on their website, and I've just been notified that the box is now on its way to me. (It seems still to be available, too, at this crazy price.)
Thanks Harry.

10 cds for 9 dollars used and 12 dollars new.
Unfortunately, it's probably a very mediocre set, but it's a good introduction to Chopin, especially as it features recordings by different pianists, such as Rubinstein, Horowitz, Cortot, Arrau, Michelangeli, Gilels, Solomon, Backhaus, etc. Another plus of this set, it covers the complete PCs, scherzi, ballades, waltzes, mazurkas, and etudes (op. 10, 25), which is often hard to find.
Doesn't really tempt me, but if you don't have any Chopin in your collection, i suggest you to take a glance this way...
Also a good introduction to Chopin would be this set (http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000026OW3/ref=sr_1_olp_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1259827028&sr=1-1&condition=new). Apart from the etudes, this contains, to my knowledge, every other solo work, and the piano concerti. :)
The reason I mentioned the set above as a better reference/starter is because many people just won't warm to Rubinstein's "natural" Chopin and never will. A more comprehensive set can give you a better feel of which pianists you enjoy and which you do not.
I think it is wise to go for the piecemeal approach when it comes to Chopin, for I don't think any pianist plays all of Chopin's works well or perhaps better to say, to one's taste. Some are only great with the etudes, others excel with the Ballades but not with the Nocturnes and vice versa. Some, like Moravec, Rosenthal, Pachmann, to name a few, didn't record nearly all of Chopin's output anyway. Many of the great Chopin CDs are available at midprice (Ashkenazy's Decca Two-fers, Gavrilov's Etudes on Seraphim, Arrau's Nocturnes, etc) or lower, so it's possible to assemble a reasonably priced personalized box set of individual CDs.
I just love Chopin piano works ... ;D
Me too. As time goes on, I have become more and more fond of them.
Me too. As time goes on, I have become more and more fond of them.Chopin has gone from being a nonentity in my listening ten years ago to being quite important currently. And that after 35 years in classical music!
I am particularly fond of the Nocturnes. Unfortunately, those singles by Cortot on Naxos Historical I bought last spring really do not cover the whole work. Did Cortot ever record the complete Nocturnes, George? Or are they only available on EMI, whose sound may not be quite as good as Naxos Historical?

Some big names in there, but none that I call my favorites for Chopin. Plus, they left out Cortot. :-[
If that doesn't qualify for this thread, at that price, I really don't know what should. :oSome strange choices of works though:
Elusive complete track listing here (http://www.allegro.pl/item845093751_a_festival_of_ballet_50cd.html)!
Hehe. Certainly a weird choice to include an obscure British composer for the German market, but for people with taste, Job is a masterwork ;)I do know Job, but the Enigmas in a ballet box? I don't doubt that someone, somewhere, have danced to it, but still?
Although based on EMI's recent quality control history, they probably have a student on work experience overseeing the whole project.

I would totally volunteer to be the student on work experience choosing box set program lineups!!

Would make for a good catch-phrase around the EMI offices, for the multiple-disc box set specialist.

Not to mention the fact that he'd have to beat off (perhaps not the best choice of words, but I am tired) the ladies with one of those ICON boxes. ;D
Sony is late to the big box party when DG and EMI have been doing just that for the past two years. No wonder Sony has been performing like crap the past ten years. While Sony took the world by storm with its Walkman and Discman, it missed the MP3 boat big-time.
Yes, his would be a hard life. :'( ;)
Yes, his would be a hard life. :'( ;)
Indeed! Relevant to your comment, I owned one of their early attempts at a modern mp3 player, and it was a complete disaster of a machine, badly written software, unintuitive interface... Even the PS3 took them a couple of years to get right, in terms of presenting a cohesive vision of what they want people to do with one, and pricing it at the right level.
So I'm not surprised their classical division has also been having trouble keeping up with the times in the new world of high disc-to-price ratios and extensive archival reissues; let alone presenting innovation of their own.

The complete Haydn piano sonatas - MP3 download for $10 (http://www.arkivmusic.com/albumpage/207526-E625-5)[/b]Downloading now - 1.3 GB downloaded, 200 megabytes left to go, probably the biggest download I've ever done! Still and all, for $10 to have the complete Haydn sonatas, well, I'm a little bit excited. :)
Is anyone familiar with EMI's 50-disc Schubert Collector's Edition? I don't have any Schubert yet and was thinking of purchasing this. It's under $70 a couple places.

Looks like the file transfer process will be complete pretty near the four-hour mark :o
EDIT: Finished at 4 h 14 m. Pretty good given the length of the album is 10 h 57 m!
Brian, Were you using a 1 TB external hard drive for this download? I have seen prices for such drive for a little over $100 on sale ...
Nope, my regular hard drive had room! I do need to invest in a 1 TB external, however; have seen them for as cheap as $90, and with my current external full, it's a pressing need. :)

No way, Jose. If you are to resist the dark side, it must be done on your own. :DThe Force is weak in him.
Delivery to the UK is 10 euros, the website is entirely in French with no option to translate (L'Académie française would be proud), so only proceed if your French is, er, bon. :)
I assume it's a flat rate. And could you please tell me how much they charge to ship things to India -- if they ship to India at all? :) I'm sorry to trouble you, but my French is not the least bon. :)
Their international shipping rates depend on the items ordered and are calculated thus: 9,90 euros for 1-3 items, 18,30 euros for 4-7 items, 28,20 euros for 8-15 items and free shipping for ordering more than 15 items. Shipping charges are calculated automatically on the order page, so you'll be able to check them out before finalizing the order - and in your case they're also going to exclude the sales tax from the item's price (about 17% if I remember correctly).
That information is very much appreicated, Tasos. :)
(And like I feared, their rates seem to be rather reasonable. :-\)
I didn't manage to find any list of excluded countries (à la amazon marketplace) on their help pages, so these rates do apply internationally. If these bix Brilliant boxes are considered as singular items for the purpose of calculating the delivery charges, it's a good deal. Now that I think of it, it will cost less to send an item to India (same p&p, but tax-free) than to send it to Greece! :o ;D

Buchberger Haydn is 20 euros.
Man, I was planning not to buy any CDs this year ...
Wanderer & Opus106,
I partially processed an order with my country flagged as India; Abeille's system seemed to accept it without any problems. Postage to India starts at 8.28 euros - I'm guessing it's cheaper than for the UK & Greece because the local sales tax is removed (also reflected in the reduced prices shown on the Abeille website for CDs when I changed my address). Of course, we don't then need to worry about any import taxes...
Now, I'm going to be useful to everybody else and recommend y'all buy the 5CD Sviatoslav Richter set. It's 8 euros and it contains some of the most stupendous Schubert and Beethoven playing there is.

Picked this new release up for $55 (56 discs).
As if we need further proof of EMI's incompetence, there is no listing or hint of the existence of this set on EMI classics own web site (that I can find) although various amazon sites are selling it and one has already been shipped to me. No track listing has been made available either, although I have a general idea of what Ciccolini recorded for EMI.
How can a company that can't even manage to maintain a list of the products it sells survive?
http://www.emivirginclassics.fr/aldo-ciccolini-the-complete-emi-recordings/
Good work, finding it on the French EMI site. I was wondering if I missed it, but I still can't find it in the catalog or new release pages of the international site, www.emiclassics.com.
French Sony released my box of Szell LvB symphonies. Shh... 8)

Explain to me please! I'd like to pick Szell/Beethoven box at a reasonable price...
I see those CDs (singly) in the used bins for $3.99 all the time.
And almost all of them are available at AMP for the same price, new. Of course, you'd have to pay almost as much for shipping. And that would be the same as buying from Amazon while taking advantage of the free shipping if eligible. Not bad for OOP CDs that one very much wants, I'd say. :)
Sorry. This was a while back. I think it's oop by now.
That French site has some ridiculously cheap stuff aside from Brilliant Classics. Many full-priced Chandos CDs are going for 6.40, including cool stuff like their D'Indy, Koechlin, the recent Bacewicz violin concertos disc, etc. If the shipping was flat-rate I would've bought a crate load.
This is one of the first times I've ever felt jealous of the French :'(
How much is the shipping cost if I live in the US?
(The shipping cost is what I don't like about foreign "bargains.")

Wow! I guess I'll wait a couple days - my cart [Beethoven, Rachmaninov, historical Russians edition] just went from US $107 to US $88! NOTE: You have to delete everything from your cart and re-add them to get the new price.
The Buchberger Haydn complete box set is now US $24.
Did you mean Buchbinder? I have his Complete Haydn Piano Sonatas on WarnerClassics.
You just made me order 251 CDs from this site for the grand total of 65 E including P&P. I included a Chandos disc (Rubbras masses) at at ridiculous price, unfortunately I already have the "D'Indy (2) and Bacewicz violin concertos disc" mentioned by somebody, but which Koechlin disc did you think of?Charles Koechlin Intégrale des œuvres pour saxophone & piano (http://classique.abeillemusique.com/CD/Classique/CHAN9803/0095115980323/Chandos-Records/Charles-Koechlin/Integrale-des-oeuvres-pour-saxophone--piano/cleart-22191.html)

Let me guess... the Haydn Box and the Russian Legends? For me, it comes to a whopping 53,18 €. That is ridiculous! (In a good way. ;D)Righto. Wanted the barytone trios and the van Swieten Piano trios, the rest is pure bonus. And I have 30 CDs worth of the russian material, those will make great presents.
Edit: actually, 61.45. Still ridiculous, though.

Currently now 6 euro rather than 6.40.
Can anyone provide an 'idiots guide' instructions as to set up an account at Abeille Musique. It's very hard being a Luddite and speaking only one language.
I get the bit about 'add to basket', then realize its saying something about 'not having an account'
:-[ No worries if you can't, I may try the English speaking telephone service...cheers

The first time I ordered from Abeille Musique, I used Google Translate to translate key phrases.
Just don't click the button that says: "Please Use My Credit Card As You Will".
I should have paid more attention in French class...
Me too. :(
My cart is full of nice and cheap goodies, but I don't know how to buy with my credit card. Some help?
:)
Sure, just PM me the number.

When will I listen to it all?
Hmmm ... $150 buys me the complete works of Beethoven, Rachmaninov, and Grieg, the complete Haydn quartets, the Mravinsky edition, and the giant Russian Archives collection. 285 CDs, 53 cents per CD. All for the price of 10 dinners at the local Mexican restaurant. Every reason to buy it.
Except:
When will I listen to it all?
The Langgaard set isn't on 12 CDs. I think it's on 6. Great price anyway though.
Langaard - Symphonies - Da Capo - 12 SACDs = 28 euros
How are the points used when you make a purchase? I'm probably not looking in the right spot (or not understanding).
You can't use them right away; you can cash them out when placing a subsequent order. The points you already have and the sum they amount to are calculated automatically on the ordering page.
How many points do you have to get before it makes a difference? I placed a 28 euro order there last year (Complete Brahms / Brilliant) and don't seem to have any points being applied to my total. The points appear in the confirming e-mail you receive. I seem to remember I got 8 points, whatever that's worth, for mye 60 Euro, 251 disc, purchase.

The sculptor is a genius - he's managed to make Brahms look Mongolian.

Like many, I've been tempted by some of the deals on the site at classique.abeillemusique.com, but in the end I resisted all of the enormous 100+ CD Brilliant Classics Boxes. I just can't imagine listening to so much music.I well understand that feeling. But I had been wanting the Haydn Baritone trios on Brilliant, as well as eyeing their Haydn Piano trios as a HIP alternative to my Beaux Art set. When I could get the whole 150 disc extravaganza for less than what the barytone set would cost me, I saw no reason to abstain, however much there is at least 60 discs in the set that doesn't interest me at all, and quite a bit more than that probably never will be played. Silly really, but such are the vagrancies of the marketplace.
Paying more for them seperately seems to make me value them better.
I have a similar problem with the Haydn box. I'm buying the component parts of that box for much more than it would cost to get them in the integral - the symphonies, quartets, keyboard trios and barytone trios. Paying more for them seperately seems to make me value them better.
My order was placed January 24 (Monday 1am, French time); as an American I don't expect to receive it for a while, but it hasn't shipped yet, either.
One of mine arrived today. The packaging was odd - it was sellotaped up with Naxos.com branded tape ???
But the content was right and undamaged right? SarahYep, all the discs also had plastic wrapping.

How long does it take those Frenchies to ship? I ordered last week but no shipping notice yet.
They shipped in two working days for me, via DHL. Maybe US orders are more tricky.
My order was in on Thursday. Anti-American discrimination is what it is!!! (Pass the freedom fries.) >:(
You should've thought of that before that independence business. 8)
Are you kidding, if it weren't for the revolution we'd still be under horrible tyranny (like Canada ???).
I make this post with some trepidation. Is this a bargain?
Box set offered for sale, for 14.99 euros, at jpc here:
http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/Wolfgang-Amadeus-Mozart-21-Klavierkonzerte/hnum/6348294 (http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/Wolfgang-Amadeus-Mozart-21-Klavierkonzerte/hnum/6348294)
I wanted a non-HIP set of Mozart piano concertos so that I could make comparisons with my Sofronitzki fortepiano HIP set, and while I can't find much review information about this Annerose Schmidt/Kurt Masur set, I get the impression that it's not outstanding, but respectable. Anyway, for my present purposes it seemed like a bargain, so I'm posting this info here in case it's of use to anyone else.
Here's another set for your consideration.
http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/Wolfgang-Amadeus-Mozart-23-Klavierkonzerte/hnum/7547854
It's not quite complete, but it's certainly well known and received.
Marriner would put me off from it, but that's a very good price indeed. Hmm.
Opus106 seems to have uncovered a gem. I was not aware the Brendel set was now so affordable. Brendel turns out gold in Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, and Marriner and his band tend to make good accompanists.
If you can find it, this one can't be beat. Both orchestra and piano handled with pluck.
Piano and orchestra both pizzicato?

I thought I'd thoroughly scoured jpc's special deals but I certainly missed that. (Am I the only one who finds the jpc search facility curiously unwieldy?) Thanks for this tip Navneeth. I must say, had I known about this, I'd have jumped at the chance of getting Brendel at such a price, and I'm now wondering whether to get one anyway. (This way madness lies, doesn't it?)
Your worries about the Masur set are a good way to look at things - screw anything other than excellence in such widely-recorded repertoire, it's a waste of money no matter how much it costs.
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51px0eG57lL._SL500_AA240_.jpg) (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/517rmpXVhoL._SS500_.jpg)
Take your pick of mega ballet boxes:
35 CD Decca $60 new Amazon seller Blowitoutahere
50 CD EMI $60 new Amazon seller Blowitoutahere
I give slight edge in quality to EMI because I like Lanchbery's performances for EMI, plus price is cheaper per CD........I did buy the EMI box BTW, love my main man Blowitoutahere ;)
Check this huge list of contents for EMI box:
http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album.jsp?album_id=312634 (http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album.jsp?album_id=312634)
But another question, has the Decca set the complete ballets, for I remember vaguely that it is also a excerpts release.
I had the same question, but Amazon has this as download as well (so we can see all the tracks). I compared the Giselle and Delibes discs (all of which I have complete with the same artists) and they match. So the Deccas seems to have complete versions (not including the excerpts).
On the Arkiv site, for many of the ballets, it says excerpts. If these are not the full ballets, it makes the EMI pretty uncompetitive (if you want the full ballets anyway). Have you gotten it yet to be able to determine this?
So that will be the box to go for, well lets see if Abeille has it cheap, for JPC sells it at 58 euro's, a little steep for some very old recordings.
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51D47b6gPML._SL500_AA240_.jpg) (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51px0eG57lL._SL500_AA240_.jpg)
For people who want to be more complete......
If you can find the Fete Du Ballet box of ballet rarities for good price there is little overlap with 35CD Decca box and you would have just about everything a ballet fan would need......
That box with 10 cd's is not to be had under 60 euro's :P
At a discounted price of $55.64: http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/Decca/4685782 . :)
On the ballet boxes, are they excerpts from the ballets or the full scores?
ETA: Saw the info on an earlier page - excerpts.
Got this one, 5 cds, for 6.73 pounds, plus 3 pounds shipping. A few days ago got Gary Cooper's WTC on ASV for 3.99 pounds.

I am also keeping my eye on that very seller, for that very item. [Elgar/Andrew Davis set]For what it's worth, I think there are some fine performances in that box, though it's perhaps a bit uneven. I listened to it for the first time in a little cottage tucked into the side of the Malvern Hills, and wasn't disappointed by anything that I heard. His Enigma and Cockaigne are particularly good, and although I seem to recall that Penguin Guide thought little of his 1st symphony, I find it very satisfying. Seeing this exposure of it here inclines me to blow the dust off it and spin the discs again.
Do let us know how it turns out; I'm a little worried by just how good an offer this is for a new copy, even from 'overstock'...
It's not Christmas' time, but this is perhaps a valuable offer

Just to let you know the Bvhaast site is having a great sale. Many things are 5 EU and 2.50 EU. I got a few things that were over $40 on Amazon! Check it out!

Some bargains to be had today, but you'll have to work for them...
One of Amazon.co.uk's major marketplace sellers, Zoverstocks, has a number of classical CDs reduced to £2.98. Now, I know they're all listed as used but, having had numerous dealings with them, I'd say that 80% of their used CDs are 'as new', and the remaining 20% show very minor signs of use. Through my great powers of deduction, I'm guessing that they resell stock returned from major UK retailers (a la Entertainment UK's old Amazon.co.uk presence, Directoffers - EUK was the distribution arm of the 'dearly departed' Woolworths store, FYI).
So...
Go here - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/browse.html?node=125553011
Do a search for the label you're interested in, sort price from low to high, get to the £2.98 mark and hopefully there will be something of interest. Try Hyperion first and you'll see what I mean.
(Best bet is to stick to the independents; I've just ordered a bundle (what is the proper collective term for CDs?) of Hyperion, Bis and Coro CDs)
Happy hunting ;D
They have several volumes of Jeno Jando's Beethoven piano sonatas available for as low as £0.01! At that price, I find them hard to resist.
But...what will shipping to America cost?
Carlos Kleiber's DG recordings have been boxed; 12 CDs for 35 Euro. (http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B003GRW6TM/ref=s9_simh_gw_p15_i1?pf_rd_m=A3JWKAKR8XB7XF&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1BBG7F90BKX0JBSZ5TGF&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=463375173&pf_rd_i=301128)

Too bad I have all the orchestral works sans the Schubert 3rd, and I'm not interested in [the] operaright now. DG have also released a 10-DVD set with live performances including two years of the of VPO New Year's Concert.
No matter. Karajan is still the god of classical music in Japan and the Japanese will buy these special editions with both hands ...
Not they won't

That's all the info for now.
Thanks. Some of the names involved in the performances:
Kussmaul, Hengelbrock, Schornsheim, Belder, Lubotsy, ter Linden,
Preston, Pinnock, Savall, Lindberg, Fagius, Zomer, Huggett,
Berben,Wuyts,Holton,Meel,Holland Boy Choir,Mathis,Wentz,
Belder,La Stravaganza,Kirkby,Hill,Agnew,Chance,Brandenburg
Consort,The Sixteen,Christophers,Netherlands Bach
I don't know if all of them were part of the earlier box. I wonder if the recording of 1080 included in the set is the one by Hill (for Hänssler).
It must be Martyn Hill, the English tenor!
So no new names, as far as I am concerned.

J.S. Bach: Complete Edition (CD - 157 discs) $159.49
What I'd like is the cheapest decent recording of the complete Bach Cantatas. I think I will probably find most of it less than riveting, but I'd like to have it. Brilliant has a set, but I seem to recall it being panned by most people.
Just ordered for € 26... ;)From whom, please?

jpc.de had it for 20 € last I checked.Wow...thanks! I'll look into it!
Nice find, Alan, and thanks for sharing the source. Solti's Ring deserves all the praise it's received over the years, making the best case I've heard for Wagner's epic.Nice to see you back, Dave. All I want now is a cheap Goodall (English) Ring, and I'll be a happy Wagnerian. I was one of the privileged audience who attended English National Opera's Twilight of the Gods with Rita Hunter in Manchester, back in about 1974/5. We sweltered in the heat, hour after hour, while she transformed herself into an unforgettable Brunnhilde before our eyes. I remember the applause going on and on, afterwards, until our hands hurt and our arms ached.
Holy crap! I found 20 CDs adding up to 20 pounds' worth of goods, but the shipping charge is 58 quid - adding up to $123 US dollars for a bunch of overstocked old Naxos CDs! No way. If only I were in England :-/
There's a bunch of new EMI Icons on the way, Fischer, Fournier, Kempe, Larrocha and Wunderlich IIRC.
Edwin or Annie?
Fournier,
But...but...the Bach and Dvorak are on DG!Maybe they stole it and that's why it is cheap. Or you can take it up with DG and see the price skyroceket.

I don't know if all of them were part of the earlier box.
I have to correct my former statement about new recordings in the new Brilliant Bach box.
Leon Berben´s horrible WTC has been replaced by Pieter-Jan Belder´s WTC, - a great improvement.
The Violin concertos by Emmy Verhey have been replaced by recordings by Dimitri Sitkovetsky - not necessarily an improvement.
Stephen Preston´s Flute sonatas have been replaced by the Flute sonatas by Jan Wentz, and furthermore I suspect that Wentz´s Musicalsches Opfer also is included in the new release, - certainly a reduction in value IMO.
Is the recording of the flute sonatas the two of you are referring to the same as the one available from CRD -- Pinnock, Preston and Savall?
I was, in fact, recently looking around the web for recordings of these works (seeing how much I love what Bach has done with the oboe and flute in his cantatas and such), but sadly, I could not find not many (HIPPI recordings).
I would avoid the aforementioned Jed Wentz; he is a virtuoso, but his tempi and general style in these works are totally unjustified. :)
I beg your pardon, but I do not agree with this rather hard statement. Where is it written that it should be played in a certain style and tempi.
We could hardly ask Bach now could we?
I think Jed Wentz is a excellent choice in these works. :)
Thanks, Antoine.
You're welcome, Navneeth. For some reason, I forgot another of my favourite versions:
Really, an exceptional disc. :)
So, essentially, everything except the Wentz? ;D
Not really. For example, I wouldn't either recommend Pahud/Pinnock or Nicolet/Richter, among the versions that I have.
I was just kidding. :)
... I just sampled the first allegro from 1080..
:o
If I remember correctly, the last time you posted one of these, it was meant to convey amazement, in a good sort of way. Does that hold now also? ;) :)
Oh, yes. The Art of Fugue on baroque flute will always be an event in itself. :D
If you want your Bach played in gallant style, I don't have any problem at all, dear Harry… But any day I prefer Barthold Kuijken, Stephen Preston, Masahiro Arita, Marc Hantaï or Janet See -over Jed Wentz- in this repertoire. They are more consistent with the idea that many hours of listening –I know you are a dedicated listener- and some readings have left in me about how to interpret the music of Bach. Just as an exercise, tell me if the Andante of BWV 1030 really sounds like an "andante" (= walker, to walk) in your ears.
:)

So, essentially, everything except the Wentz? ;D (I just sampled the first allegro from10801079, and he is indeed fast. It's flowing nicely, but too rapidly for my tastes, given that I come from listening to CMW/Harnoncourt in this particular work.)
That would be a discussion about tempi, thats very dangerous, remembering a dispute I had with a Beethoven addict about the interpretation of tempi Zinman is using in his Beethoven. Would you forgive me, if I dare not go into a discussion about tempi? Certainly not in the open. PM me about it if you please.
Martinu's 6 symphonies recorded on Chandos - 3 CDs, something like £8.50 on Amazon at the moment. A magnificent recent purchase - I can't recommend this enough, and also cant thank the person who recommended them to me enough!
A rough dispute between us? It's not a realistic possibility, Harry. You know I appreciate and respect your opinions. :)
I grabbed that last week. An astonishing bargain. Was it a mistake by Amazon? It was odd: they had the Thomson Martinu box listed twice: for £40, and for £8 ...I decided to order the latter ;D Now, if only they make the same mistake with Thomson's RVW cycle, I'll be a happy camper.

I understood your previous reply in the way that no "new recordings", i.e., released for first time on Brilliant Classics, were included in the new big box. But, obviously, during the last years Brilliant has replaced for own releases a considerable amount of material previously licensed from another labels. I would add to your list the following discs:
- Brandenburg Concertos: Originally, Consort of London, Robert Haydon Clark (excellent). Now: Musica Amphion/ Pieter-Jan Belder.
- Orchestral Suites: Originally, Consort of London, Robert Haydon Clark. Now: La Stravaganza Köln/ Andrew Manze (licensed from Denon).
- Concerti for 2, 3 & 4 harpsichords: Originally: Schornsheim, Heiller et. al. Now: Pieter-Jan Belder, Menno van Delft, Siebe Henstra et al/ Musica Amphion.
- Cello Suites: Originally, Robert Cohen (cello). Now: Jaap ter Linden.
IMO, the only real improvement is represented for the Cello Suites by ter Linden. The Orchestral Suites licensed from Denon are also excellent, but Robert Haydon Clark and his group were very good (although on modern instruments).
All the changes you mention were included in the second version of the Bach box, so I thought they were well known and not relevant to the discussion of the third version of the box.
I don't exactly know the dates of the changes experimented for that box; I have the original edition and I have simply added the new discs. But, if you're right, it would mean that, f.i., the new Brandenburgs and the concerti for several harpsichords (Belder/ Musica Amphion) were released for the first time in the "second" big box and, just then, re-released individually in 2007. I believe it's possible because both of them were recorded at the same time in 2006 (may/june).I think these are the facts. At least I had never heard of these recordings of Belder(nor ter Linden´s second take of the Cello suites) until I acquired the second Bach box release.
Obviously, the case of the "new" flute sonatas and WTC would be rather different because they were individually released some time ago and now would be simply added to the box, which was the point of my original response to this issue. :)Point taken. :)
P.S.: the Cello Suites were also recorded in June 2006.
Allright than, you know I want to keep peace amongst us all, but since you make me comfortable, I tell you this. I think the swift tempi applied by Jed Wentz very sensible. I do not take the tempo markings by Bach as fixed at all. There is place and space for such a interpretation, like there is for David Zinman's very swift tempi. Everyone fell over him because of it, but Beethoven's own markings gave him the tools to apply it. Its all about hearing! If you can hear the inner tempi feel them, as Herbert von Karajan said, you know what the right tempi are, regardless of what is written down. When I listen to a piece I can hear if the tempi are wrong or right, it has to do with how the notes were written down. If the tempi are not right in my ears the work is ruined for me. There is not much music around that can hold its own if you lower or speed the tempi too much. I am very inadequate in explaining this but there you go, its the best I can. I trashed so many recordings in the early days, that had to do with tempi, starting with Claudio Abbado's interpretation of the Brahms Symphonies on DGG, I broke the records in several pieces, and that was the start of a long career. I do it less now though. :)
It's clear for me, Harry. You're a boy a lot wilder than I am. ;)
I trashed so many recordings in the early days, that had to do with tempi, starting with Claudio Abbado's interpretation of the Brahms Symphonies on DGG
He said he never heard me so angry and he waited until I broke the record, waited still a little after I put music from Corelli
Ah, those must be the WoO from the catalogue (http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php/topic,13.msg199020.html#msg199020). Are they Harry? ;D ;)

Please excuse me if these have already been discussed here, as I don't have time to go thru the whole thread. Getting more and more into lesser known late Romantics, I wonder if there are cheap sources for the complete or partial symphonies of Hubert Parry and Franz Schmidt, and the opera Gezeichneten (The Stigmatized) by Franz Shrecker. Any help would be appreciated.
re the SchreckerI was going to recommend this as well - superb production!
This DVD is less expensive compared to the OOP Opera Rara CD, and is listed at amazon, hbdirect and presto. The tenor is not a dwarf hunchback transvestite, though.

How does the emusic cost of "49c per song" translate into an opera or symphony?
OK, finally taken the plunge on this box set that I've been considering for a little while.
£100 inc shipping from US to UK.
£1.60 per disc probably qualifies it for super-duper cheap

I followed up this suggestion. Here is what happened, which experience I also posted today on another thread devoted specifically to emusic: The download process required some tweaking to work properly, the tech services dept. did not get around to my case for a week-and-a-half after I inquired, and in the meantime I was charged 33 song credits for an opera (Die Gezeichneten) I never was able to download. Today I called up (very difficult to find the phone number) to ask them to put the 33 credits back in my trial offer but they refused. They also refused to refund my $11.99 first month's charge, said they have a 'no refund ever' (actual quote) policy, but relented when I reacted rather strongly. I also read after searching the web for emusic complaints that they charge you $99 for a year at the 2nd month's renewal, even though they lead you to believe it is charged monthly.
Perhaps GMG members who joined emusic some time ago may not be experiencing such difficulties. With all due respect for their opinions and experiences, and no criticism intended or implied, I wish to suggest not recommending this company to GMG members who have not experienced it, without looking further into its current operations re new customers.

Too much I already have, and too much I don't want, to warrant purchase, just like in the first box. Marvellous sets for beginners, though!

I realize it is a set, but still...They have kept the original format from when these releases were on LP. I think that is a good idea and the whole point of a memorial issue like this, and as long as the price is little more than 1£ pr disc I see absolutely no problem with this, if this is the kind of thing you want musically speaking.

Yes, I think it's a ghastly idea to stick it to the consumer like this. No reason at all - commemorative issue or not - not to fill up the discs to the fullest. Most folks buying this set won't have even SEEN the original LPs anyway so the nostalgia angle makes no sense.
To me packing the CDs to the fullest would be truly commemorative!
How is it "sticking it to the consumer" when the price is so low? The cost of the disc itself is very small compared to the other costs associated with production, so if they had rearranged the material to fit on fewer discs the amount they would have had to charge to make the same profit would be only slightly less.
?No. This is a memorial issue celebrating DG 111 years, filling up the discs and charging the same price for 35 discs would simply mean that instead of copies of the glorious original covers, you would get some cheapo cardboard holders instead. Then you would be really screwed. Price and value is two distinctly different issues, as Oscar Wilde pointed out. Music is about sentiments and value, not price.
If the cost of the discs isn't the issue then FILLING THEM UP should be priority number one!!

Exactly, and the same applies to the Argerich Collection, in which the individual discs are packaged in sleeves that show the original LP cover art. It may cost a bit more to package them this way, but in the case of the Argerich edition, for example, I think it is worth it.

There isn't even a "DG" anymore!! It's all Universal. That's what makes it so sentimental.
That's what makes it so sentimental.
I suppose. But with the Giant Conglomerate® having their marketing hand in it I'm still leery. :)
What exactly are you complaining about?
It's pretty simple. Universal could've jettisoned the silly "sentiment" thing and commemorated DG'sWell.....you just been giving several reasons why that wasn't the point at all. So why do you keep harping on it? Just accept the fact that this release isn't meant for you. DG has given us tons of stuff with modern relevance over the years, like their 20/21 series. But those instead, I'm sure some of them are up to your 78 minute ideal.pastpassing by giving us something with modern relevance. Not empty space on CDs.
And anyway, 111??

What possible difference would it have made if they had squeezed that music onto a smaller number of CD and charged essentially the same price?Ah, but what if they had squeezed more music onto the same number of discs. You'd be getting a better bang for your buck (and more music to enjoy). You are right though - this release is not for us. I think we can all agree on that.
You are like a person who goes into a fancy restaurant and orders fillet mignon, then upon being served, complains that there is empty space on the plate that could have been filled with more food. What will the waiter do? Come out with the same fillet mignon on a smaller plate. :P
(But if you're still not clear about where I'm coming from simply read urkneal's last post. He gets the picture...)
Not quite a super duper bargain, perhaps, but a pretty good value nonetheless. A few Amazon.com marketplace sellers are listing Bertini's Mahler symphony cycle for under $35 --- about half of Amazon's price.

Got mine from MDT for 18 pounds, plus shipping. Quite a few of the EMI box sets can be had for astonishingly low prices if you are persistent. You don't even need to be particularly persistent. EMI is flogging everything they got that can bring cash into their vaults, in endless repackagings, in every channel they can think of. It's on my list BTW, along with the box of Muti's Cherubini.

And for no extra charge they add phony surround sound encoding, which you need to route through a dolby surround sound decoder.
I remember a similar comment was made about the sound when I posted about the sinopoli/mahler boxset in the same series a while back. I bought that set and personnally, I am happy with its sound... my ears and my setup obviously. YMMV :)I have the Schiff Bach set and have no serious problems with the sound of that. But why Universal would do a damn silly thing like this, buggers the imagination.

Plastic cases with the slipcover that says 9 CD's. But in reality, there are only 8 CD's since Symphonies Nos. 8 & 9 are combined. George and I got a great price from an Amazon US MP vendor ...

Nice. IIRC, she plays on the Opus 49 Konzertmusik conducted by the composer himself.
But the box contains no orchestral works...
Where?
Oh, OK, I notice the address you took the pic from. MDT, then?
Ah, I was too elliptical. There is a box of Hindemith conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker in his own works, including the Opus 49 Konzertmusik for piano, brass & harps. I believe Haas plays the concertante piano on that recording.

Sound is rubbish, better off with the Dante, Pearl, or Naxos transfers and paying a little extra.
Seconded, especially for the Naxos, which (of the three options) is luckily also the cheapest, best sounding and easiest way to get these performances.
I am all set with my Schnabel's Beethoven Piano Sonatas on Naxos Historical. Thanks for your recommendation, George. :)
My pleasure, glad you enjoy them.
I am now enjoying those Chopin CD's by Kemal Gekic you have also recommended, though they are nowhere close to being Super-Duper Cheap Bargains ... :P

Listening to this wonderfully inventive and forward-looking music really shows how wrong we are to categorise Hayn as a 'safe' composer. Joseph Haydn may not be neglected today, but he is certainly misunderstood.
The Aeolian's Haydn Quartet cycle was recorded in analogue sound between 1973 and 1976. Back then vinyl was still the pre-eminent playback format, and the Compact Cassette (remember that?) was merely a low-fi option for sound on the move, rather like MP3 today. The sound from the CD transfers of the Haydn is truly astonishing; there is an immediacy and body to the string sound that is rarely heard in more recent recordings, even when SACD and other miraculous technology is invoked.
Hey everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster here.Welcome! Those are some unreal prices!
I was browsing the last couple pages of this thread and was shocked to see no mention of the recent EMI box set blowout that ImportCDs had on their web site right before Thanksgiving. There were a few people over at the Steve Hoffman forum who heard about it in the classical thread, and I know a some of them post here.
Anywho, they had HUGE discounts on box sets from EMI. I'm talking like 90%+ off. Here's what I got:
$11.16 Alban Berg Quartet-Beethoven: The Complete String Quartets
$15.26 Bruckner: The Complete Symphonies by Jochum
$14.68 Maria Callas, The Complete Studio Recordings 1949-1969
$15.13 Aldo Ciccolini-Complete Emi Recordings 1950-1991
$13.93 Aldo Ciccolini-Satie: Piano Works (I found this on the site before the complete set, I'm gonna sell it)
$13.28 Composers In Person
$11.33 Elgar: The Collector's Edition
$10.96 Karajan-The Complete Emi Recordings 1946-1984, Vol. 1: Orchestral
$10.96 Karajan-The Complete Emi Recordings 1946-1984, Vol. 2: Opera & Vocal
$8.33 David Oistrakh: The Complete Recordings
$15.28 Mstislav Rostropovich: Complete Emi Recordings
$10.53 Paul Tortelier -The Great Emi Recordings
$11.13 Vaughan Williams: The Collector's Edition
Yeah, it was insane. The sale lasted about 2 days. A lot of the sets I ordered were out of stock, but they have since honored the prices and shipped everything. I just got the Callas set today.
Just a heads up to everyone to keep an eye out on their web site.
Welcome! Those are some unreal prices!
Yeah especially the orchestral Karajan, would be nice if there would have been a link, if its still available:)
The sale lasted about 2 days and has been over for about 2 weeks. The ImportCDs website is just www.importCDs.com (http://www.importCDs.com)
The sale lasted about 2 days and has been over for about 2 weeks. The ImportCDs website is just www.importCDs.com (http://www.importCDs.com)
It would have been helpful if you had posted that before the sale ended. ::)
The insane prices at which ImportCD was selling these CD sets might have something to do with the precarious financial condition of EMI, which is now doing all it can to maximize its cash flows. Back in last spring, I read an article that the private equity group that did the LBO on EMI might have to let EMI go into bankruptcy since it was in danger of violating the debt covenant with Citigroup. Perhaps ImportCD itself is in trouble as well ...
I suspect ImportCD needed to raise cash and get rid of some idle inventory. EMI may or may not be near bankruptcy, but classical music is a small part of their business and their financial position presumably depends on their pop music business more than anything else.
It would be a shame if ImportCD disappeared. Their prices are low, and tend to push everyone else's prices down, so you benefit from them even if you don't buy from them. I've gotten a fair amount of stuff from ImportCD, but they ship from California so I normally prefer similar vendors that ship from the east coast. The one time I had a problem with one of the products I got from them they were very efficient in issuing a refund.
$11.33 Elgar: The Collector's Edition
What the hell? I have been waiting for this set to get cheap for ages but it is not happening. I already own about half of the box and that's why I am unwilling to pay much for it. $43.43 on Amazon.com and £33.35 on Amazon.co.uk.

Amazon UK appears to be having a blowout sale! The massive, legendary (round these parts) Works of Igor Stravinsky 22CD box is tempting me at 18 quid (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Works-Igor-Stravinsky-22cd/dp/B000PTYUQG/ref=pd_bxgy_m_h__text_c), the Alban Berg Quartet Beethoven cycle is similarly teasing at 17 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beethoven-String-Quartets-Ludwig-van/dp/B000026D4J/ref=pd_sim_m_h__23), and Emil Gilels' EMI Icon Box (9 CDs) is about the same price (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Emil-Gilels-Icon/dp/B003D0ZNXS/ref=pd_sim_m_h__99), containing the Beethoven concerti with Szell/Cleveland, the Tchaikovsky concerti, and a couple other bits and bobs. Those prices have been regularly available om eg mdt.co.uk and others for a very long time.

Thank you so much, Rubio. I have never had things shipped directly to me from Amazon due to their shipping charges, but even with that included this comes to a grand total of $24.88, which is half of what UK-based discounts offer. :)
Ironically, I bought this box set from the UK, either MDT or Presto at an excellent price ...
Our definitions of "excellent price" are obviously not the same. 0:)

I thought I had a bargain when I picked one up for $34 at "blowitoutahere" on Amazon marketplace. :( Well, with shipping almost the same price. You had a great bargain. So did I, back when I paid about $80 for the set. Contains several of my "go to" recordings of some of my favorite symphonies.

I paid on average $1.50 per CD for the Vaughan Williams: The Collector's Edition set at Amazon US. The ImportCD price would have been about $0.40 per CD. I have not bought from ImportCD in months, its packaging is the worse among the Amazon MP vendors. I have not received any orders from them without any busted CD jewel cases in a very long time ... :-\
The ASIN is B003DQIQ7C. That's the ASIN of Songs. The ASIN for the big box on Amazon UK and US is B004EQAUZQ.

This review is from: The Real Chopin (Audio CD)
This is a warning to those tempted by the offer of a 21 disc boxed set of The Real Chopin. This is misadvertised by Amazon; the actual item is a single disc of the complete Chopin songs, still from the Chopin Institute (NIFC) but not the 21 disc boxed set. I hope/ trust that Amazon will revise their product information (and price!) accordingly.
One star is for Amazon's info, not the quality of the disc, btw.
The story continues...
Yes. The price has been changed back to £12.99 (with VAT obviously) today. No other change is made, but no more 'mispricing'. Makes me wonder what they will eventually deliver to the hundreds of people who pre-ordered. >:D
Interesting, maybe I have another go! ;D
With Amazon proper that is. I sent a email to a marketplace seller that offered at 40 pounds, asking if the offer was correct. Could have well been, for that price. But he replied that he would check, and subsequnetely withdrew his offer... ::)

I actually prefer the older set where there are individual jewel cases with their own inserts. I only paid $30 for mine two years ago.
Anxiety is over: price back to £71.99 for that one, too, at Amazon uk. :(
I must have re-ordered that "real Chopin" box just in time yesterday! ;D And it seems that my chances of actually getting it after all, are increasing. 8)

this set could be an amazing seal.
At almost 1 Euro per CD, and presumably without a single dud (if the early works came from Philips' series), this set could be an amazing seal.It looks to me like a Dr J and Mr H type set. Some of the early works are fantastic and well recorded with Gardelli. But many (not all) of the most well known are not first choices. Some of them are on the old side too. But it may be that there are enough great works to still make this worth it (with a few to be complemented with other sets).

99 cds for £136 (excluding VAT) at mdt. That's borderline super-bargain.

But that is based on the assumption that every note Liszt wrote is worth listening to, I suppose.
I'd like to find a better offer... ::)If you buy it from Hyperion's web site it is £260, so mdt is offering a steep discount. However it is more Liszt than I will ever need to hear so I am not in the market unless there is a truly stunning discount.
I'd like to find a better offer... ::)
I just placed my last order with Presto Classical last week and that will be it for a while or until my past orders placed just a week before Christmas start to arrive. I have no clue what those incompetent at the homeland security have been doing to all the trans-Atlantic packages from the UK. Packages sent by the Royal Airmail used to take at most 10 days.Well, on top of that there has been several feet of snow on the east coast - every few days another storm. Add holidays in and you have a general mess. On the other hand, I received an order that I'd made in mid-December just this past week, so yours will probably make it to you - eventually!

Weather alone cannot explain such delay - 4 weeks and counting. How many days does it usually take for airmail to arrive from the UK?Well - I think the weather could have played a role. First there was the UK storm. If your order didn't get out ahead of this, I doubt it made it until at least after Christmas. THe following week there was a storm in the US, so the liklihood that your disc got out in December is close to nil. So then we are talking January 3 and it is likely still in the UK!!!! The eastern US was then hit by several storms over the next few weeks. SO service was still getting back to normal, when it was regularly hit by new delays. For example, the week of MLK holday, Monday was a day off and there were two storms that week. SO even if it got the US, if it was stuck in an eastern state (or southern state - they were hit really hard too at one point), it may been stalled even more. Anyway, I'm not trying to defend anyone (you want your discs gosh darnit! >:D), but just show that the weather really could have played a big role.

$14.95 for 16 discs.
Abeille Musique Just thought I would mention that they have increased some of the discounts on SOME of the discs (Supraphon and Decapo, for example). In some cases the current price is only slight more (or just about) the same price I paid without VAT. I don't know how long the sale goes, but this may be of interest.
It's still all Liszt, though. :( If somebody donated me 145 euros, I'd probably get the Bernstein Symphony Edition* or buy as many ZigZag/Harmonia Mundi CDs as possible.
*which, if you see as a super-duper bargain, you should post forthwith please :)
If someone gave me the Bernstein symphony edition I'd give it to my wife. She uses discarded CDs to scare birds away from the tomato plants. ;D
Seriously, if you buy 100 CDs of Liszt from the well known pianists you get at least 10 versions each of the same 10 CDs of music. I'm curious to know what the rest of it is like. I like to decide for myself what bits I like.
At any rate your odds of a happy ending are better than mine: the BSE seems to already be vanishing completely from online shops. The Amazons are already at marketplace-only, ArkivMusic is clearing it out, and MDT, Presto, Europa, CD Universe, and JPC don't carry it or are permanently out of stock.

It is sad but true. 99 CD's of Liszt music are a bit much for me ...
Exactly, what you need is another 99 recordings of the Brandenburg Concertos...Slightly too much for me as well, even though I don't think I have more than 5-7 recordings of any given work - and that I tend towards buying recordings of music I don't know rather than another recording of music I know well. Some of Liszt's music is very impressive, but for every impressive work I've heard, I've heard at least one superficial, virtuosic potboiler, and I fear those will dominate the further one ventures into the unknown realms documented in this set.....

What's your limit on SD(C)B? :)
That is an assumption. How else can one find out? My curiosity got the better of me.
That is an assumption. How else can one find out? My curiosity got the better of me.Well yes, of course that's one of the attractions of buying classical music. But the satisfaction of curiosity in this case comes with a hefty pricetag - and (what's more important) the sacrifice of lots of time - there's lots of music I feel is a safer bet to explore. Eg the 60 disc BIS Sibelius edition, etc etc....
Well I thought I was going to wait until August and then pick up a copy when I went back to the USA to a PhD program. Bring it along to the apartment as a self-housewarming-present. But it's so rare already that if I wait until August I might have to pay $200.
So let's say <$100.

There is another way. (http://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Liszt,_Franz)
Besides listening to it?
I can't really think of any Liszt pieces that can be described by the typical criticism of empty pianistic pyrotechnics. What are the examples of this sin?
Scarpia, sorry if that was obscure; I posted a link to the (nearly) complete scores online at IMSLP. I've found it to be a great resource for exploring unfamiliar music without blind-buying recordings. There is, I admit, always the possibility that a great performance will turn you on to a seemingly unpromising piece, I admit...

Hmm, I don't need two (!) Beethoven concerto cycles, but I am a Gilels fan, and that's 9 discs for the price of 1...!
That's odd, Cleveland/Szell on EMI. Must have been some sort of deal with Columbia.
He was all over the place. There is a Dvorak Cello Concerto with Fournier/Berlin Phil/Szell on DG.
Ok, maybe if I drop a random score of a piece by Liszt in front of you, you will be able to tell if those pages and pages of flowing arpeggios are just "pyrotechnics" or a work of genius like some of the movements in Annes de Pelerinage. And how many hours of pouring over scores will it take to verify that each disc of that set, which costs me $2, is worth my time? Isn't it more pleasant to simply listen to it?
Both are equally pleasant and take equally long.
Squinting at my monitor trying to decipher piano scores does not give me as much pleasure as listening to music, but that's me.Indeed.

Absolutely. An extremely worthwhile acquisition by any means even for multiples of that price. I own these in their individual incarnations. The Bach and Beethoven are absolutely superlative. Hahn is the queen of doublestops, and her Bach, recorded at age 16, is still a marvel of pure natural musicianship. Bach's polyphony just comes alive and hovers in the room. The Beethoven is just gorgeous, with possibly the most dance inducing finale on record. Benefits from Zinman's thoughtful accompaniment. Bernstein and Meyer lack any serious competition anyway. The Mendelssohn is a brisk, fleet, controlled sort of Sturm-und-Drang take on the familiar warhorse. The Shosty may be too controlled and analytical for some, but I think the work benefits from having the ideological and cultural baggage essentially thrown out the window. At least it's a valid alternative interpretation. The Brahms is gorgeous if not quite as magesterial as Milstein/Fistoulari, Ferras/Schuricht or Oistrakh/Klemp. The Stravinsky is wonderfully incisive and precise on Hahn's part, but Marriner/ASMIF aren't perhaps the ideal accompanists.
Marriner is a deal killer for me. But the other discs sound interesting.
I'll second Mensch--a killer deal. It's all good, effortlessly gorgeous, and the only knock on the Bach is that it's not complete (partitas #2 & 3, sonata #3).
I'm curious if I'll get hit with some mysterious import duty when it arrives.
Well, last year when I lived in Texas and ordered the complete works of Brahms, Rachmaninov, and the 100 CD set of "Russian Legends" from Abeille, I didn't get hit with any duties...
Drop down!

I bought that Russian Legends box for 30 euros and I have to say, no matter the price, it's the best CD purchase I made last year. A really astonishing trove of greatness: Richter's Beethoven and Schubert, something like 13 CDs of Gilels, Rostropovich's mesmerizing Weinberg concerto, my favorite Tchaikovsky violin concerto reading ever (Kogan), and untold riches I haven't even begun to listen to yet. It's a gold mine.
My order for the Brilliant set was cancelled as the items weren't in stock. Strange they don't handle them like Amazon, keeping orders until new stock arrives.
Purely out of curiosity, why isn't this thread in the Great Recordings subforum?Speculation: Because it's less about the intrinsic merit of individual recordings and more about reporting/discussing opportunities to buy a disc, or the offerings of a particular label, or the stock of a particular retailer, at a bargain price (?)
Abeille's running a deal on the Complete Brahms (http://www.abeillemusique.com/CD/Classique/BRIL93554/5028421935546/Brilliant-Classics/Johannes-Brahms/Integrale-de-l-oeuvre/cleart-29328.html) from Brilliant.
It has been that way for well over a year now. It really is a steal, and if you really like Brahms' music and want the whole enchilada, then this is one way to go. The set isn't perfect and has its flaws, but overall it is more than worth the price, even if you enjoyed only 10 discs!
I already have the complete a capella choral music from the same label and it's outstanding, so looking forward to the rest of the set.
The chamber music recordings are also high quality.

Ray, Did you end up paying some pretty steep shipping charge for the BC Brahms set? The price on the set is indeed very good ...
I ordered it fully a year ago. The price I got was 20 euros, came out to US $37 with shipping. That's a $10 shipping charge, but $37 for 60 CDs is still an insane deal. This one is probably more like $45ish.
OK, I bit! (First CD purchase of 2011--it'll be interesting to see if they send the advertised set!)
What was there to bite? ???

Deep Discount (US) is having a 50% off selected items sale, which is about 1000 classical discs/sets and such. There are a few weird things like insanely high starting prices for some items, and a couple mis-matches between description and item. But there are also some pretty good deals to be had, especially on EMI (though Eloquence, Apex, and others appear). They had a number of Mahler sets (Bertini ($38?), EMI Mahler set (less than $30), etc), Haitink Ring (under $50), Elgar and Vaughan Williams Collector's Edition ($31-33), Britten CE (~$60ish), the Icon series, EMI operas, Haitink Vaughn Williams Symphonies (under $25), etc. They have a lot of crap to wade through as well, so patience is a virtue. Link is: http://www.deepdiscount.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/product.browse/_/Spring-Sale-Classical-CDs/categoryID/da789b9f-bd5f-4a62-8f56-24556b5fca6a/ (http://www.deepdiscount.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/product.browse/_/Spring-Sale-Classical-CDs/categoryID/da789b9f-bd5f-4a62-8f56-24556b5fca6a/)
They have free shipping in the US over $15 (I think that was the limit). Don't know what they charge to Europe.

How does that compare to his Vienna cycle?
Marvellous stuff from Manze, the Corelli sonatas 2cds, Vivaldi's Prince of Poland concert, Mozart's 3/4/5 concerti & a various works disc featuring Rebel.
Manze - The Art of the Violin 5cd set (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Andrew-Manze-Art-Violin/dp/B002HNA94U/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1300225691&sr=1-1) £7.49p
No nonesense in delivery/dispatch, as its from Harmonia Mundi's own page on Amazon, packed and fulfilled by HM.
Great music making all round.
The price has gone up:(
My first post - many thanks for all the tips and pointers, some of which have led to very enjoyable purchases.
Click the UK link, then click Marketplace :)
Thank you Brian, I have ordered it:)
Wow, the Levine/MET Wagner Ring from the late 80's is a super price on Amazon Canada. $17.99 Doesn't include the libretto.

I can't believe it but I bought this - fantastic price!
I clicked on the yellow purchase from Amazon tag - will this return some funds to GMG? I hope so.
Given the shipping price at Europe Amazons, the sale at Presto (http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/Sony/88697808332) might be cheaper.
The two were briefly compared at another thread (http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php/topic,17920.msg494916.html#msg494916).

The link that could fetch GMG some cash is the following: http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000GYI2U0/?tag=goodmusicguideco-20 The ASIN tag, by default, works only for Amazon US, unless I'm mistaken. :)

Just ordered the Lute set to go with the Manze set I bought last week. Many thanks for the heads up, I don't know much on the Lute set, so will have much to discover. The Manze Violin set was superb. It cost me £8 last week and its halved this week. Still at £8 it was a great bargain.
Cheers
D-ohhhh !!
missed it. £23 now
Thanks for all the tips, everyone! :)

Now to the Canadian Wagner issue & Levine. What a bargain this appears to be. Its possible UK buyers may get hit with a £20 import bill but I know from experience that if the figure of the purchase is below £15 the Customs guys tend to let these through, at a £15 threshold. Hope it works out well for all dabbling. Seriously thinking about it myself!!
Cheers
Make sure to keep checking, because both are now back to £3.99 & £3.49 respectively.

Isn't Canada part of the UK, at some level?
Buying from the US, I've ordered stuff much more expensive than that from France, Germany and England and never paid a penny in import duty.

I have found out that with the UK you either get lucky or extremely unlucky with Customs Import Tax. I have a good friend in Brazil who often sends cds over to me, if he fills his declaration in at £15 or under, they get through, unopened and cleared. On the occation he makes an error and puts £20, £30 etc as the declared value of goods then they get opened, and passed to the Royal Mail lock up in Liverpool who then mail you a nice letter saying "we are holding this, that and the other for you, if you would like to collect them please pay £20 Customs fee to claim your items, if we do not hear from you within 20 days they will be returned to sender...we will deliver at your expense of an extra cost of £5.99 courier delivery". £26, because my friend put the declared value of his sendings at over £15!!I read somewhere that they may be changing this (n the UK) - and not for the better. But I cannot quite remember where I read it. Just a heads up...
I wouldn't mind but many were from his collection and as gifts....
You can get away with Customs duty if you also tick the "Gift" box too...but of course businesses such as Amazon.wherever can't declare as gift.
Since our last debacle, we keep it under £15 even if the value is more, and always tick Gift. That's to and from Brazil/England.
Or it could all be just random pickings, surely they don't pull everyone's buys?
:D
I don't know if this classifies as a super-duper cheap bargain (this explanation is for you Opus ;D), but I doubt the price of this set will be some day inferior to EUR 28:
That's a good one! ;D ;D Maybe Canada should join the EU! :)
All I know is the Queen of England picture is on their money, either some association lingers or somebody at the mint has a fetish for old ladies. :-\

Regarding the Ligeti edition - the best (and only) price from amazon.com is $83.60 from a marketplace seller. What does shipping from amazon.de to the US cost?
A lot. Just put it in your shopping cart and pretend to order and it will tell you.
I have ordered it and with shipping it comes to about £19. I expect there will be import tax and it looks like the postage and tax will exceed the cost of the set, but still be cheap.
Mike
A lot. Just put it in your shopping cart and pretend to order and it will tell you. If you have an amazon.com account you automatically have an amazon.de account. Amazon.co.uk ships to the US very reasonably, though.
Thanks - it came out to just over $49 USD shipped.
But I have to say it's dangerous now knowing I can get deals from the international amazon sites too.
From any site in Germany shipping is at least 10 Euros, but amazon.co.uk ships to the US for three pounds. It is worth the effort to check amazon.co.uk before ordering anything major from amazon.com. I got complete Richter on EMI (one of those icon boxes) for something like 6 pound plus shipping.
It is perhaps worth a mention that the symphonies (but not some of the other works) are included in the 30 disc "collector's edition" box. But Handley is by a hair my favourite RVW conductor, and the incarnation you link comes with most of his (non duplicate) RVW recordings excluding a Lark Ascending and piano concerto (both available on other EMI budget discs coupled with Delius) and I will continue to gently harass people into hearing these recordings :)
It's genial interpretation, and I suppose this disappoints some, but it's vital, and the numer of "bonuses" included is exceptionally generous.
Is this the piano concerto disk you were recommending?
A note from H&B re Naxos:I saw that too, but Arkiv are 5 for $30, so that is a better deal for most I would think and it lasts longer too (says the 18th).
"We wanted to let you know that wholesale increases will soon bump the price of Naxos CDs higher. But if you order now, you can beat the increase. Order by Noon EST on Monday April 4th and you'll just pay $6.99 for single CDs. After the 4th, our regular price for a single Naxos CD will likely rise to $9.99."
...probably will apply to other merchants as well.

Ordered both of them. With shipping, it came to exactly £10!

It's available again for EUR 32. It's very weird.
It will be slightly cheaper on Amazon which is appealing because CD Universe charges for shipping and handling are extremely high these days (when you order from abroad):7 USD for shipping to Norway (from cduniverse) for this box is not what I call excessive, and I think the box is listed at USD 105 at amazon.com. You work out what is the better deal.

I believe that was because the big sellers use bots to match or undercut the prices of other retailers, so when one screws up it creates a domino effect.
