The Diner / Re: Last Movie You Watched
Last post by relm1 - Today at 05:28:55 AM

Yesterday, I watched Plan 9 from Outer Space (1957).  Frequently cited as the worst film ever made, I was curious about it and it was on tv so why not.  It was pretty bad but had some charm which is all I could have hoped for.  Some of the reasons why it felt bad is just horrible production values, too campy, poor acting (the co-pilot literally is reading the script on his lap), poor...well everything is poor.  Seems like everything was a single take without rehearsal.  Don't quite understand why there is a vampire or vampira.  One thing I did like is the sun gun idea.  I thought that was quite interesting in the peak of the atom and hydrogen bomb hysteria to allude to the next generation weapon would be a photon bomb but since photons travel through space everywhere, it would destroy the universe.

This is a recording of classical music from southern India, a musical style called "Carnatic) that differs from that usually associated with music from India, so-called Hindustani or music from northern India.
It is a bit more difficult for untrained ears and may be less accessible.
The distinct differences between Hindustani and Carnatic music lie in their origins, languages, styles, rhythms, and instruments. While Hindustani music emphasizes improvisation and melodic exploration within the framework of ragas, Carnatic music follows a structured approach with fixed compositions.

Possibly a 2.0, but a 3.0 quake would definitely be news in Vermont. Anything that anyone could feel, would be a very unusual event - once in a decade or less.

Currently +12ºC here as well (central Vermont) and probably getting up to 15ºC by midday, though it's cloudy and scattered showers are in the forecast (rain, not snow).

Quote from: 71 dB on Today at 01:46:09 AMFor me not liking later TD would be a limitation rather than something to be proud of. I guess I am very lucky to be able to enjoy all of their music. I just don't expect musicians to make their early albums over and over again.
It's neither pride, luck or expectations. It's a simple question of taste. Everyone differs. Sorry for being so limited.

I really want to read some Eliot as well, especially Middlemarch... but I've read so many lengthy books this year already I might save it for next. Edit: Maybe I'll try Silas Marner.

Have you read Anthony Powell's A Dance to the Music of Time? I just suddenly thought you may like it.  Short in a way, 12 short novels, funny, intelligent and arguably "great." I had a friend at university who wrote a doctorate about it, and argued it was a really major contribution to literature.

Quote from: Pohjolas Daughter on May 01, 2024, 06:45:22 PMHow is she doing?  And I'm so sorry.

I posted about it at the time, but she never got better, and rapidly declined and I had to have her euthanized on Mar. 20, 2022, the day before Mardi Gras. I had to have her predecessor, Precious euthanized on the day after Mardi Gras in 2011.

After about three months of carelessness, I got two eight-week-old kittens from a co-worker whose cat had a litter. I'm not a big picture-taker, so it looks like the latest one I have is from Sep. 2023, not long after I had them fixed. You can see where Lulu's stomach was shaved for the operation. Her brother Alban's in the foreground.

More recent non-classical music purchases on CD, all used and cheap:

Chyp-Notic: When I Dream (single, 1993)
Chyp-Notic ft. Greg Ellis: Don't Break The Heart (single, 1994)
Dido: Here With Me (single, 2001)
The Time Frequency: Real Love (single, 1992)
VA: RTL Sommer Hits 2011 (2CD compilation, 2011)
Was (Not Was): Are You Okay? (album, 1990)

I have always liked Was (Not Was)'s songs Papa Was A Rolling Stone and I Feel Better Than James Brown. This album felt interesting, but to my disappointment the other songs aren't even near as good. I love pop music of around 2011 and that's why I bought the German RTL compilation. It contains some songs I want in my music collection. The Time Frequency is nice Scottish rave music...
