Neat that it will be of use. Shame that the same can't be done for the recordings section atm - it's just too large.

I added them - I considered adding composer-specific things (such as the Les Troyens) thing under each composer, in fact, I'd like to (as the opera section is small), but I think that people may begin to experience browser problems if the first post becomes too long :'(

Excellent job!  :D  Thanks for your tremendous effort - I started a similar but shorter period listing HERE (http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php/topic,284.0.html) a while back w/ links to the OLD FORUM; unfortunately, no longer a choice, so a lot of interesting threads gone -  :-\

Will enjoy perusing this new list - might want to add George Enescu (http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php/topic,6059.0.html), too - thanks again!  :)

Just thinking ahead for future threads.........

The list Lethe has provided is extremely useful but one difficulty is that the general threads on the composers of specific countries often contain many posts on a particular composer. For example, although there is no thread on Vagn Holmboe there are a multitude of posts on Holmboe and his music in the thread on Scandinavian and Finnish composers(a thread which obviously covers a large number of other composers as well).

It is clearly important therefore to check these general threads as well to avoid repetition. I know that I often think as I add a post to a general composers' thread that the composer I am talking about probably deserves his own. That's why I added one on Kalevi Aho.

I got told off the other day for raising an issue which had apparently been discussed several times before on this forum.

Saying that however...it is not always possible for new or newish members to back track on topics successfully. which makes Lethe's thread so very helpful :)

I'd just like to register my objection to the proliferation of these "sticky" threads.  I don't feel there's any reason for them and am tired of seeing them constantly as I surf the board.  A reconsideration of this matter would be appreciated.  On the plus side, there isn't any sticky religion thread - not yet.

Surely, however, you agree that this one deserves a sticky, being an index?

Don, I am not all that keen on some of them myself. However, I do think this is the wrong one to complain about; as it seems like a valuable resource which will not necessarily attract new posts very often and really needs to sit at the head of the room.

As to some elsewhere; I don't understand why 'Purchases Today' or 'What are you listening to' need a sticky. They attract constant traffic. I am pretty sure that if they had the 'sticky' removed, they would remain very close to the top of the board....in other words, as far as scrolling or ignoring them is concerned, removal would make almost no difference.

The same goes for the topics in the Diner, where those that are sticky have an enormous post count.

But I think we must be close to or have reached the limit and perhaps if we are to make further topics sticky, it will mean removing the designation from another thread.

Mike

Don, I am not all that keen on some of them myself. However, I do think this is the wrong one to complain about; as it seems like a valuable resource which will not necessarily attract new posts very often and really needs to sit at the head of the room.

Mike

Yes, you're right about this one.  I was thinking about the overall effect of the many sticky threads.

I went through this section page by page, so while I might have missed them it isn't likely - I think they may have been in the recordings section (for example this one (http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php/topic,2376.0.html)), but the recordings section is twice as large as the composers one so it would be too difficult to do atm (plus if I was doing that, I'd feel compelled to index everything, and I don't think some peoples PCs would be able to handle a list that long - many internet people complain if a page exceeds even 100kb in size...).

Just because I (too) am a sad soul with absolutely no life at all :) :) I have just compiled a list of 119 composers who have not yet had a thread devoted to them but imho deserve one.

The most surprising omission I can find -now that Superhorn has started an overdue thread on Albert Roussel-is Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov!
If no-one else starts one on old Rimsky I might do myself :)

I would put Stefan Wolpe as an American, rather than German composer as he is most closely identified with the NY avant guard scene in the 50s and 60s

Moved Wolpe n__n (Welcome back, BTW)

Antill also needs a thread, given the popularity of that recent Naxos disc. The Australia section is looking lonely without him :P

BTW, if something has dropped off the forum's first page without being added, then I've missed it and could be prodded to fix that. If I disappear off the face of the earth, the mods could probably continue the list as well (I do like taking walks during rainshowers, and lightning strikes apparently do happen on occasion 0:)).

Yes, it is.

Note the following:

Quote from: Raymond EricksonFor him "Germany" was not a sovereign nation (since such did not yet exist), but rather the German-speaking Holy Roman Empire, which was to outlive Mozart by but a few years and included the duchy of Austria (of which he was not a subject, of course).

That convinces me that to call Mozart a "German" today would be anachronistic; today, Germany is a sovereign nation.  Furthermore, since the German-speaking Holy Roman Empire included the duchy of Austria, it would be further misleading to call Mozart a "German," as in our our usage that would suggest some sort of 'renunciation' of Austria.
Title: Re: Composer index
Post by: The Six on May 04, 2009, 09:02:11 AM
Is Austria now a sovereign nation? Isn't that just a matter of reinterpreting? I'd personally go with the spirit, instead of the current geographical state. That's like, if Mexico were to conquer LA two years after I die, calling me a Mexican.
I don't think it's a matter of renouncing anything since I don't think Mozart ever did that, so there should be no misunderstanding there.

Hello Epicous - I see that Sara has this composer already on the list but the link goes to your post here, i.e. just a U-tube video?

Up to you, but my suggestion would be to start a thread on this composer in the 'Composer Forum' - does not have to be long - maybe a brief bio, link to a more extensive bio, a list of his major compositions or genre of works, and possibly some recording suggestions.  Then others can read and reply w/ new posts and that link can be included in the composer listing here.  Dave  :D

Sara's last post applies here also. This isn't a list akin to one you might find in Wikipedia, say; it only contains links to threads which already exist here in GMG. (My best attempt with the forum's search engine did not reveal a thread for Grieg.) And when you find a composer thread that has not been mentioned, please post the link to it, as that would make it all the more easier to add it to the list. :)

Added, along with a backlog of recent additions. Unfortunately I am now beginning to reach the forum character limit for both posts at the beginning of the thread.

Uh oh.

A separate thread reserved for links only. (This can be used for feedback.) I'm supposing that a thread owner can lock and unlock a thread how many ever times she wants.

You can put it online...a Google doc, perhaps.

Oh I forgot I could do that. I guess I'll eventually* make a new thread and reserve the first five spots, then get this one unstickied and lock it :3

*And this means "now" or I'll never bother doing it -__-

Edit: Okies, all done - the new one is here (http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php/topic,19229.0.html) and I'll pm Gurn to sort it all out.

Oh, they wanted us to lock this thread and make it unsticky, and then to make the new version sticky. Apparently the original post had reached the maximum character limit and they were no longer able to edit it. Better now though. :)
